It's natural for the fans here to think positively. I am one of them.
I also think there are some serious problems with our offense. It's true that defense has some serious gaps/injuries, but end of the day, the offense has to score points.
I don't know if its lack of proper practice/being on the same page - QB, WRs, OLine and OC? who really knows. The play on the field is evident - something is missing, and the coaches better correct it.
I just hope it gets corrected soon, otherwise it will be another great year...that falls short...again.
My personal view is that the line is the problem. Sometimes they seem incapable of opening up running room, and often they aren't giving Kaepernick time to set up for a pass. I am not blaming anyone in particular here, injuries disrupt O line play more than most positions, and we have had some injuries. Just saying, if we can get a stable group of our better linemen out there consistently, the whole O will be transformed.
The bye week is well timed this year.
Totally agree.
I'll be curious to see how they play coming out of the bye...
Iupati back, Davis back....and with Martin in there more beef up the middle. In fact, with Davis, Iupati and Martin...that some big men in there for the run game. Should be interesting to watch.
O-Line is the most precious group on a football team and most just overlook it. Teams need a near perfect combination of size, strength, continuity, experience, coaching, scheme AND a remain consistently healthy in order to stay at a top level week in and week out. Our team lacks in a few of the above mentioned categories so it's no surprise, the product we're seeing on the field.
RUNNING GAME:
Joe Staley struggles without Iupati beside him because he's a player that relies on help from a good quality LG to get push.
Iupati has been good but not great in the run game this year and that may have to do with the major lower body injuries he's suffered recently.
Daniel Kilgore was always a good athlete and was JUST starting to understand leverage in the run game but now he's out.
Alex Boone has his moments when he looks like 2012 Boone but too many moments this year where he looks like he's just trying to do way too much for no reason.
Anthony Davis has been out all year for the most part.
Jonathan Martin isn't strong enough to get a push on a regular basis...physically, he doesn't even look like a good fit for our team.
PASSING GAME
Staley has been top-notch except for a few farts vs. Denver and Chicago
Iupati has never been a good pass blocker but this year seems like he's taken a step back into rookie mode.
Kilgore (see above)
Boone has been below average and at times utter trash
Martin only plays well vs. D-Linemen that don't have good strength...otherwise, he gets his @$$ bullied at least once per drive.
I agree that the OLine has been poor for a couple of seasons. I think/hope that injury has been part of it, A Davis was injured last season with bad shoulder and it hurt his pass blocking, he's not had time this season to get in gear. Iupati is still getting over his leg break and now a concussion but he's also never been the best in pass protection, however I think that part of it was Goodwin as well last season. Goodwin was pretty poor last season in pass protection and Kilgore was very bad the first few games as well.
I am hoping that M. Martin proves to be a big asset here and I think he might. I wonder if part of the troubles last season related to Iupati and Boone trying to assist Goowdin and the same this season. while that will hold true for the first few starts for M. Martin, he seems like a potential upgrade on Kilgore and certainly the few college clips I saw of him he was a monster in the run game.
This might assist us in ressurecting the run game if we get a real grader at Centre - though Kilgore has definitely been doing a good job there recently, his pass preotection has been really poor with a lot of pressure given up the middle. I think M. Martin can handle those big guys better.
