The hate against Jed and Baalke is so strong from all angles, media and fans, that I am starting to question whether the obvious answer is the wrong answer. Those of us who actually watch the games know how badly the offense regressed, not that it was ever all that good except for stretches during 2012. Harbs had two years to fix the problem and did nothing, instead choosing to ride the coattails of Fangio's D until that too fell apart because of injuries.
I don't know anymore, but I am pretty sure this team was never going to see the top of the mountain with Harb's philosophy on offense. The new hire may be a disaster if our FO is really looking for a yes man like the national media claims, but if championships are the ultimate goal, then I don't think we made a mistake. Like Harbs said, if you aren't getting better you are getting worse. Something had to change. Since Harbs refused to change, he gave us no choice. Should be simple as that. Instead we have all this drama about a power struggle behind the scenes according to anonymous sources.
I agree, and especially the bolded part. The D was Top 5 this year with all the injuries, suspensions, etc., and the O regressed with better talent than previous years (yes, it had a few key injuries on the OL but so do other teams - this OL still has Top 10 talent & depth). Add on the terrible clock management/burning TOs the last four years all the way down to late in yesterday's game, the poor "situational football" displayed at key moments in huge games (end of the Super Bowl, end of last year's NFC Championship Game, etc.), seeing all the penalties this year...it goes on and on, unfortunately, and leads to what you mentioned here - something had to change and I don't think the Niners made a mistake.
