Day 10 Recap

1. Colin Kaepernick

@chrisbiderman Harbaugh said he expects Kaepernick to play "a couple of drives at the most" in Thursday's opener

2. Carlos Hyde

@mattmaiocco Running back Carlos Hyde was back returning kickoffs. He struggled a couple of days ago, and he had difficulty fielding the ball on Monday, too. He misjudged one kickoff and the ball tore his fingernail. He sat out a short time but returned to finish practice

@taylorprice49 Rookie running back Carlos Hyde nicked a fingernail during a kick return drill, but the second-round pick later returned to practice.

@mattbarrows Hyde was back on the field as if nothing had happened. It seems he cut his finger but did not, Jim Harbaugh said, lose a fingernail. "A little bloody around the edges," he said.

@grantcohn Early in practice he took a carry that was designed to go off right tackle. Hyde spotted a hole back on the left side of the line and cut back. It was a jump cut, something you usually see from smaller, quicker backs. "Nice cut, Carlos!" Harbaugh yelled.

3. Quinton Patton

@taylorprice49 Offensive Play of the Day Pick any of Quinton Patton's dozen or so catches. The second-year receiver continued to "stack" another good practice on top of his previous efforts, according to Harbaugh. Patton caught 10-or-more passes with Michael Crabtree and Brandon Lloyd out of action with minor leg injuries. On one occasion, Patton ran a deep crossing route and made a tremendous grab on a pass that was thrown slightly behind his body. The highlight of Patton's day was seeing the young receiver run every ball into the end zone. It didn't matter if it was from 20 yards out or from 60-plus yards out, Patton was running the ball into the end zone. Patton said he picked up the tip from Anquan Boldin. But you know who did that first? 49ers fans know the answer. It was Jerry Rice. The G.O.A.T.

@grantcohn Made eight catches during team drills. No one caught as many passes as Patton, the 49ers' leading receiver in camp

4. Marcus Martin

@taylorprice49 Rookie center Marcus Martin saw action with the second-team during 11-on-11 work

5. Dillon Farrell

@taylorprice49 Undrafted rookie Dillon Farrell played saw action at center and at right tackle.

6. Jonathan Martin

@chrisbiderman Tackle Jonathan Martin got time at left tackle Monday for the first time this camp. Joe Staley did not appear injured. It was likely just an opportunity for Martin to get some reps there given the likelihood Staley will play just a series or two.

7. Lawrence Okoye

@mattmaiocco Gabbert had to leave the pocket due to pressure from defensive end Lawrence Okoye against left tackle Carter Bykowski. Gabbert rolled to his right and hit tight end Derek Carrier for about a 20 yard touchdown against C.J. Spillman.

8. Aldon Smith

@grantcohn Toyed with second-team left tackle Carter Bykowski. Sometimes Smith would bulrush Bykowski into the quarterback. Easy. And when Bykowski braced for that, Smith slapped his hands out of the way and ran around him. It looked like Smith didn't even have to try.

9. Ahmad Brooks

@mattmaiocco Outside linebacker Ahmad Brooks took an outside rush around right tackle Dillon Farrell to strip quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson of the ball

@taylorprice49 Aldon Smith and Ahmad Brooks had a field day rushing against the second-team offensive line. Brooks beat Farrell on one occasion and stripped quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson.

@grantcohn Smacked the ball out of McLeod Bethel-Thompson's hands when he was standing in the pocket, and then Brooks tagged Bethel-Thompson for a sack on the very next play.

10. Patrick Willis

@grantcohn Patrick Willis planted Jewel Hampton on a run up the middle.

11. Michael Wilhoite

@mattbarrows Michael Wilhoite continues to work with the first-team defense and has been solid.

12. Nick Moody

@grantcohn Played his best practice of camp. Knocked away two passes (one was in the end zone), and he sacked Josh Johnson once on a blitz up the middle.

13. Chris Borland

@mattmaiocco Chris Borland made a nice read and reacted by breaking up a pass to Stevie Johnson.

@mattmaiocco Gabbert tried to find Carrier. Craig Dahl and Spillman tipped the ball, and Borland made the interception off the deflections

@mattbarrows Chris Borland nearly came up with a pick-six scenario when he read Bethel-Thompson's eyes on a shallow crossing route. Borland made a nice break on the ball but could not come up with the snag.

@grantcohn Tipped one pass and intercepted one that Craig Dahl tipped. Borland seems to get his hands on the ball at least once during every practice.

14. Shayne Skov

@mattmaiocco Shayne Skov got turned around in coverage and fell, as Chuck Jacobs caught a pass on a crossing route behind him

@mattbarrows Shayne Skov has been consistently good, especially in the last week.

15. Chris Culliver

@taylorprice49 Chris Culliver did not participate in practice. Jim Harbaugh said Culliver was working through a minor injury.

16. Perrish Cox

@chrisbiderman Cox intercepted Colin Kaepernick for the third time this training camp - he did so twice in one practice last week - on a fade route to Reed in the back right corner of the end zone. Cox had position and made a diving play in the area of the field that's ended the 49ers' last two seasons. Surely the play resonated with fans in attendance

@mattmaiocco Cornerback Perrish Cox intercepted a Colin Kaepernick pass intended for David Reed in the end zone. Cox had another interception of a Josh Johnson pass for Wylie.

@taylorprice49 Defensive Play of the Day Cook had a lot of competition in this category. Perrish Cox, the other first-team starting cornerback, narrowly edged out Cook to take home the honor. Cox intercepted Colin Kaepernick in the back right corner of the end zone on a fade pass intended for wide receiver David Reed. Cox out-jumped Reed and maintained possesion as he fell to the ground.

@grantcohn Intercepted Colin Kaepernick in the end zone during a red zone drill. That was the third time Cox has intercepted Kaepernick in camp.

17. Darryl Morris

@mattbarrows Cornerback Darryl Morris had a nice interception on a long sideline throw from Bethel-Thompson to Kassim Osgood.

@grantcohn Intercepted a deep pass intended for Kassim Osgood. Just like Cook, Morris turned his head early which allowed him to play the ball. Morris also broke up a short pass intended for Bruce Ellington when they were lined up in the slot.

18. Chris Cook

@chrisbiderman Cook's two interceptions both came on deep balls down the left sideline. The first was thrown by Josh Johnson looking for Devon Wylie, while the second came from Blaine Gabbert looking Chuck Jacobs. Both came during the same 11-on-11 session.

@mattmaiocco Cornerback Chris Cook, who did not record an interception in four seasons with the Minnesota Vikings, picked off two passes on the day. Cook had good coverage against Devon Wylie to make an interception of Josh Johnson along the right sideline. His second interception came on a Blaine Gabbert throw intended for Chuck Jacobs.

@mattbarrows Chris Cook. He used his big body to shield smaller receiver Devon Wylie on a sideline pattern then jumped to intercept Josh Johnson's underthrown pass. The second interception was more impressive – a diving snag on a deep throw in the end zone to receiver Chuck Jacobs from Blaine Gabbert.

@grantcohn His biggest weakness is defending the deep pass and he picked off two of those today. First he picked off a deep pass intended for Devon Wylie (Josh Johnson threw it), and then Cook picked off a deep pass intended for Chuck Jacobs (Blaine Gabbert threw it). Cook played both passes perfectly. Both times he turned his head and found the ball a couple of seconds before he caught it.

19. Eric Reid

@taylorprice49 Eric Reid broke up a pass intended for rookie receiver Bruce Ellington.

20. About The Interceptions

@ninersnation The defense had five interceptions on Monday. That is not necessarily the end of the world for the offense. I would not be surprised if the offense was a little more aggressive in training camp, knowing the repercussions are so much smaller than in a regular season game. Or even in a preseason game for that matter.

One-stop shopping and I'm loving what I'm hearing! Sad sad news about Dorsey and Hunter but no doubt, we have depth and that depth is making the most of their opportunities.

Take-aways:
~ I'm loving what I'm hearing about Ellington and how we're using him (on deep balls with his extra gear AND out of the backfield). I'm especially excited to hear there is a major emphasis on the utilization of the RB's in the passing game now and CK is getting schooled on how to throw touch passes to them.
~ Our secondary is insanely aggressive and on fire right now. Brock and Culliver are clear starters but Dontae and Cook are right on their heels and add a ton of depth. As for the slot, I honestly don't know b/c Morris has looked so good as has Ward. And now Cox is adding a ton of value at both the slot AND the outside which is critical given all the spread offenses we play.
~ Front 7 is killing it and now add Lynch to contributing to it as well. The talent and depth on this front 7 isn't even fair even when we lose our #1 middle-man. Wow.
~ Offensive scheme. I'm stoked to hear how much this team is evolving right now and with guys like Patton continuing to shine just forces the OC's hand to spread this skilled unit out and get them the ball in space. In fact, the only negative report isn't even a negative...Johnson. He's probably right where he should be learning this very complex offense but old vets (Lloyd) and youngsters (Patton/Ellington) are shining in their roles at a high level as well almost making him an afterthought. Yes, a x3 1,000 receiver is an afterthought for us right now and is battlin hard to be the #3 at best. Who stays active on the 46? Geesh!
~ TE's continue to shine in Carrier (H-back) and VD and McDonald knows he needs to continue to get work in as a receiver but the best news is that we continue to feed him which is another sign of our offensive revolution.
~ Right now, the only holes I can find is at depth at the NT and we desperately need to find a real quality swing-T. And Boone who? And I'm hoping Campbell or McCray steal a S spot for ST's and real upside in case Bethea, Reid or Ward get hurt. But the growing play of D. Morris in the slot is terrific news b/c should eith Reid/Bethea go down, Ward can slide back to S and Morris can easily slide back into the slot. And who will be our dynamic returner? BTW: Winds are pretty nuts in the evening at the new stadium. I can understand why Lee/Dawson have been putting in OT to learn all the nuances. They should have a clear homefield advantage!

PS: You have to love how consistent the TC reports have been with the real beat-writers as well.

I'm rooting hard for Patton to see a lot of playing time.

why is Bruce ellington at the bottom of the Depth Chart for our preseason game

Cuz he is a rookie and was injured and just cleared to play this week.

And he was injured in what looked like a b-ball injury. Harbaugh wasn't too happy about that. Sounds like Ellington is already working his way back up, though.
Nice to hear that Patton is lighting it up, and I'm rooting for Skov to make the team too.

Day 11 Recap

1. Only Light Practice In Shorts Before Departure To Baltimore

@taylorprice49 Players wore shorts for the practice session. Actually, four players didn't wear them, they wore game pants. Players who line up at center - Daniel Kilgore, Marcus Martin and Dillon Farrell - all have to wear practice pants so they can snap the ball efficiently in practice. Also, safety Bubba Ventrone wore his gold pants. Maybe that's a ritual.

2. Offense

@grantcohn Colin Kaepernick. Attempted just 13 passes during team drills, but completed 10 including three touchdown passes: one to Anquan Boldin, one Stevie Johnson and one to Vance McDonald. Kaepernick's first incomplete pass was intended for Bruce Ellington in the back right corner of the end zone during a red zone drill and Dontae Johnson broke up that pass easily. Kaepernick's second incompletion was a miscommunication with Stevie Johnson – Johnson broke off his route, but Kaepernick threw deep because he expected Johnson to keep running. Kaepernick's third incomplete pass was intended for Vance McDonald. He dropped it.

@grantcohn George Whitfield. The four quarterbacks practiced faking handoffs, rolling back to their right and throwing on the run into a hoop propped up in the back-right corner of the end zone. Geep Chryst ran the drill. Each quarterback tried this pass dozens of times and each quarterback completed just one into the hoop. George Whitfield completed two into the hoop. Greg Roman tried twice and missed 10 yards short both times.

@taylorprice49 Rookies L'Damian Washington and Glenn Winston made their practice debuts on Tuesday. Washington, the wideout, wore No. 82. Winston, the receiver, wore No. 31. Both saw action in team periods.

@taylorprice49 Michael Crabtree and Brandon Lloyd did not practice once again. Instead, they rehabbed their minor leg injuries

@taylorprice49 With both veterans not practicing this week, second-year receiver Quinton Patton and veteran Stevie Johnson have seen a ton of reps with the first-team offense. Johnson caught a pair of red zone touchdowns from Colin Kaepernick.

@taylorprice49 Kassim Osgood caught a 50-yard touchdown pass from McLeod Bethel-Thompson.

@taylorprice49 Second-year tight end Vance McDonald caught a one-handed seam route from Kaepernick for a 20-yard touchdown. McDonald also got past the defense later in practice for a 35-yard sideline grab.

@grantcohn Vance McDonald. The tight ends spent ten minutes at the beginning of practice catching footballs spun out of a JUGS machine. McDonald stood ten yards away from it and didn't drop a single ball. And during team drills he dropped only one – an improvement for him. McDonald also made the catch of the day, a one-handed over-the-shoulder touchdown catch on a pass thrown by Kaepernick

@grantcohn David Reed. Caught three passes when he was playing against the first-team defense as a member of the scout-team offense. Reed beat Chris Culliver down the left sideline for a 25-yard catch, and later beat Chris Cook for a 15-yard gain. Reed spun Cook around on that play. Reed is brothers with Redskins' tight end Jordan Reed.

@grantcohn Stevie Johnson. Anquan Boldin and Quinton Patton took just a handful of reps in team drills, so Johnson got four targets instead of the two or three he typically gets. He caught three passes at the beginning of practice: he beat Darryl Morris for a 10-yard touchdown catch, and he also beat Kenneth Acker and Dontae Johnson for short gains.

3. Defense

@taylorprice49 Chris Culliver and Chris Cook were the first-team cornerbacks on the left and right sides of the field, respectively

@taylorprice49 Rookie cornerback Dontae Johnson and second-year linebacker Nick Moody swatted away incoming passes during 11-on-11 work

@taylorprice49 Nose tackle Ian Williams was evaluated on the turf practice field by general manager Trent Baalke and the team's head doctor and strength coach. Williams did a couple of sled drills, the same ones the defensive line do during warmups. Williams punched a few of the bags and moved down the line, showing his stance and acceleration to demonstrate his health status for the 49ers brass. Williams could be an option to replace injured lineman Glenn Dorsey in the coming weeks. But first, Williams has to show he's healthy enough to be activated off the team's Physically Unable to Perform List

4. Interview

Very excited to hear the bolded. This means option routes are being used. I feel that this is a must for any dynamic passing attack. I also feel that this is the best way to utilize Stevie Johnson. Allow him to read coverage/leverage and have him run what he thinks is the best possible route to get open. In the play above, it appears SJ curled his route while Kap thought he was going to run a vertical route. In the past, Harbaugh had stated that he removed sight adjustments to lessen the risk of turnovers. That's all well and good, but eventually, a passing attack that adapts to the coverage being played is the best way to get a WR open. This is the second time a TC report has mentioned Kap and a WR not being on the same page, but that's why they practice.
