Did Troy Aikman Create the 49ers O-Line Hype ?

First off, yes I do think the offensive line is good. But anyone who watches the games knows that our offensive line is overhyped. I think this all started with Troy Aikman making comparisons between the 49ers offensive line, and his old Cowboys offensive line in their championship years - big, mauling, physical etc. Lazy analysts in other broadcast outlets picked up on this and have been using it as a staple sound bite from this point forward. And I think this created the hype we see and hear now when watching broadcasts of 49ers games. Just thought it was interesting to see how one man's words (and I'm not saying it is only him, but I think his words were a big influence) can help create and mold perception on a national stage.

maybe its also what helped alex boone get big headed and lose track that its a team sport. id say our oline are better run blockers than pass protectors but they ade improving in their pass protection.

I think the heavy run blocking emphasis and the general drafting philosophy (huge mauling guys vs. more athletic, mobile) is stunting the growth of the offense. I think this hurts us in general in the passing game, and specifically by limiting our ability to effectively utilize screen passes and other short passing concepts that require quickness and mobility from the blockers. Joe Staley is the only athletic starter that we have on the line.

If you can't run the ball..then your passing can only last so long

Yeah he started saying we were as good as his Cowboys OL (maybe almost as close in the run game in 2012) but the other years and in pass protection no way. Then after Troy said it everyone else followed. Solari is overrated and so is our OL. We are very inconsistent... Iupati and Boone are now overrated, Kilgore so far is average. Staley is back to being our best OL and Davis is pretty solid too. It doesn't help that Roman is predictable with the run a lot though. Looney might be an upgrade, then if we can let Iupati go after this year and if Boone would re-sign put him at LG and we might be a better OL for it. That or let both go save a ton of money and have Brandon Thomas as the LG. Would probably be a solid OL, that along with Martin taking over at C and Kilgore backing up C/G/T. Could look something like Staley, Thomas, Martin, Looney, Davis, Kilgore, Martin, Rookie/etc, or Staley, Boone, Martin, Looney/Thomas, Davis, Kilgore, Looney/Thomas

I don't know who started it but it's been going on since we got Gore. Virtually all the talking heads have been overhyping our OL and underrating our QBs and RBs for nearly a decade. The only exception I'm aware of is former OL Mark Schelereth, who has said for years that our OL is very weak in pass protection.

After all of this with Boone can the team demand he pay his fines if he holds out to the week before he gets a full season credit? Would you trust Boone to protect anyone now?

2012 they were absolutely dominant in the run-game. That alone made them the best o-line in the league at the time. They've always been average at best in pass-pro , and last year there was a collective drop-off. I don't think they're overhyped, but they need to get back to playing at 2012 levels.
