He's just not a very good quarterback. That's the reason he's available every single season, why the Bengals opted to go with Jason Campbell rather than bring him back. He's the ultimate preseason hero every single year but you don't want him starting an actual game.
When fans start to act like they can see something that apparently nobody else in the NFL can, that should be telling. If Johnson was as good as his performance in the 3rd and 4th quarters of preseason games seems to indicate to some, he'd always have multiple teams fighting over him.
You make it sound like every QB in the NFL is in play to compete for a starting job or something. When has Johnson been on a team where he was actually be looked at to be a starter? He was a small school QB drafted in the 5th round. TB was going the vet retread route the first couple years he was there...yes he did eventually get beat out by Freeman in like his (JJ's) 3rd or 4th year, but does that mean he's garbage?
And so what if the Bengals went with Campbell...it's not like he and JJ actualy competed head-to-head, Bengals probably like the idea of the former-starter-vet backup, but you've seen Jason Campbell play, right? I'm not saying JJ is great, but all I can go by is what I've seen him do, granted most of that being in preseason games...but in both camps the 49ers have had him, he's been clearly better than his direct competition (Tolzien, Gabbert)...he's got a strong arm with some touch, pretty accurate, runs well, and almost no change in offense required. Maybe I'm wrong and he comes into a game and stinks on ice...but at this point I do think he could do an adequate job and 99.9% sure he'd do it better than Gabbert.
