Doesn't matter now tho. It's irrelevant. You can't keep 2 starting quality backups on any team these days.
Harbaugh needs to tap into what makes our players special and exploit it otherwise the season is lost.

I for one was VERY happy when his ship sailed. Now he's KCs problem, and we're already seeing the same excuses we used in SF (receivers suck, bad oline, playcalling) being used there. Good riddance. I expect Andy Reid to be out of a job within the next 3 yrs if Alex remains starter.

Winning QB tho...

When Kap looks worse than Cody Pickett when playing Seattle, anything looks like a better option.

Alex being a back-up just happened to coincide with a strong armed fleet footed new QB getting unleashed on the NFL running an offense suited to him. The success of the offense was 100% based on defensive coordinators dealing with something they hadn't seen before in Kaepernick, running a gimmick offense that played to his strengths. It took about what 10-12 games for the NFL defensive coordinators to figure him out? That is what happened, Harbaugh and Roman didn't decide to stop playing to Kaepernick's strengths, defenses did what they could to take away what Kap does well and force him to beat them with his weaknesses. How many QBs have great success in their first handful of starts then fade into mediocrity or back to riding the pine or worst yet out of football? Look at the recent young guns. Where is the Cam Newton that started his NFL career with back to back 400 yard games and threw for over 4,000 yards as a rookie? How is RG3 the 2012 Pro Bowler and offensive rookie of the year doing? Defensive coordinators is what happened to them, any part of their game or the play calling was altered out of necessity. Don't understand why people can't realize that is what is happening with Kaepernick.

The only read option i'll consider is the option to NOT read this thread again.

I can see most of you didn't read the thread, just the title.
I believe KAP does need a veteran mentor back there. He looked so much more prepared and comfortable when Alex was backing him up...mentoring. Teams across the league have kept veteran QBs as backups for this reason. Help teach your young QB what they are seeing, how to prepare, etc. I wish we would have signed a veteran backup instead of Gabbert, and the others who came through.

If you ask me, the difference was that we were more aggressive with our use of the read option and the pistol. Ever since the Alex Smith trade, we've seemed to completely scrap both for fear of getting Kap hurt due to the lack of a quality backup.
You have somewhat of a good point here.. though I have to figure defenses would have learned to successfully counter and shut down our RO anyway over time. Another strong concern is this.. once you pay a QB top dolllars.. how often do you really want said QB taking the extra hits he will take in the RO?
Then, someone alluded to what a good mentor Alex was for Kaep. I'm sure that was an extra bonus that has been missed in assisting Kaep.
The real issue is, why isn't Kaep responding well to becoming a legit pocket passer? The physical talent is there. The work ethic was repeatedly lauded. The team talent is stronger than it has been in a decade.
So what's the big problem?
... and THAT is where feathers get ruffled.. so I leave the finger-pointing alone from here on.

For those of you who actually read the thread, thank you.
For those of you who didn't, the post was not about Alex Smith. Look at the TL;DR. The point is that we have become very vanilla partially due to a fear of Kap getting hurt.
For those who claim the read option and pistol would've been figured out, how come the Eagles are having so much success?
For those who cited other QB examples, Cam Newton looked pretty damn good last year. RG3, on the other hand, probably has a lot to do with why we've gotten away from the zone read running game.
The Ravens didn't show how to shut down that portion of our offense, but they did put some fear into our staff with how they defended it. If you remember, Suggs and co. were teeing off on Kap every time. With Gabbert backing Kap up, we've become a little less brazen about having him run around.

If Smith was helping that much, does that say anything about the QB coach? Isn't he the guy who helps show the QB his errors during bench time? Who hands P Manning photos of the last series? Not that SF has to do exactly the same thing...but if they keep falling they should definitely try some things. It's too late to get a veteran QB and I'm not sure it would work as well as it did with Smith, who had studied and mastered the offense two years earlier.

i do not know,, if we bring in some vet mentor ( i actually thought we should have given garcia a tryout) all that would do is stir things up about should ck be benched. damned if we do on that one but point well taken,, we do need someone we can trust back there is they have to come in and play
