Week 2: Chicago
Overview: Loss 28-20
Brutal... that was the worst I've seen Kap play. Just fell apart. Give props to Culter and Marshall for handing us our a**es. This is one of those games we watch the tape and throw it away. Thankfully SEA lost, so a win this week and we're fine. But this has got to stop NOW!! Harbaugh is now 4-0 in openers and 1-3 in game 2s .
Penalties:
Joe Staley:
1. Offensive Holding, 10 yards
- Comments: Kills a Kaepernick 1st down on a rush. Makes 3rd and 20, but were bailed out due to a defensive holding penalty, so it was inconsequential.
2. False Start, 5 yards
- Comment: Moves 3rd and 7 to 3rd and 12, which was then intercepted and essentially was the kiss of death.
Johnathan Martin:
1. False Start, 5 yards
- Comment: Pushes a 3rd and 5 to a 3rd and 10, which resulted in a FG and killed the drive (see missed 3rd down).
LJ McCray:
1. Unnecessary Roughness, 15 yards
- Comment: Bears start on the 35 as opposed to the 20. Bears would have gone 3rd and out (see Jimmy Ward).
Jimmy Ward:
1. Illegal Use of Hands, 5 yards
- Comment: Killer penalty as it would have been a 3 and out from the Bears, but Bears ultimately punt, so inconsequential.
Andy Lee:
1. Delay of Game, 5 yards
- Comment: Purposeful penalty for better punting field position, inconsequential.
Chris Borland:
1. Offensive Holding, 10 yards
- Comment: Penalty pushes field position from the SF 42 to the SF 25.
Anquan Boldin:
1. Offensive Holding, 10 yards
- Comment: Brutal penalty eliminating an AWESOME TD by Gore. 2 plays later, Kap fumbled. The penalty did spring Gore, but Gore has a propensity for gaining extra yards even after contact, so it probably was at least a 15 yard negative play.
Justin Smith:
1. Defensive Holding, 5 yards and Automatic 1st Down
- Comment: Marshall ended up gaining 4 yards, and the next play was the 25 yard scramble by Cutler. Hard to determine if the penalty had any real bearing.
Perrish Cox:
1. Illegal Contact, 5 yards and Automatic 1st Down
- Comment: On 3rd and 10, an incomplete pass to Jeffery would have stalled the drive and kept 7pt off the board. Another penalty that had marginal effect on the WR, but devastating outcome.
Quinton Dial:
1. Roughing the Passer, 15 yard penalty
- Comment: On 1st and 15, would have been an incomplete pass and a long down and distance situation. Completely unnecessary and it resulted in a TD... very poor.
Dan Skuta:
1. Unnecessary Roughness, 10 yards
- Comment: Just pushes us back to the SF 10 to start, another dumb penalty and it was the first play of the half. At this point, we're coming apart at the seems from all fronts.
Corey Lemonier:
1. Illegal Use of Hands, 5 yards and Automatic First Down
- Comment: Kills what would have been a 3 and out from the Bears, that also results in a Bears TD. We were in full meltdown mode at this point, even with a 2 score advantage (also see Dontae Johnson).
Dontae Johnson:
1. Illegal Contact, 5 yards and Automatic First Down
- Comment: Another killer that would have stalled their drive and keep those 7 pts off the board. Was completely unnecessary as well.
Colin Kaepernick:
1. Unsportsmanlike Conduct, Half the Distance
- Comment: They were already at the 6 yard line, and the scored on the next play, so I'd say this frustration penalty was inconsequential.
2. Delay of Game, 5 yard Penalty
- Comment: Down 28-20 with 1:24 to go from the CHI 25, the last thing you need is to push a 3rd and 12 to a 3rd and 17, especially with TOs to burn.
Total: 16
Turnovers:
Colin Kaepernick:
1. INT by C. Conte
- Comment: 1st down play, Kaepernick tried to force a deep pass to Boldin. Conte had an excellent, diving INT. Would have liked to see a commitment to the ground game on 1st down. But I guess they were hoping for a 'splash play'. The Bears followed the INT up with a 3 and out, so it was fairly inconsequential. But it definitely started the downhill spiral.
2. FUM by J. Allen
- Comment: 1st down play, Kaepernick tries to get extra yards and gets stripped by an excellent play by Allen putting his helmet on the ball. Kap was too cavalier with the ball, and you could see he was trying to overcome the previous turnover. The fumble also eliminates a scoring opportunity as they were in FG range.
3. INT by K. Fuller
- Comment: 1st play after the TD. Kap takes full responsibility for this throw. Very troubling. At this point, this may have been Kap's worst outing.
4. INT by K. Fuller
- Comment: On 3rd and 12, Kap forces another throw, leading to another quick score --> 28-20.

Sacks (Attributed):
My wife delete the game from my DVR... I'll need some help by our fellow NT'ers to finish this part... please help!
1. Kap sacked for 0 yards by S. Paea. If memory serves, it was Looney who got manhandled on this play.
2. Kap sacked for 5 yards by S. McClellin... I don't recall the assignment on this one. But the sack put us behind the 8-ball and eventually led to Kap's last INT.
3. Kap sacked for 6 yards by W. Young. I believe J. Martin was abused on this play. We were able to recover and get a first down however.
4. Kap sacked for 5 yards by W. Young. Again J. Martin, and again we recovered.

Missed 3rd Down Opportunities:
1. 3rd and 10:
- Comment: Kaepernick hits Hyde for 5 yards but play had very little chance of making the first down. Seemed to be deliberately conservative to maintain a FG.
2. 3rd and 1:
- Comment: FG dive on 3rd and 1 is the least imaginative play ever... just bad and the Bears knew it was coming.
3. 3rd and 6:
- Comment: On 3rd and 6 from the 7 yard line, we go with an inside rush... after running inside rushes on 1st and 2nd down... very uninspired play calling.
4. 3rd and 13:
- Comment: Kap scrambles for 7 and we pick up the forth down to keep the drive alive.
5. 3rd and 17:
- Picked up 8 yards on a pass to Gore, but ultimately didn't pick up the forth down to lose.
Total: 5
Missed Red Zone Opportunities:
1. With a 1st and 5 from the 6, we run 3 consecutive times for a combined -1 yards resulting in a FG. This was a devastating momentum swing as well.
