I know there is a speculative aritcle about it on the front page, but I was thinking it a while back....I would be kicking the tires on Mallett. Since it is looking like he may be cut and no deals have been made, maybe we could get him for a late pick or a guy we might be looking at cutting.

That wouldn't be a bad pick up. I'm sure he can lead his receivers and hit their numbers unlike Gabbert.

Mallett gets beat out by Jimmie Garoppolo, I'm sure he's going to come in and beat out Gabbert.

Hopefully, if BG had to play & had a strong running game and good receivers, he'd be ok. Let's just hope Kap stays healthy. I'm actually more concerned about the OL & the defense (until Aldon & Bowman get back).

Somebody will try and sneak a talented QB thru waivers and Trent will snap them up.
I never heard any talk about Colt McCoy being useless. True JH never used him except to kneel down, but he could hit guys in practice, and had no trouble running the team...unlike gabbert and to some extent, now Josh.
And Wally, you mean running against 10 in the box....like we faced most of last yr?
Yup!
At this point I have zero confidence in Gabbert. I think teams would flat out challenge him to throw.
I was VERY hopeful when the trade was made but after watching the first 2 exhibitions where he wasn't accurate on very short passes I'm seriously doubtful.
Maybe he can turn it around and like most - I hope we never have to find out.

If Gabbert has to play, there will be no dropoff in effectiveness. He'll have the system substantially mastered by the time the regular season rolls around, and the talent around him is much better than he's ever had the luxury of in the past. This is a guy who came in as a rookie without training camp, in 2011, and beat out David Garrard in Jacksonville. Garrard was one of the more effective quarterbacks in the league at the time, and in his prime. He was certainly considered better than Alex Smith, three years ago, and Kaepernick couldn't beat out Smith for the starting role.

I dont understand why Josh Johnson isn't getting a serious look? He's experienced in the system, athletic, and has performed relatively well throughout camp and the preseason (minus the last game)

Originally posted by NCommand:Johnson. He's very close to Harbaugh, could be a solid career backup for years here (remember, he hasn't gotten any snaps with the 1's yet d/t us giving Gabbert the benefit of the doubt), plus his game mirrors CK's and we wouldn't have to change the game plan with him in there compared to Gabbert AND he'd be much cheaper. His issue has always been mental but as long as he is here and can continue to nail down our system, we can wins some games with him if needed. Gabbert? No chance in hell.
I'm in agreement with you here.
