Are you disagreeing that Shanahan had full control over personnel with the Redskins???

He traded draft picks for Donovan McNabb. He staked his reputation on Rex Grossman and John Beck getting results—on television.

These are not the actions of a man to whom you would hand over complete control of player personnel.

But yet he remains both—tasked with rebuilding the franchise and having complete control over player personnel. Washington is his Pequod, and he forces it further out to sea in the hope of catching the elusive creature that has injured him and in doing so bringing glory to him upon his return.

He ran that team as he saw fit, no trades were made or players acquired without his full approval.

Does that mean Tomsula, Fangio, Gase, etc all other coordinators are out of the picture??

Jason Cole is the same guy who started the Mike Shanahan/Joe/Steve rumor so he's pushing the same angle again. I think he has local ties, but I can't recall exactly. Not sure how trustworthy a source he is.

This time of year, they are pretty much all garbage. How many times have we seen incorrect reports issued to support incorrect reports? Harbaugh to Miami and Harbaugh to Oakland (twice) are good examples. The media knows fans are desparate right now, so they just keep churning out crap for clicks.

There are definitely some trustworthy sources out there, but mostly after the fact. Don't know if anyone can be bothered to go back to 2011 and see who was on top of the Harbs news first.

I do seem to recall that Cole is a fairly good source though as far as 49ers go.

Anyone can right for Bleacher report. A two legged donkey is more reliable. Harbaughs praise of a players is more reliable.

this was true for the longest time, but they've hired solid writers over the years, you just have to check the byline and see who the writer/reporter is
Adam Gase said his "preparation was done a long time ago" regarding this week's coaching interviews with the 49ers, Atlanta Falcons and Chicago Bears.

Gase, the Denver Broncos offensive coordinator, is expected to meet with 49ers general manager Trent Baalke on Friday about replacing Jim Harbaugh. Gase's success with the Broncos and Peyton Manning has made him one of the league's most-sought candidates for head-coach openings.

"Three interviews, it's a lot of work," Gase told Denver-area reporters Wednesday. "You've got a couple days to get it done and make sure you know what you're doing. The preparation was done a long time ago."

Gase said such advance work was done in spring and summer, and then "put on the back burner" as the Broncos prepared to defend their AFC Championship.

Gase drew interest a year ago from the Cleveland Browns. Before joining the Broncos, he served as a 49ers offensive assistant in 2008 on Mike Nolan's staff that included offensive coordinator Mike Martz and quarterbacks coach Ted Tollner.

"It's a great opportunity to be able to do this," Gase said. "For these guys to reach out to talk to me, I'm excited about it, but I'm also excited for the fact we have another chance to make a run."

Manning endorsed his candidacy, telling reporters: "Last year I talked to a couple teams on the behalf of him that reached out to me. That may happen again, so I'm certainly glad to share my thoughts. … He deserves it, I think teams that he talks to will be impressed."

Gase hasn't taken the Broncos' success for granted, not after winning just 15 games in three seasons as a Detroit Lions assistant (2005-07) and going 7-9 with the 49ers in 2008.

Since parting with Harbaugh on Sunday, the 49ers have since talked with their defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn and, to an unknown extent, former NFL coach Mike Shanahan.

New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels is expected to interview this week while the Patriots enjoy a bye for the AFC playoffs' wild-card round. The 49ers have requested permission to speak next week with Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator Todd Bowles.

Former New York Jets coach Rex Ryan also reportedly will interview next week with the 49ers and Falcons.

If we get Gase, AND keep Fangio…
Rex thread got locked...

but I'll just say Rex wouldn't get out coached as much as Jim got out coached on our team.

not saying I want him as our coach or that he is in my top 5 choices...

but it wouldn't be the end of the world if he were hired.....

that being said....I'd rather Fangio, if we were going to get a DC as a coach.
I think it's a wise approach to interview a wide variety of coaches to replace Harbaugh. It's especially important in the initial phase of the search...the list will be whittled down after round 1 and those contenders will be the serious candidates. That said, I don't see either Holmgren or Mike Shanahan being on any list...largely because both would want the kind of player control Baalke's not willing to give up. I think one of the reasons Baalke wants to interview Rex Ryan is to gauge his willingness to potentially be the DC if TB decides to hire Fangio as head coach, or even if he doesn't as a back-pocket candidate to be DC if Fangio goes elsewhere.

Im torn on Gase, I think he can be very good but theres no telling if he can handle an entire locker room or how he would react when s**t goes wrong. To me the mark of a good coach is one that can keep it together when things go wrong, when you go on a two or three game losing streak and dont lose your mind, keeping your team together and focused.

I wish I could be a fly on the wall during that interview.

Your point is moot because if he were to become the next head coach of the Niners, he would not have that type of power over personnel. His job would be simply to coach up the offense and Baalke would still have control over the 53.

Maybe Baalke will bring him back as head of player personnel.

Wow. That is a surprise. What's the story there. Would love to have him back as a voice of reason

Too late now.

Anyone that prepares for the HC interviews 9 months in advance is OK by me.

Why? We don't have a Vice President of Player Personnel
