First off, I would like to say that I'm grateful this thanksgiving week for the opportunity to live in a country with immense freedoms and luxuries that most of the world does not enjoy. We have are privileged and fortunate to even have the means and opportunity to watch the great game of football, talk about it with people from all over the world and cheer our team on. Let us not forget that this coming Thursday - no matter the outcome.

Back to football: I'm going to try and stay more positive this week in all aspects being that it's Thanksgiving week. In the end, there were a lot of positives to take away from the game - just gotta look at it from a positive perspective.

First off, we won the game. Never forget how tough it is to get a win in the NFL - no matter who you're playing. Every team is full of the top talent out of College and these guys are professionals - they do this all day, every day. Just ask the Chiefs how hard it is to get a win.(In case you missed it, the Chiefs lost to the 0-10 Raiders last week). Nothing is guaranteed and any team can win or lose on any given Sunday. I've been a fan of the team since I was 5 years old rooting on Joe in the super bowl and I've seen this team have immense success and immense failure. Let us never take for granted a winning football team and a team that will still be playing meaningful games late into the season. I remember seasons where the games didn't matter anymore by this point. When you were already depressed because your best hope was "next year is our year" and that's 10 months away....

Overall, we lost a lot of aspects of this game and still won the game.

We lost the special teams battle. We ended up with 5 drives starting inside our own 10 yard line. There were numerous issues that lead to this. We had 1 punt that was let go that should've been fielded. We had one punt have a weird spin on it that our returner couldn't judge. We had 2 penalties on punt returns that backed us up and we had an ill advised kickoff return mixed with a penalty that set us up at the 7 yard line. Statistics will tell you that if you start a drive inside your own 20 yard line, your chances of scoring drop drastically. If you start within your own 10 yard line - it's even worse. The league average from 2001-2010 scoring % from drives inside the 10 was between 15-17%(that's total scoring - FG or TD. The chances of a TD were about 10% and FG about 6) I say between because the only numbers I could find was a graph, so it was hard to tell exactly what number it would be. Our own coverage teams did a decent job, but, you can't start that many drives inside your own 10 yard line and expect to be successful. You could give the best offenses in our league today the ball 5 times inside their own 10 yard line and they'll struggle to score points.

So, to be positive about it: We still scored 17 points while starting inside our own 10 yard line 5 times(see, doesn't that sound better )

We lost in the run game on both sides of the ball. We have been a team that, over the past 3 years, has won games by running the ball and stopping the run. We did neither well in this game. We averaged a bad-at-best 2.3 yards per carry and gave up 5 yards a carry to the opposing team. We got beat in the trenches on both sides for the run game. Just by looking at that stat - we should've lost this game. We usually have the script flipped. If we were to average 5 yards a run and give up only 2.3 per run - you'd be certain we won the game.

So, to be positive about it: We still won the game that went opposite of our winning formula.

We lost the turnover battle. Not much to say, but, we had 3 turnovers, they had 1. Just like our run defense, over the past 3 years, we've won games by having a positive turnover differential. We did not.

So, to be positive about it: We still won the game with a -2 turnover differential.

We'll dive into why we lost those individual battles throughout the thread, but I wanted to take a minute and remind us all to try and stay positive and look for the best - just like the players need to. If they only focus on the things that they're not doing well and on the negative, that negativity will color everything. The fact is, we're a 7-4 team in the thick of a playoff hunt with a great defense, superbly athletically gifted QB, a future HOF RB and a HC who's never missed an NFCCG. Things aren't always doom and gloom. Are there things that our team can do better? Absolutely. But, instead of boo our players to be better, let's build them up for success.

A couple things for everyone to keep in mind with my upcoming posts:

I'll be highlighting some things that CK can do better or things that he missed - that does not mean that he sucks or that I don't think he can lead us to a SB. That means, I'll be showing some things he can do better. Will some of those be things that he's needed to improve on for a while? Yes. But, again, that does not mean he sucks or that he's being poorly coached. It's hard to work on these things in leaps and bounds during the season.

As usual, breakdowns to follow and Happy Thanksgiving!
ok bro. same to you

Some posters won't even process this, and immediately go to suckage
Your guys breakdowns are greatly appreciated for people like me, where the game doesn't slow down while its being played!!
I helped coach for 7 years and one of the coaches could tell everything that happened on offense and defense while the play was happening. He could point out specific players and what they were doing.

I would go to the "film" and look at what he said to confirm it. It was amazing. He did play QB at high levels and was offered a contract with the Houston Oilers Many years ago, but actually almost lost his ankle in an accident one week before he was heading to Houston. It always just amazed me.

Sorry this ran long but just wanted to express my appreciation. And, GO NINERS!!!

Washington shows a 2 deep safety look. We're in 22 Personnel. By Washington's alignment, you'd think they're in man-coverage. But, they're actually going to be in zone. They were trying to cover all the run gaps in their alignment.

What Kap does a good job of on this play is seeing the zone coverage. From what's I've seen of Washington's defense, they play their zones where, if a guy's in the slot, he'll go with the vertical threat through his zone. Some, will play it where the zone defender stays in the underneath zone and some play it where the defender goes with the guy through his zone. So, this will open up Boldin on the slant.

You see how all the defenders are in zone(except the slot on Vernon) and Vernon is double teamed while Boldin comes on the underneath slant.

Kap hits Boldin for an 18 yard gain.
I rarely post on this forum but im always on here reading and this is by far the thread I look forward to reading most. I learned more about football reading these threads than I did watching football my whole life so thank you for that. I think for me the most frustrating thing watching these games lately has been the drops and lack of overall effort by our receivers (mainly crabtree and vernon). They rarely create separation and when they do have potential for a big gain they cant make the easy grab. That being said I am happy we got the win just hope we can improve enough in a short period to beat seattle this week. Happy thanksgiving :)

My only issue - I know I'm nitpicking, is that I don't think a 3 yard gain on first down is bad or negative. To me, a negative or no gain on 1st down has to be <or=2. 2nd and 7 or 3rd and 4 still leave you a good chance of converting. If you count 2nd and 7(since you look at >7) as positive, 12 of 21 times were negative and 9 of 12 positive on 1st down. It's closer to 50% then.
Happy thxgiving y'all !

Of the 21 2nd downs we had this game, here is the breakdown:
15 of the 21 times we had >7 yards to go averaging 10.13 yards to go

Overall:
On 2nd downs, 65.5% of the time (144 of 220) we had >7 yards to go averaging 10.5 yards to go. In short, 2/3rds of the time we're going BACKWARDS on 1st downs and putting ourselves in 2nd and longs, which as you know, often times snowballs from there.

Can you please send a letter to Roman with this info, I swear he must not know this stuff.

Totally a matter of preference. But the stats guys consider 4+ yards a 1st down success so I stay with that. But I'll keep posting like this so you all can come up with your own operational definition of success. What I found is that we and the Lions are, respectively, #31 and #32 worst in the NFL on 1st down production. But doesn't this make sense when you consider our offensive mentality of "chunk play"-abilities off PA?

Sticking with your positive theme, I was very happy with the two plays where we ended in 2nd and 1, back-to-back b/c it appeared that we had a short primary read, passed around the 2 second mark IIRC and b/c of Crabtree & Boldin's ability to get YAC, a simple 3 yard pass turned into a 9 yard gain or just stopped there (for 9). So I was very thankful for that!

I already called it into Harbaugh...he vetoed it though; talking to Roman and the rest of the coaches for ideas...ooops, delay of game. Sorry!

Agreed. My biggest concern this week is: how will we function with those throws mostly taken away? Seattle, by coverage, tries to take away all your short, timing throws over the middle. They defend your short throws with the coverage and your deep throws with the rush. So, the only throws they give you are in the 7-8 yard range by the sideline - the longest short throw on the field.

Nice opening thought about how much we have to be thankful for. It's funny that we have to give a disclaimer before pointing out things the team needs to work on to get better. That said, I wanted to echo the same disclaimer.

DISCLAIMER: I am a Kap fan. Just because I critique his game, it does not mean I am a hater. From a coaches point of view, it is good to strive for perfection while hoping for excellence. The assessments may be harsh, but as we watch Kap develop, these cut ups provide a way for us to monitor his progress. As the years go by, we can see him get better in certain areas and look back and point to where he has grown.

WAS came with a healthy mix of man and zone coverage. A bit more man coverage than I expected considering how other teams have defended the 49ers by playing majority zone. Often, WAS would load the box with 8 and play man coverage. This is a compliment to the run game and a disrespect to the passing game. Some of that could be on Kap, but I think a lot of it is on the WR corp's lack of a deep threat. WAS didn't feel the need to fear being beat deep. This is why the 49ers took some deep shots even with no deep threats. That was what WAS dared the 49ers to do, beat them deep. It worked on the first drive and that caused the 49ers to try a few more times throughout the game.

When the WRs were covered downfield - no surprise there - there were indeed options underneath to throw to. Kap instead, scrambled for minimal gains. If the deep option is not there, Kap needs to be fast with adjusting his eye level to the short routes. Whether this is on the coaching to drill it into his head or on Kap to do it because that would be the logical thing to do, it needs to be done. There was one play on the final drive of the 1st half where there were 4 routes going out, both deep routes were double covered and Kap waited for it to become open. All the while the two underneath routes were open. I'll show a few plays regarding this.

I thought Marcus Martin didn't have a good game run blocking. He failed to recognize his block and that led to a few bad runs. Aldon's presence was felt up and down the Dline. The RayMac sack was a direct result of Aldon as Fangio moved Aldon around the Dline. Alfred Morris' big day was mainly a result of some missed assignments and shoddy tackling. This needs to get fixed for Thursday's game. I consider Morris like a mini-Lynch, big RB with good quickness, tough to bring down. RG3 is terrible and if you want to see a QB that doesn't know wth he's looking at when he drops back, RG3 is that guy. I'm sure a lot has to do with the 49er pas rush, but he is going down Micael Vick's career path if he doesn't shape up - good athlete, poor football IQ.
