On a vanilla note, I have noticed we play Bethea and Reid extra deep (probably to prevent big plays)...saw some deep coverages by McCray as well. I think they are just playing extra safe on the back end when they do bring some pressure. Reid and Bethea playing about 75% speed. I'm sure all that will be tightened up when the season starts and games count.
I noticed Reid at the LOS as well, making some very good tackles. I agree about the disguised packages...Mangini may be much more creative and he has a much more versatile group of players. As great as it is to have all pro LBs across the board, it tends to limit what you want to do...they are just too good to push them into less sure roles.

Here's the test for our new Head Coach. Will he play the players that are playing the best, or will he play the players that pull in the biggest paychecks?
Pete Carroll's team had brought in high priced Matt Flynn to be the starter, but a little short 3rd round rookie outplayed him in pre season. He had the courage to make the change before game one.
In Washington, Mike Shannahan got fired for trying to play his best QB at seeing the field over RGIII, and now reports are that Jay Gruden is going to start Cousins in week one, even though RGIII should be back.
Who can honestly say that Kaepernick has out played Gabbert through three games this preseason. Kaepernick had zero net yards Saturday. We can't win like this. He's under pressure, and he has no answers. He was rattled in this game, and his eyes and footwork showed it. Everybody on the Broncos saw it, and saw no reason to let up. Everybody in the league sees it now, and they have for a while, and it won't let up. OK, let's say we do have an OL protection problem. The best answer at QB is to make the defense pay for an aggressive rush by burning them. To do that, you must get the ball out on time, in rhythm, quickly, and therefore, usually short. Who's better at short, accurate, rhythm, timing patterns with touch, Kaepernick or Gabbert? I don't think Anybody can honestly answer Kaepernick.
I'll go further and say that Gabbert is also better at finding the open man, being decisive, and looking off the defense.
Gabbert's going to get his shot, either now or after Kaepernick can't take the pounding any more. Tomsula's a football guy. He knows when he sees a QB rattled and without answers, because he's made a career out of causing it. Now we are going to see if he has the courage to sit the guy making nine digits, or wuss out and wait until the season is lost when he's got nothing left to lose. What's it going to be, Jim? Play it safe, or stick your neck out and do what you know you need to do. You know you don't win football games by playing it safe. Are you going to be Belichick, or Singletary?

I like Gabby but he hasn't didn't go against the 1st team defense.

Step back and think for a minute my friend. Go watch every preseason game again. Really watch them. Ok, have you done that? Now, with the first team offense out there, don't change anything except the QB. Just take Kap out and put Gabbert in. What would Gabbert have done better on each and every one of those plays?

He would have taken the sack better. Go fetal mode instead of trying to make a play.

He doesn't have to do better on each and every one of those plays. He doesn't even have to do better on one play. If he would have done exactly the same, the risk to reward is better. We risk less injury wise for the same output.

I'm not sure what you're trying to say here. The team shouldn't have played Kap in the preseason?

I'm saying that if the OL is as bad as people are claiming, it doesn't matter who's behind center. And if they're really that bad, doesn't it make more sense to put in a guy who it doesn't really matter if we lose to injury, rather than your franchise QB? I'm saying if the OL is the reason we're going to lose this season, we might as well put in Gabbert, because if we're going to lose anyways, might as well give the kid a shot.

Hasn't the coaching staff done that with the first two preseason games?
And, if you are referring to the regular season, what exactly would be the point of having your franchise QB sitting on the bench just because you think the line is bad? If he is a franchise QB, he is playing until he gets injured.

Why? You want to put him out there just to get hurt? What's the point? If we're going to lose, at least see what your other QB can do behind the OL that's causing you to lose. Maybe he can do something different behind them that gets us an extra win.

Because I have three years of film on each QB, and I know clearly which one is better...and it's not Gabbert.
