Week 9: @ New Orleans

Overview: Win 27-24 (OT)
A great win. After watching the game again, Kap really had a great game. We had several back-breaking drops. At least half of our 'Points Squandered' were due to dropped passes. Our defense played lights out! Borland and Bethea were awesome! Our defense really is good. Our offense needs to straighten things out.

It was good to see us dedicated to the run. I was disappointed that we went back to Gore in OT after Hyde picked up good yardage on back-to-back-to-back run plays. That ended up stalling our drive in OT.

Big picture, with this win, we're essentially where I thought we'd be at this point (switching the Rams and Saints games). We have a shot at the playoffs, the most friendly schedule of our division foes going forward, and serious reinforcements coming! We need to get the drops under control though!!!!

Penalties:
Anquan Boldin:
1. Offensive Pass Interference, 10 yard Penalty
- Comment: PI call negates a 25 yard pickup on a beautifully-thrown ball. The PI call itself was pretty ticky-tack. We end up having to punt because of it, but Boldin could have saved the series but had a drop (see 3rd down conversion).

Aaron Lynch:
1. Neutral Zone Infraction, 5 yard Penalty
- Comment: This penalty really could have gone either way, and it did give NO a first down, but they had to punt anyway, so it was inconsequential.

Total: 2

Turnovers:
1. Colin Kaepernick (FUM)
- Comment: with a 1:10 to go and one TO before half, we're thinking at least 3 pts, but Kaepernick was strip-sacked from behind. It seemed as though he didn't think the defender was going to catch him. Thankfully, Culliver saves the day right before half by picking Brees, or this turnover would have been really bad.

Total: 1

Sacks (Attributed):
1. Colin Kaepernick
- Comment: The strip-sack, he was pressured early from both the DT and RDE positions, but he had time to throw it out of bounds. Again, it looked as though he thought he could outrun the defense. Thankfully the turnover wasn't a back-breaker.

2. Colin Kaepernick
- Comment: Kap had a long time to survey the field. Apparently there was no one open, so it would have been the good play to throw it away. Instead it was a 10 yard loss and a 3 and out.

3. Carlos Hyde
- Comment: The Saints were showing blitz and Hyde missed his assignment. Kap had no time whatsoever. You'd like Kap to diagnose the blitz pre-snap as it was pretty obvious they were bringing pressure.

4. Carlos Hyde / Vernon Davis
- Comment: Saints send an overload blitz and Kap can't get rid of it quickly. This kills the drive and could have killed our season, had it not been for Ahmad's strip-sack.

Missed 3rd Down Opportunities:
1. 3rd and 17:
- Comment: Boldin's PI put us behind the 8-ball, and a short run and a drop by Boldin that would have been a first down put us in 3rd and long. Kap tries the keeper to the left, but the Saints play it well and Kap gets maybe 2 yards.

2. 3rd and 9:
- Comment: With heavy pressure, Kap threw it to the sticks, but Crabs ran the route an extra yard or two, and it resulted in an incomplete pass. Considering the down and distance, I would have to put the blame more on Crabs, as the pass was exactly where it would need to be to pick up the first down. This killed the drive and took at least 3 pts off the board before half.

3. 3rd and 3:
- Comment: Although this was a drop by Boldin, I don't think we would have gotten the first as Kap's pass didn't lead Boldin to the sticks. The blame goes to Kap here. And we were approaching FG territory again, so it cost us at least 3pts.

4. 3rd and 15:
- Comment: The Kap sack put us in a bad down and distance situation, but a laser by Kap to Boldin would have been 6 if Boldin catches it... blown opportunity there.

5. 3rd and 5:
- Comment: Another drop by Boldin, this one goes on Boldin's shoulders too. It was right at the sticks and it would have continued the drive.

6. 3rd and 4:
- Comment: Hyde missed the blitz pickup. Kap didn't properly read the blitz pre-snap... end of story, but it killed another potential FG try.

7. 3rd and 10:
- Comment: Crabtree dropped a perfect pass, but then we pick up the 4th down, so it was inconsequential.

8. 3rd and 10:
- Comment: Just before attempting the FG, Kap tries to connect with Boldin along the sidelines and it was good coverage by the defender. This pass was thrown only so that Boldin had a chance, so pretty inconsequential.

9. 3rd and 10:
- Comment: The series started with a no-gainer on first down by Gore, then Kap was pressured and didn't have time to connect with Crabtree on 2nd down. Kap has to diagnose the blitz as it was obvious they were sending everyone. A screen there would have been deadly. But we end up getting the win with the strip sack, so it was inconsequential.

Burned TO:
1. Coach Harbaugh:
- Comment: 3rd play of the game, we had 12 men on the field for a 3rd and long, good TO, but bad form by our secondary to force him to use it. The TO didn't matter though.

2. Colin Kaepernick:
- Comment: 2nd and 12, Kap doesn't like the defensive formation and calls a TO. Interestingly, there was time left on the clock, so this wasn't a clock management issue. They follow it up with a strike to Boldin for a first, so it was well worth the TO. (Great throw BTW)

Points Squandered:

25 (same as the Rams game ), but considering the full season, less than 33 usually means a win and greater than that is a loss (Rams game notwithstanding).

I will say this. Kaepernick needs to stop holding on to the ball ALL the time thinking he can extend the play. Yes, I don't want him to be a p***y like Wilson where he looks to run and when he can't throws the ball into the stands...but with that said, Kaep needs to go through his progressions, find a running lane, and if both are not available just throw it away.

I would have to guess that the majority of sack plays on Kaep have been drive killing. Not only does he get sacked, but all that shifting he does gets us HUGE losses that are hard to recover from.

Sacks, in general, are drive killers.

The two key factors that I want to see improvement in are: diagnosing blitzes, pre-snap and being able to hit the quick hitters when he does diagnose those plays, and learn to throw it away instead of running away. The second one is hard because it's such a weapon for us, but he's been getting caught from behind on a pretty regular basis this year, and it's killing us.

A new post titled "Shootin' Ourselves in the Foot" after a win. Of course, we are the whiners.

It's been a season-long thread after each game, accounting for all penalties, turnovers, sacks, etc... The idea is to monitor our mishaps as a way to measure success...

... hence the 'Points Squandered'...

Maybe you've missed the previous 9 threads with similar titles (4 or which were after wins).

I think you made a spreadsheet that said if there wasn't any drops, Kap would have had like a 68% completion percentage...
anyone know how many more passing yds Kap would've gotten had it not been for all those drops? particularly that huge post route that Boldin dropped.

There were 7 drops.

If all of those drops had been caught his comp % would have been 65.63%, but they were not caught, and I do not think it is realistic to think that there will no drops in a game.

Dropped passes, pressures, and penalties that take away passing yards, completions, and scores are three factors that can lower, significantly lower a quarterback' s statistical line.

These factors have an impact and they, those factors, are often, but not always, beyond the control of a quarterback.
