It's obvious that you guys watch little or no soccer, if you did you'd vbe less surprised how balls have strange pojectories. Type Roberto Carlos free kicks into youtube and watch.

It was the hand of Perry Brooks that saved it.

The announcers said, "Man he hooked that in there". HOOK? that was a shank all the way. But dawson kicked it so damn hard the ball looked like a weird sausage went thru and then took a dead right turn. Shank all the way that was powered thru with sheer force. Wow!
And yes, it also knuckled.

a shank implies he hit it nowhere near the goalposts. so he didn't "shank" it.
he hooked, sliced, curved it or whatever else you wanna call it

These terms are taken directly from Golf, and in Golf, a shank is when the ball curves toward the clubs toe, and a hook is when it curves towards the clubs handle.
Assuming the foot/leg is the club, it was definitely a shank, as it curved towards the toe (holder)

This is football, not golf.
In football, shank refers to when a punter or kicker misses tremendously. You can't miss tremendously and make a FG.

Reminded me of a kick that Nedney missed in Chicago (think it was 2005). The kick looked good initially... then the wind caught it and it ended up landing near one of the pylons.
