Day 8 Recap

5. Chuck Jacobs

@caminman Offensive play of the day: Jacobs, who might have to play his way onto a roster spot through special teams, snagged a 50-yard pass from Colin Kaepernick by stopping and jumping higher than defensive backs Chris Cook and Antoine Bethea.

@taylorprice49 Offensive Play of the Day Kaepernick's longest play of practice and of training camp was a 50-yard bomb to wide receiver Chuck Jacobs.Jacobs jumped in between cornerback Chris Cook and safety Antoine Bethea to make the deep reception. The play immediately fired up the offensive side of the ball in a competitive night practice.

@grantcohn Made the catch of the day, the catch of camp so far. Chris Cook was covering him. Jacobs ran straight down the sideline and Kaepernick threw a pass way up high for Jacobs, but Kaepernick under threw it and gave strong safety Antoine Bethea time to run over and play the ball. Jacobs slowed down, jumped over both Cook and Bethea, made the catch, landed on his feet and ran into the end zone untouched.

Gotta love how Cohn has to throw in his negative crap in his comments. These tweets from multiple source make his bias really stand out.

He knows it will get back to us here in the Zone... he mad, bro

Dontae Johnson. Intercepted McLeod Bethel-Thompson on the last play of practice. Johnson was covering Devon Wylie who ran an outward-breaking route toward the sideline. Johnson jumped the route, dove and picked off the pass. Johnson has not given up a touchdown nor has he gotten beat deep during team drills in training camp.

Not bad Rook.

Those are some big dudes.

There is some havoc about to be wreaked on NFL offenses facing this bunch.

Day 9 Recap

1. Colin Kaepernick

@caminman Kap Count: The stat line doesn't look pretty (11-of-18, 2 interceptions) but Kaepernick completed a couple passes in tight windows and has had a positive camp.

@chris biderman Colin Kaepernick was intercepted twice during team drills. The first came during a two-minute drill when multiple hands got on a pass deep down the middle of the field before the ball ended up in reserve safety D.J. Campbell's hands. Later, in a red-zone drill, Demarcus Dobbs intercepted Kaepernick in a zone blitz look where Dobbs dropped into coverage in the short-middle of the field.

@grantcohn George Whitfield tutored Kaepernick right in front of the media. They were alone on a side field – the rest of the team was on another field doing a special teams drill. Whitfield and Kaepernick were working on throwing with touch. Whitfield made Kaepernick loft passes over defenders (ball boys) while kneeling on his right knee – no legs involved in the throwing motion.

@mattmaiocco Kaepernick and Vernon Davis had their best day together with four pass completions in 11-on-11 drills, including a touchdown pass on a deep corner route against the coverage of linebacker Nick Moody.

2. Carlos Hyde

@grantcohn Was the starting tailback for the first two reps of 11-on-11 team drills – Frank Gore took the third rep. Hyde also made three catches during team drills. Two of the catches were fantastic. First, he made a 25-yard catch deep down the left sideline. But that wasn't his best catch. His best catch was just a five-yarder. He ran a shallow outward-breaking route toward the right sideline, and Colin Kaepernick fired the ball behind him. Hyde spun and caught it anyway. That was the most difficult catch anyone made during practice.

@caminman Carlos Hyde had an exhausting practice, seeing the majority of reps at running back and picking up the slack in place of the injured LaMichael James (right elbow) and Kendall Hunter (knee).Frank Gore did see some carries, as did Jewel Hampton and Alofonso Smith, but Hyde really was in there a lot to get ready for his exhibition debut. Hyde caught a 20-yard bullet from Kaepernick on a route Hyde said he ran in the Orange Bowl for Ohio State.

@mattbarrows Running back Carlos Hyde also looked good as a receiver, something which which he was struggling at the start of camp. He caught a long pass down the sideline from Kaepernick early in practice. Hyde is more comfortable after nine practices and it shows.

3. Anquan Boldin

@camniman Wideout Anquan Boldin, ejected from Friday's practice for fighting Darryl Morris, caught at least five passes in the opening hour of practice and looked unfazed by last practice's exit. On one play, Boldin caught a 20-yard pass from Colin Kaepernick against Jimmie Ward's coverage.

4. Bruce Ellington

@chrisbiderman One of the day's offensive highlights came when on a two-minute drill when the second string offense was working against the No. 2s on defense and Johnson hit Ellington deep down the right sideline for a touchdown past Morris and rookie corner Dontae Johnson. It was one of Johnson's better throws during camp to this point.

@chrisbiderman Ellington caught another touchdown from Kaepernick during team drills on a post route from the left toward the middle of the field.

@caminman Offensive play of the day: Rookie wideout Bruce Ellington appeared to tweak an ankle when he collided with Morris on a sideline catch. But Ellington came back shortly thereafter to snag a 40-yard bomb from Josh Johnson against Dontae Johnson's coverage for a would-be touchdown.

@grantcohn Dropped a pass during one-on-ones, but during team drills he made seven catches, more than any other receiver. He made half of those catches running routes out of the backfield. That was new. He made his best catch as an outside receiver, though. He lined up against Dontae Johnson and ran straight down the sideline. When Josh Johnson threw the pass, Dontae Johnson had two steps on Ellington. But Ellington had another gear. He blew past Johnson and caught a 40-yard touchdown pass.

@mattmaiocco Receiver Bruce Ellington ran a slant-and-go against Dontae Johnson for a touchdown pass of approximately 40 yards from Josh Johnson.

@mattbarrows Ellington had a drop, but he overall had a strong practice. During one-on-one drills, he slipped coming out of his break but was still able to catch a Kaepernick fastball at his earhole as he was going to the ground

5. Vernon Davis

@caminman Captain TD, er, Torpedo: Vernon Davis broke free for a 40-yard touchdown catch of a pass by Colin Kaepernick against Nick Moody's coverage.

@grantcohn Caught six passes and two touchdown passes during team drills. One of his TDs came on third-and-fifteen at the defense's 40-yard line. Nick Moody was covering Davis man-to-man. That's all Kaepernick had to see. He dropped back and threw the ball deep to Davis, who beat Moody by four or five steps. "That's why they buy your jersey, 85!" one of the coaches yelled.

6. Vance McDonald

@mattbarrows Vance McDonald continues to have trouble with drops. He couldn't hang onto a catchable pass early in practice, then couldn't come down with two seam-route throws in the end zone.

7. Derek Carrier

@andrewpentis Tight end Derek Carrier and fullback Will Tukuafu were both in the backfield for one play during team drills.

8. Marcus Martin

@andrewpentis Rookie center Marcus Martin acquitted himself well in his first NFL practice.

9. Mike Purcell

@caminman With Glenn Dorsey (left biceps) out, Mike Purcell took first-team snaps at nose tackle.

10. Tony Jerod-Eddie

@camninman Defensive tackle Tony Jerod-Eddie planted right tackle Jonathan Martin on his keister in one-on-one blocking.

@mattmaiocco Defensive lineman Tony Jerod-Eddie knocked tackle Jonathan Martin on his backside during a pass-rush drill. Jerod-Eddie again beat Martin a short time later.

@mattbarrows During one-on-one pass-rush drills, left defensive end Tony Jerod-Eddie put right tackle Jonathan Martin on his backside. You'll recall that Lawrence Okoye also victimized Martin with a decisive pancake last week. Jerod-Eddie also won the rematch with Martin although it was not nearly as one-sided as the initial matchup.

11. Quinton Dial

@caminman Quinton Dial lined up as the second-string nose tackle and crushed Alfonso Smith in the back field for a would-be loss. Dial has been a physical presence daily, in a very good way.

@grantcohn Burst into the backfield and tagged Alfonso Smith for a three-yard loss on third-and-two. Dial has the potential to be a dominant run stopper, like Red Bryant used to be

12. Demarcus Dobbs

@mattmaiocco The best defensive play of the day came when defensive lineman Demarcus Dobbs dropped into coverage from the 15-yard line and jumped high for an interception on Kaepernick's pass intended for Davis.

13. Aaron Lynch

@chrisbiderman Lynch, who has gained 20 pounds since getting drafted, looked good for his first practice. He broke up a pass Jewel Hampton deep down the right sideline. Hampton ran a wheel route and Lynch stayed with him stride for stride before breaking up the play.

@mattmaiocco Rookie outside linebacker Aaron Lynch took part in his first full practice after being limited due to a hamstring strain. Lynch had a strong practice, which began with his beating of tight end Vance McDonald in a one-on-one pass-rush drill.Lynch also broke up a Colin Kaepernick while in coverage against Jewel Hampton on a wheel route.

@mattbarrows The outside linebackers took turns rushing the passer against the tight ends. Fifth-round draft pick Aaron Lynch, who had been dealing with a hamstring injury, took part in the drill and showed his strength by burying tight end Vance McDonald. Lynch won the rematch as well.

14. Chris Borland

@mattmaiocco Linebacker Chris Borland had good coverage against McDonald in the back of the end zone on a Kaepernick pass. McDonald made a leaping attempt but could not hold on.

15. Nick Moody

@mattbarrows Inside linebacker Nick Moody was back after sitting out Friday's practice with a hamstring issue. He knocked over tight end Asante Cleveland on a running play. The competition at inside linebacker may be the best one of training camp, and Fangio said he's waiting for someone to separate himself from the pack. Wilhoite continues to take all of the first-team repetitions.

16. Chris Culliver

@chrisbiderman Jim Harbaugh had Chris Culliver replaced midway through Sunday's session after an unnecessary hit on David Reed.

@caminman Culliver angrily headed to the sideline, where he watched the remainder of practice. But Harbaugh walked with him to the locker room and Culliver calmly listened as the coach talked during that 30-second stroll, ending with Harbaugh opening the door for him and other players.Several veteran leaders came to talk with Culliver after he got ejected from the 11-on-11 session, including Vernon Davis, NaVorro Bowman, Aldon Smith and Ahmad Brooks.

17. Perrish Cox

@andrewpentis With Brock "working through something," Cox lined up with the first-team defense at outside cornerback.

18. Jimmie Ward

@chrisbiderman Josh Johnson was picked by rookie Jimmie Ward along the right sideline when Johnson was looking to connect with Bruce Ellington.

@grantcohn Broke up a deep pass intended for Kassim Osgood during one-on-one drills. Also intercepted a pass during a less-than-full-speed scout-team session. He tipped the pass away from the receiver and caught it. Ward has very good hands – that may be his biggest strength right now.

@andrewpentis Ward is not the biggest guy, sure, but he measures up to veteran safety Antoine Bethea when they're standing side by side

19. D.J. Campbell

@mattbarrows Campbell had a strong practice at safety

@caminman Defensive play of the day: Safety D.J. Campbell made a last-second swipe to knock down a potential touchdown catch by Vance McDonald in the back of the end zone. Campbell came dangerously close to landing his head on the goal post.

@mattmaiocco Safety D.J. Campbell intercepted a Kaepernick pass intended for Ellington that was deflected by cornerback Kenneth Acker

20. Defense

@mattbarrows First team LDE: Jerod-Eddie NT: Purcell RDE: Dobbs Second team LDE Tank Carradine NT: Dial RDE: Lawrence Okoye

@caminman Interceptions galore: The defense intercepted four passes, perhaps their most all camp. Jimmie Ward had his second of camp, and the others came from Demarcus Dobbs, D.J. Campbell and Perrish Cox. Warm-ups concluded with Eric Reid picking off Blaine Gabbert

21. Special Teams

@andrewpentis Wide reciver Devon Wyle, who had family watching on the sideline, shared punt return reps with cornerback Perrish Cox and Ellington.

One thing that I find interesting is that the way that Harbaugh is punishing inappropriate behavior on the field is to send the player to the showers early. That probably doesn't mean too much to Boldin who is a guaranteed starter, but for other players who are fighting for a roster spot/starting position (which is most of the team), the threat of lost snaps is huge. Camp is extremely competitive, but I think Harbaugh has found the perfect way to counter too much aggression.
