Boldin's route is designed to take the curl/flat defender to the flats. Crabs will work the area vacated.
STL comes with a fire zone blitz (rush 5, 3 underneath zone defenders, 3 deep zone defenders) and overload the left side of the Oline.
Kap takes the snap and looks to his right. Since it's 3rd and 10, I think he's looking to Crabs' In route. 5 man rush versus 6 man protection. #55 will blitz the C gap between Staley and Gore and come unblocked. MMartin on a knee (not sure if he tripped on Iupati).
Same moment in time as pic above. Crabs is about to break in as Boldin draws the attention of the curl/flat defender (blue).
This is the moment Kap just took his eyes away from looking downfield to look at the oncoming rush. Is there an anticipation throw to be made here to Crabs?
Notice how STL shows cover2 but rotates to a cover3 shell.
To be hypercritical, I think Crabs can be targeted using anticipation, but Kap is going to get smacked if he throws it. Punt.
Does this look like we got away with and illegal formation to you? Kinda looks like Crabs is covering up Boldin. We really need to watch out for this s**t, we got popped for one late in the game but this looks really close. Either Crabs or Boldin need to take a step back IMO. We where also really push the line on OL in the backfield.

Kap Sacked #3
STL: cover1 man. Notice how the CB on SJ is playing with an inside shade. He is basically giving up the deep sideline route (outside release), but not giving up a quick slant.
4 man rush. #55 fakes a blitz and that will throw off ADavis.
Kap gets the snap and looks to his right to SJ. ADavis thought #55 was coming on a blitz due to #55's fake blitz during presnap. Actually, #55 has man coverage assignment on Gore. The thought of #55 coming causes hesitation from ADavis and the DE (#95) comes unblocked.
Notice how much the CB on SJ is cheating to the inside. STL is not giving up a slant to SJ. Kap sees this and red lights SJ's slant.
Same moment in time as pic above. Iimmediate pressure as that DE comes unblocked off the edge.
Just wanted to again mention how much the CB wants to defeat the slant route. This is division foes knowing one another. Nothing Kap can do as unblocked pressure doesn't allow a second read.
The loss of -5 brings up 3rd & 12 which the 49ers would convert (Crabs +12) to get a new set of downs.

I see it. Blah. "Illegal formation offense. Penalty declined. 4th down."

Oh was this the play? I knew we got popped for it on one of our sacks. That sort of stuff drives me nuts, especailly on basic trip gun forms. I mean there is like three types of trip forms - Trips, Trio and Trey, that should be a very easy thing to get accomplished.

Kap Sacked #4
STL: cover 0
7 man blitz versus 7 man protection.
Kap takes the snap and looks to his left. Iupati gives up some pressure, but it's #55 that will come unblocked.
Same time as pic above. I think there may be an anticipation throw to be made to Crabs. The defender over Crabs is leaning the wrong way. However, I think Kap is looking to Boldin who is double covered.
Punt.

Oh no, it wasn't. I was just implying that it didn't matter anyway since it was a sack and the 49ers were going to punt. You are right, Crabs is covering up Boldin.

Sack 4 looks like a flipped version on the other #55 sack. Its a real shame, because that's probably a TD to crabs. Damn, this is a frustrating ass game

Kap sacked #5
STL: 5 man rush. I think it's cover1 man. STL is caught lined up incorrectly as one CB is asked to cover SJ and Lloyd.
Kap first looks to SJ, but doesn't pull the trigger. Lloyd is about to be very open as he falls for the pump fake to SJ.
Same moment as pic above. Boone has engaged his man.
Boone is shoved back into Kap. Perhaps a hands to the face is missed here on Boone. Kap fends off Boone with one hand as Quinn gets around the edge on Staley.
Same time as pic above. Lloyd is open, but Kap needs to escape the pressure coming into his face.
What a waste. Had Staley won this battle, Kap finds Lloyd since he was about to roll to the right. Instead, lost fumble that leads to STL's TD.
Before this play, there had been 4 sacks in the first half. Empty backfield should no longer be called as it tips off 'pass' and allows the STL DLine to tee off on the pass rush as Quinn goes speed rush all the way. When the run game needs to be established, 2nd & 1 is a good time to call a run.

Kap Sacked #6
This is the last offensive play before the half.
49ers: Variation of all-curls (Crabs + Boldin) is designed to get Dawson a better shot at the FG.
STL: cover3
Kap drops back and looks to his right to Lloyd on the backside. The blue defender is Kap's key. Since he is not playing tight on Hyde, he is a threat to play the passing lane to Lloyd. Kap starts his windup, but wisely decides not to pull the trigger to Lloyd. The next read for Kap should then be to Hyde.
Kap having been sacked 5 times already, Kap gets spooked and feels the need to escape.
It may be a tight pocket, but it's a secure pocket as the OIine holds up in pass protection.
Crabs, Boldin, Hyde are chillin. VD coming open. Kap has his eyes down and is looking to get out of the pocket.
Still a good pocket.
Sacked for -3. Missed 55 yard FG.

Kap Sacked #7
49ers: To Kap's left, Hi (Boldin) - Low (Miller) to attack the curl/flat defender. Levels concept (VD + Crabs) to attack the hook/curl defender to Kap's right.
STL: cover3
Kap takes the snap and looks left to the Hi-Low. Iupati briefly gives help to Martin on #99 then moves over to help Staley. Martin was not in control of his block.
Same time as pic above. Blue is the curl/flat defender and is Kap's key. If blue plays close to Miller, the passing lane to Boldin is available on the Out route. If blue gains depth, there is no passing lane to Boldin, but Miller is open.
Blue does not gain depth and Boldin is about to break on his route. Kap would be in his windup, but he has pressure in his face.
Loss of -9 sets up 2nd & 19. Set of downs results in a punt.

Kap Sacked #8
Pass pro was poor all game, but this play takes the cake.
49ers: 2 man route combination. Post + In route which is usually used to beat cover2.
STL: cover3
4 man rush versus 8 (EIGHT!) man protection.
Iupati makes sure that Martin has it under control before turning his attention to Staley versus Quinn. ADavis gets beat on a swim move, but understands he has Gore behind him to back him up.
The dam is already breaking.
Gore is about to take on a DL. With a 2 man route versus 7 in coverage, no surprise that no one is open. But that should be okay because a 4 man rush versus 8 man protection allows the QB to stand around a bit and wait for someone to become open. Perhaps once SJ makes his way across the field.
Staley gets beat around the edge. Martin did not have it under control. Boone is holding out again. ADavis chillin cause he knows Gore got his back. Vance is on his back, tripped by the DL that swam by ADavis. VD has no one to block.
Loss of -4 sets up 3rd & 15. Punt is shanked for 23 yards.

Palate cleanser.
Second pass play of the game.
1Q 1st & 10
STL :cover3
49ers: This play attacks the weak side hook/curl defender (blue) with Crabs and Boldin.
Hyde's route takes the curl/flat defender away (to the flat). If the hook/curl defender gains depth, Crabs is not open, but Boldin is. If the hook/curl defender approaches Boldin, Crabs is open.
The hook/curl defender plays tight to Boldin. A passing lane is created and Crabs works the vacated area. Kap is mid windup.
+15 yards

Thanks for all this THL. I only looked at first four sacks. There seems to be absolutely no recognition or adjustment by kap and the receivers for blitzing situations.
No hot reads or breakoffs or 3-5 yard anticipation type throws. Is that right? It looks like they're just waiting for their concepts to develop and the concepts are all 5-7 step. ALso, no appetite by kap to hit the checkdown. On sack 1 miller clearly has tons of space and its an easy throw but kap never even glances at him. on sack 2 stevie johnson looks like he has a lot of room to adjust his route as well for an easy 5-7 yard gain in 2 seconds. Again he may as well have run his route on the moon as far as kap is concerned. It looks like kap reads the primary concept, then, 2-3 seconds later, if its not there, he looks at the rush and starts dancing. He;s a klutz, so this situation doesn't usually end well.
Is this fair?

Is it fair to suggest that kap is in a system that is not putting him in a postition to practice the fundamental check down communication he needs to master in order to survive in the NFL? Because this is not baked into any play or adjustment techinque at the line of scrimmage in this baroque, overplanned, and formation heavy playbook?
