Sorry but Crabs and Boldin are more kind of possession WR with good but certainly not elite-speed. No comparison to Johnson or Ellington.
Thus, we don't have 5 CLONES there.

Cutting Lloyd would be the smart move. He makes too much for a 5th receiver, he's obviously not in the team's long-term plans like Ellington and Patton could be, and there's a good chance that he doesn't go to another team but instead sits at home waiting for us to resign him once someone gets hurt.
1. Crabtree
2. Boldin
3. Stevie Johnson
4. Ellington (also as KR/PR)
5. Patton
6. Osgood
At running back I'd keep Gore, Hyde, Winston, Smith, and Miller. If healthy, I'd keep Lattimore over either Winston or Smith though.
I'd also like to cut Tukuafu. In a pinch, Hyde, Smith, or anyone of our TE's could play FB.
This. I don't see any real need for Tukuafu. He's just basically another blocking body. He won't be needed on the DL due to the depth there so I see his overall role as extremely limited.

on the LMJ thing, i dont think we can just assume lattimore is coming back this season. and if he were to it would like be an inactive on gameday. if we're done with LMJ so be it, wont break my heart. i just dont think we can say lattimore will be back as part of that equation. its very possible its another redshirted yr for him.

Johnson looked good in his time out there, but does anyone actually think he could start a game? I don't.
Agree..yes I could see Johnson starting a game for the 49ers, and given the choice it wouldn't even be close between him and Gabbert.

49ers are screwed eitherway. Gabbert or Johnson. Each preseason Johnson has a heroic third and fourth quarter playing versus guys who won't be in the NFL much longer, and then yet for some reason, he continues to be available every single offseason in a quarterback starved league. I think his performance against top competition would be far more reminiscent of what we saw in the first preseason game.

I can't remember exactly what the play was, either a bubble screen or a quick out by the RB, but Ward made the play of the game IMO. Well, not the play of the game but my personal favorite play. Anyways, quick pass to the outside; Ward one on one and the receiver only needed like 4 yards. Ward steps up, wraps the guy up, then sweeps his feet with his hands. That play could have went for a lot of yards, but instead I'm pretty sure they were forced to punt. Love to see guys be able to make the play one on one on the outside. Should also help in the run game.

If Gabbert makes it over jj then its obvious the coaches are full of s**t and roster spots are not based on performance.

I think the ST gunner battle will come down to Spillman vs Osgood. I give the edge to Osgood because he can block punts and did it a couple times versus SEA last season. Osgood is not a good WR, but Spillman is a terrible safety. It's time to give that backup safety spot to McCray, who I have no idea is good or bad, but at least he's young and should have some upside. DMorris is the guy that makes Spillman expendable on STs. Morris seemed to do well on STs this preseason.
YES to #10. Finally, let's see some real football.

Lol. His past work def makes me think he could start a game.

Clearly, not all roster spots are based strictly on performance.
Other factors are involved, such as salary cap and player issues (like locker room chemistry, potential, reliability, and simply a player's wishes).
Unfortunately, we as fans don't know about all the other factors; we're limited to what we see in preseason games and what we read about in the media (who are also limited, some more than others).
JJ may not want to stick around just to be the backup; he may want to go to a team where he has a chance to start. He got cut two seasons ago, yet had no problem, apparently, returning to the Niner's this year.
Did Harbs bring him in so that JJ could showcase his abilities for other teams, knowing full well that he wouldn't beat out Kap and didn't want to just hold a clipboard all season? JJ would have a much better chance to earn a starting QB position in St. Louis, wouldn't he?

I'm not sure what you have against Johnson. He's clearly a much better quarterback than Gabbert. Gabbert has missed wide open receivers all preseason. Johnson is clearly the better option if Kaepernick ever goes down.

RB depth on this power running team seems larger than ever, the WR situation is as good as its ever going to get (short of starting a hall of famer like Rice). Most importantly, the young guys they've brought in to handle the pass rushing duties are all looking very good. The future appears bright, my friends.
I disagree with a lot of you on Johnson. What I liken JJ to is the same as that "AAAA" baseball player. That is, he's a player who shines against lesser competition but just can't put it together when the competition gets to its highest level. Maybe when defenses play vanilla the guy looks like a monster, but he can't handle the complex stuff? I dunno...he produces at a rate just a notch below what you need at the NFL level despite his off the charts physical abilities.
Johnson is a great QB to have if you need to face 2nd or 3rd stringers. People get all hyped up about him but I see a guy who's a #3 NFL QB at best. Decent talent, knows the system very well but if the 49ers have to count on him in games that matter against teams fully scheming on defense....they're f**ked anyways. I could easily see him starting for a team like Houston, but it would be a temporary promotion at best.
He makes all the throws Gabbert MISSES. Doesn't matter what stringers he's up against.

He's just not a very good quarterback. That's the reason he's available every single season, why the Bengals opted to go with Jason Campbell rather than bring him back. He's the ultimate preseason hero every single year but you don't want him starting an actual game.
When fans start to act like they can see something that apparently nobody else in the NFL can, that should be telling. If Johnson was as good as his performance in the 3rd and 4th quarters of preseason games seems to indicate to some, he'd always have multiple teams fighting over him.

So a couple thoughts on some of the responses.......
1) Josh Johnson: I think he looked good. I just don't think he'd look nearly as good against starters. I think he makes this team, but I'm not comfortable with him as the #2 QB. I am more comfortable with him though over Gabbert.
I really liked Josh coming out of college and I was really happy when they signed him last year...but I dunno if there is a workable #2 QB in there. I'd love to be wrong.
2) Ellington: I think peeps are taking me wrong. I like him. I'm just not gushing over him as many here in this forum are. He's a solid player. Good hands. Good routes. I've yet to see the speed people are talking about nor the great quickness. It isn't that I don't like him. I do. I like what I see particularly in the return game, I'm just not head over heels over him. He's solid and a keeper.

McCray was a beast on STs his preseason, too.
