Not a bad signing, should of kept Glenn Winston over James in the 1st place, but oh well. Smith looked ok in pre-season.
I will say this about Ellington though, even if he was 100% I thought Carlos Hyde looked much better than him on KR. Ever since Ted Ginn left, we are yet to find an answer for KR/PR. We haven't had a KR TD since 2011 now and is long overdue that's for sure.
Ellington is fine at KR. He gets to the same field position that Hyde did. Hyde just looks more impressive because he's big and he knocks people down when he gets tackled. It's an unnecessary risk to a key player to have him out there, though. Whoever is doing the job needs much better blocking. I'm tired of seeing ST guys watching the KR get tackled (paging Craig Dahl).
Ellington appears to struggle reading the field on punt returns, and I feel he will improve in time. LMJ didn't get many yards when he started as PR, iirc.
Anyway, I know Smith did some KR in preseason, but I don't remember him returning punts. I'm hoping Ellington isn't on his way to the IR.
