Week 5: @ St. Louis
Overview: Win 31-17
Great Win! Kap was awesome for most of the game, minus the first few minutes. The game could be defined by the final drive before halftime: down 14-3, on our own 4 yard line, 2nd and 11. We complete back-to-back Boldin receptions underneath. Then a false start and a shovel pass for no gain set us up in 3rd and 6...
Was it a blown coverage: of course! Was it a beautiful pass: of course! Was it a great route: of course! Did it save our season... very well could have!
Our defense seemed slow and flummoxed by Austin Davis to star the game. Hell, they were comparing him to Drew Brees at one point. Then the iron gates shut and we dug our heals in, and we snuffed out any chance of a comeback. On one side of the field Kap was lighting it up, and on the other, our defense was flying around. Kudos to Perrish Cox and Dan Skuta for excellent games. Skuta should have had 3 sacks had it not been for a completely unnecessary penalty by Brooks.
The short yardage play calling at the end of the game was particularly curious. I tend to be conservative, and almost always take the points when I can. I would have kicked the FG both times without blinking. But I'm not coaching .
Big picture, huge win coupled with a SEA loss puts us right back into the thick of the race. No rest for the weary though, as we go back-to-back away games on short rest vs. a very potent Broncos attack. Our defense better be able to get pressure with 4, that's a must. If we need blitzes to sustain pressure, then Manning will filet us all night.
Penalties:
Ahmad Brooks:
1. Illegal Hands to the Face, 5 yard Penalty, Automatic First Down
- Comment: On 2nd and 6, Brooks' penalty wipes out a Dan Skuta sack that would have put the Rams in 3rd and 15. This penalty directly led to 7 pts by the Rams and it wasn't even related to the play. Brooks continues to be the most penalized player on our team, and continues to provide opponents' offenses with 2nd chances.
Eric Reid:
1. Illegal Contact, Half the Distance, Automatic First Down
- Comment: on 2nd and goal from the 6, Reid's penalty contributed to an incomplete TD. But the Rams scored anyway 3 plays later, so this penalty was inconsequential.. Either they score here and Reid doesn't contact the receiver, or they score later.
Vernon Davis:
1. False Start, 5 yard Penalty
- Comment: Brutal start for Davis. He puts minimal effort into his slant, which is almost intercepted on the first play, then he commits a false start on the second. Niners immediately are in 2nd and 15 to start their drive and they would go 3 and out (with a bizarre Illegal Substitution penalty that was not counted as Boldin dropped the poor pass from Kap). But Davis' penalty immediately started us off on the wrong foot.
Joe Staley:
1. False Start, 5 yard Penalty
- Comment: Just before halftime, this penalty appeared to end any hopes of getting some points before half, but as we all know, the 80 yard bomb ensued, so this was an inconsequential penalty.
Andy Lee:
1. Delay of Game, 5 yard Penalty
- Comment: Penalty was on purpose to give himself better punting yardage. This penalty was completely inconsequential.
Total: 5
Turnovers:
1. Vance McDonald
- Comment: After picking up 21 yards on a great drag route, St. Louis hit's McDonald right on the forearm during the tackle and he coughs it up. This penalty hurt as it was back-to-back 20+ yard pickups (Boldin the play before), and we had momentum going into St. Louis' territory. St. Louis then drives down and scores a TD. This turnover was essentially a 10-14 pt swing.

Missed 3rd Down Opportunities:
1. 3rd and 2:
- Comment: Went 3 and out to start the game. Kap missed Boldin for an easy completion, however Looney illegally substituted, so it would have been 3rd and 7 had Boldin caught the ball. Down 7 and we go 3 and out... that's a very poor way to start on the road.
2. 3rd and 8:
- Comment: Davis' drop on the play before changed the down and distance from 3rd and 2, to 3rd and 8. Kap does complete underneath to Davis, but he's dropped immediately. The Rams sold out on the blitz and Kap had no time. This missed opportunity was a result of Davis' drop.
3. 3rd and 3:
- Comment: On 3rd and short, the Niners call up a deep fade route to Boldin that was slightly overthrown. The Rams did come on the blitz, but that seems like a low-percentage throw for that situation. Dawson does come through with the long FG conversion, so all was not lost.
4. 3rd and 8:
- Comment: This long down and distance was set up by the 4 yard loss on the Hyde run. Kap stands in the pocket, but the Rams create good pressure (one of the only times all night) and Kap can't find Crabtree for the first. Good defense by the Rams as the Niners had all the momentum at this point, scoring TDs on both of their previous drives.
5. 3rd and 4:
- Comment: Similar to the Boldin deep fade. This time attempted to Johnson. The pass was closer but still out of the reach of Johnson. The Rams sent everyone, so this play could have been huge if they connected. Still wonder about that play selection as it's a low risk, low reward situation. But with a 10 pt lead in the 4th quarter, you can understand it better than the previous example. Lee's punt following was a thing of beauty though!!
6. 3rd and 11:
- Comment: Kap throws a laser to Crabtree for 10.5 yards. Crabs does an excellent job of getting his feet in bounds. The only issue I have is we go for it on forth again, as opposed to taking another FG.
Total: 6
Missed Red Zone Opportunities:
1. 1st and Goal from the 3
- Comment: In full clock-kill mode, we can't convert any points, but were robbed a TD to McDonald when Vernon and him collided. Still, a curious decision to not take 3 pts there though. But it didn't come back to bite us, so no harm, no foul.
Total: 1
Burned TO:
1. Colin Kaepernick
- Comment: 1st and goal on the 5, we take a TO to talk it over (up 10 at this point). Not a deal breaker.
