Yep eating fried Twinkies and bon bons. Guy needs to step it up. I don't see a starter on tap or from what I read at practice.
Cully still having problems with the deep routes

Hopefully he improves. You can't coach natural brute strength like he has.

Young players and rookies naturally have problems in pass protection. I wouldn't read too much when you hear stories of our young linemen getting schooled in pass rush drills. I worry more about run blocking since this offense runs so much.
Agreed, way too early to give up on Kilgore and Looney and esp. Martin.

Third And Final Public Practice At Levi's® Stadium on Wednesday Afternoon.

1. Colin Kaepernick

@grantcohn Colin Kaepernick. Completed just 8 of 16 passes during team drills. He was far less accurate today than he had been any other day this offseason. His passes were all over the place – too far, too short, behind receivers, etc.

2. Blaine Gabbert

@mattmaiocco Backup quarterback Blaine Gabbert completed each of his six pass attempts during 11-on-11 drills. All of his passes were short tosses.

3. Josh Johnson

@mattmaiocco During a 7-on-7 drill, Josh Johnson found Lance Lewis on a short touchdown pass against the coverage of linebacker Michael Wilhoite and safety Eric Reid.

4. LaMichael James

@andrewpentis Running back LaMichael James was a full-go. He was wearing a black brace around his elbow but was catching kicks with ease

@mattbarrows Running back LaMichael James was out of his blue jersey after recovering from a dislocated elbow suffered early in training camp. He is wearing a brace on his right arm.

5. Michael Crabtree

@caminman Wide receiver Michael Crabtree remained away from the team after attending Monday's birth of his son in Texas.

@paulgutierrez Wide receiver Michael Crabtree was still not in attendance, as he was in Texas the day before for the birth of his son Michael III.

6. Anquan Boldin

@andrewpentis Wideout Anquan Boldin was catching punts, bringing back memories of his younger days with the Arizona Cardinals.

@caminman Wide receiver Anquan Boldin joined LaMichael James in returning punts. Boldin last returned punts in his 2003 rookie season with the Cardinals (20 returns for 130 yards).

7. Stevie Johnson

@mattmaiocco Colin Kaepernick and veteran wide receiver Stevie Johnson could not connect on a couple of back-shoulder pass attempts, including the first throw of 11-on-11 drills against Chris Culliver's coverage

@grantcohn Targeted three times. First, he dropped a back-shoulder fade down the left sideline. Next, he dropped a deep pass that was underthrown, but he got two hands on it. Finally, he slipped on an outward-breaking route and limped off the field.

8. Bruce Ellington

@grantcohn Beat Jimmie Ward for a 10-yard gain on third-and-five during an 11-on-11 drill. Ellington has given Ward big trouble all offseason. Ellington may be the third-best receiver on the 49ers right now. He rarely drops a pass, he's fearless over the middle and he has an extra gear when the ball is in the air. It's very difficult to overthrow him on deep passes.

9. Quinton Patton

@grantcohn Targeted three times. Brock broke up the first target. Patton dropped the second target – a deep pass down the middle of the field. And Patton caught the third target for a five-yard gain.

10. Joe Staley

@andrewpentis During a drill that defensive coordinator Vic Fangio led and Jim Harbaugh oversaw, outside linebacker Aldon Smith gave left tackle Joe Staley a forceful bull rush, but Staley held his ground.

11. Anthony Davis

@andrewpentis Right tackle Anthony Davis was in a helmet and pads for the first time this training camp. Back from injury, Davis still yielded to Jonathan Martin during team drills.

12. Ian Williams

@mattbarrows I watched Ian Williams during one-on-one pass-rush drills. He looked very good, albeit against rookie Marcus Martin, on both of his attempts. Martin only recently returned to practice and, despite a good game against the Broncos, is behind the other linemen.

13. Mike Purcell

@mattbarrows Backup nose tackle Mike Purcell also was in a blue, non-contact jersey. He's played as many snaps as anyone this summer and deserves some recognition for toughing it out while a large percentage of the defensive line was on the sideline. He's a candidate for the annual – and coveted – "Iron Bee" award that gets issued at the end of the preseason.

14. Corey Lemonier

@grantcohn Beat his man just once out of four attempts during one-on-one pass rush drills. First he tried to bulrush Jonathan Martin and got blocked. Then Lemonier beat Michael Philipp with a bulrush. Then Lemonier tried to beat Carter Bykowski around the edge and got blocked. Then Lemonier tried to bulrush Dillon Farrell and got blocked.

15. Aaron Lynch

@anrewpentis On another play in the one-on-one session, rookie outside 'backer Aaron Lynch bested Martin.

@grantcohn Beat his man three of four times in one-on-one pass rush drills. First he tried to beat Al Netter around the edge and got blocked. Then Lynch beat Netter with a bulrush. Then Lynch beat Jonathan Martin around the edge. Then Lynch beat Michael Philipp around the edge. Lynch has quick, violent hands which he uses well.

16. One-On-Ones

@mattbarrows Others who stood out in one-on-ones: Aldon Smith, Ahmad Brooks, Jonathan Martin (except when he went against Aldon Smith) and rookie offensive lineman Dillon Farrell. He needs to get stronger but has had a good training camp and seemingly would be a good fit on the practice squad.

17. Patrick Willis

@andrewpentis Patrick Willis was sporting blue, non-contact jerseys, but was moving around well and without limitations

@grantcohn Practiced for the first time since he sustained a stinger against the Ravens in practice last weekend. Willis participated in team drills while wearing a blue no-contact jersey. He blitzed up the middle on second-and-six and "sacked" Blaine Gabbert. Willis played the Stack backer, or the "Jack" – the position he has played the past three seasons. Michael Wilhoite was the starting "Mike" – NaVorro Bowman's position. Up until today it had been the opposite – Willis at Mike and Wilhoite at Jack.

@mattbarrows Linebacker Patrick Willis practiced but did so in a blue "non-contact" jersey. His status for Sunday is unknown.

18. Tramaine Brock

@andrewpentis After finishing his rehab from injury, starting cornerback Tramaine Brock returned to practice on his birthday and made a big play during team drills. He picked off reserve quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson and returned the interception for a touchdown, treating fans to a quick dance. Bethel-Thompson was seeking wideout David Reed on a quick curl route

@mattmaiocco Before moving to the solid footing -- and privacy -- of the 49ers' practice fields behind the team's training complex, Brock demonstrated why the 49ers are counting on him to be the team's top cover man. Brock broke up a Colin Kaepernick pass intended for wide receiver Quinton Patton. Then, a short time later, Brock jumped David Reed's route at the right sideline to intercept McLeod Bethel-Thompson for what would have been a pick-six interception

@caminman Cornerback Tramaine Brock celebrated his 26th birthday by intercepting a McLeod Bethel-Thompson pass and returning it for a would-be touchdown.

@grantcohn Broke up a Colin Kaepernick pass that was intended for Quinton Patton. Patton ran a short comeback route. Brock jumped the route and easily knocked the ball away. About 15 minutes later Brock intercepted a McLeod Bethel-Thompson pass and returned it for a touchdown. Brock was covering David Reed, who ran another short comeback route. Brock seems to read those short comeback routes well.

@mattbarrows He made the play of the abbreviated "open" practice when he stepped in front of David Reed for a pick-six interception of McLeod Bethel-Thompson that got the assembled crowd – a few thousand – cheering.

@paulgutierrez Cornerback Tramaine Brock picked off McLeod Bethel-Thompson on a pass intended for David Reed on the right sideline and returned it 25 yards for a touchdown.

19. Jimmie Ward

@grantcohn Broke up a Kaepernick pass that was intended for Anquan Boldin. Boldin lined up in the slot and ran a short outward-breaking route. Ward sprinted past Boldin and broke up the pass. This was the first time Ward broke up a pass intended for Boldin during an open practice this offseason.

@mattbarrows Who is the team's top option at nickel cornerback? It's been hard to decipher because one of the candidates, Perrish Cox, has been starting at cornerback while Brock has dealt with an ankle injury. That has allowed first-round draft pick Jimmie Ward to get plenty of repetitions with the first-string unit as he did Sunday against Peyton Manning and the Broncos. Well, Brock was back today and Ward was still on the field when the first-team defense was in its nickel package. Let's see if that holds during the upcoming game.

20. Antoine Bethea

@andrewpentis Starting safety Antoine Bethea, who sustained a concussion in Sunday's loss to the Denver Broncos, was seen in a T-shirt and shorts, doing some light jogging on the sideline. Bethea is following the NFL's protocol

@mattbarrows The only starting defensive player who was not on the field was safety Antoine Bethea, who is going through the league-mandated post-concussion protocol. Craig Dahl lined up in his place and it would be a surprise if Bethea plays on Sunday.

21. Open Practice Cut Short

@mattmaiocco The practice session was the last time that up to 10,000 fans were allowed to watch the team practice. But less than one hour into a scheduled 2-hour, 15-minute practice, the 49ers left the field due to unsafe turf.

@paulgutierrez Even before the public practice was cut short, the poor condition of the field was obvious, from divots flying out when players made cuts to the discolored spots in the middle of the field. And if Bruce Ellington tweaking his right ankle in a one-on-one drill with cornerback Chris Culliver was not proof enough, then Stevie Johnson taking a spill untouched on an out pattern at the goal line and jerking his left leg sealed it.
