The 49ers could be pretty active when cut-downs begin to try and pick up players from other teams to fill potential holes. Per the Sacramento Bee article - maybe they look at Ryan Mallett for back-up QB. So they could be looking for depth at QB, OG, NT possibly?
BUT, doesn't the pick-up of cuts work just like the waiver wire? Therefore the 49ers would be in the 30th position to claim players. It would be pretty unlikely high quality players make it all the way to 49ers to claim right? Or does it work differently?
Thanks

Someone feel free to correct me if I am wrong, but I think it depends on years of service/ games played. I dont know the exact formula, but as an example, Hunter was waived because he has played several years and has participated in every season. But conversely a player can be cut an essentially become a free agent if you havent played them enough since the start of their career or they simply havent been in the league for more than 3 or so years. Again this is really fuzzy and hopefully someone comes in with specifics, but Mallett might not be eligible to be straight up cut because he would have been active every game day for the last couple years.
I am pretty sure a good indicator is if they are practice squad elligible, if they are...then when they get cut they are basically a free agent...
Mabye I am way off base..

I thought when Marcus Cooper was cut he was claimed by KC and placed on their 53. I don't remember him choosing to sign with them.

I'd love to get Mallett. Much more talented than Gabbert.

If I'm Trent I'd offer LMJ in a trade.

no. we have gire, hyde, a couple of unknowns, hampton has done zip and marcus has not seen the field. besides until someone does better in him in real time in regards to return duties, he stays. i really doubt the niners will go find a new back up qb, the coaches ego would not permit it

You may be right.
But if they really want the guy then that'd probably the way to go. I'm not sure we have anyone else attractive enough to offer.

Hey man- you're the one who sounds a little pissed off. If so - WHY?
I'm just throwing some things out in regard to what else is being said.
LIKE I SAID - "If they really want the guy ...."
Frankly I don't care at all one way or the other- I'm just chiming in.
I agree w/you, we'll probably stand pat.
I also think you're over-playing the JH ego thing. IMO, both he and Baalke did the Gabbert trade.
BUT Only time will tell.

LOL, Mallett has thrown 4 NFL passes and completed one of them. He's two years older than Gabbert as well.

The more I read this the bigger the Gabbert mistake becomes. He was intended as our #2, and I'm betting it was Coach H who wanted the former first rd pick. I bet he saw him as the backup qB, long term answer. But as we found out, there is no there, there. On top of that, it screws up the winnowing process on O when neither potential backup can complete a pass. This trade has been a can of worms from the day it was made...and we still don't know who we keep on O, because our lousy backup Qbs just aren't NFL caliber. OUCH .

The issue is Gabbert is due $2 million no matter what, so he won't be getting cut. He is the backup and we have to suck it up for a year lol. Mallet didn't really impress me in preseason either and he will be a FA at the end of the year as well.

It's just the chattering crowd that is panicking on Gabbert. I don't think the coaching staff is upset at all. Roman said yesterday it's a matter of cohesion, not individual player issues. Blaine has the least amount of time in the system of all the QBs on the roster, and the least familiarity with his teammates. Plus the misses with Patton could be on either player. Harbaugh specifically said that Patton was slow getting his head around on the interception.
