Day 12 Recap (joint practice with Baltimore Ravens)

1. Colin Kaepernick

@jamisonhensley Kaepernick completed passes at will today.

@taylorprice49 Kaepernick completed 3-of-4 passes in the opening team period against the Ravens starting defense, including a 20-yard stop fade pass to Johnson, who jumped up and beat cornerback Jimmy Smith's tight coverage on the very first play from scrimmage

@taylorprice49 Kaepernick continued the accuracy in the next team period, he completed three straight passes and found Carrier for a 35-yard seam route against the Ravens starters.

@taylorprice49 Kaepernick tried to complete a 10-yard seam pass to rookie receiver Bruce Ellington and the ball was deflected and eventually intercepted in the end zone by Baltimore cornerback Chykie Smith.

@caminman Colin Kaepernick had a pass intercepted by Chykie Brown in 7-on-7 drills but otherwise fared well, especially in targeting Boldin, Stevie Johnson and Vernon Davis.

@mattmaiocco Quarterback Colin Kaepernick had a solid practice, completing 16 of 24 pass attempts during 11-on-11 drills. He was intercepted during 7-on-7 work when his pass intended for Bruce Ellington was tipped and intercepted by safety Terrence Brooks.

@mattbarrows Colin Kaepernick looked like he usually does. His across-the middle passes, including a nice seam route to tight end Derek Carrier, were on the money. The touch passes down the sideline weren't as consistent. Overall, he was 14-22 when the teams were going 11-11.

@taylorprice49 In a move-the-ball period against the Ravens defense, Kaepernick completed 4-of-6 passes and helped set up a 55-yard Phil Dawson field goal. Kaepernick completed passes to Johnson, fullback Bruce Miller and had two more to Boldin on the drive.

2. Joe Flacco

@jamisonhensley Joe Flacco carried the momentum from a great season opener with a sharp practice. He continually found holes in the San Francisco 49ers zone, dropping in passes to his receivers. His best pass was a 50-yard completion to wide receiver Marlon Brown after Flacco rolled to his left and threw off his back foot.

3. Blaine Gabbert

@taylorprice49 Second-string quarterback Blaine Gabbert led the 49ers offense to another scoring drive, capped by a 56-yard Dawson field goal. Gabbert's best throw was a 15-yard deep crossing route to veteran receiver Kassim Osgood

4. Josh Johnson

@mattmaiocco Quarterback Josh Johnson completed 7 of 11 passes. He threw a pass that safety Anthony Levine dropped. Then on the final play of practice, he made a nice throw at the sideline to Devon Wylie, who got both feet inbounds.

@taylorprice49 Josh Johnson connected with receiver Anquan Boldin on a deep seam route at the expense of Elam

5. McLeod Bethel-Thompson

@mattmaiocco Quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson completed 9 of 10 passes. His only blemish was an interception by Ravens cornerback Marrio Norman.

6. Anquan Boldin

@mattmaiocco Anquan Boldin caught six passes.

@mattbarrows The "charged emotion" involving Boldin occurred after he caught a short crossing route then was hit by linebacker Elvis Dumervil. Boldin quickly turned around to face the linebacker. That drew a chorus of "Q!" from the Ravens standing on the sideline just a few yards away. It did not escalate.

7. Stevie Johnson

@mattmaiocco Wide receiver Stevie Johnson had his best practice a member of the 49ers. His six catches during 11-on-11 work were split equally among Kaepernick and Gabbert.

@mattbarrows Kaepernick's favorite target may have been receiver Stevie Johnson, who turned in a good practice following his strong showing in the preseason game.

@taylorprice49 The wide receiver-cornerback 1-on-1 drills began a showcase of Stevie Johnson's growing chemistry with Colin Kaepernick

@baltimoreluke WR Stevie Johnson made a great sideline catch with Jimmy Smith in coverage. Rare completion against the #Ravens CB.

@taylorprice49 Red zone 7-on-7 work saw Johnson beat Ravens cornerback Dominique Franks off the line with some nifty footwork. Johnson caught a quick slant from Kaepernick and looked quick as he fired off the line of scrimmage.

8. Bruce Ellington

@GregABedard 49ers rookie WR Bruce Ellington isn't quite as polished as the Saints' Brandin Cooks, but he's darn impressive

@mattmaiocco Bruce Ellington continued to work at punt returner. After muffing his first chance of the day, Ellington settled in and handled the rest of his chances flawlessly.

9. Lance Lewis

@taylorprice49 Lance Lewis caught two passes in the drill. He wore number 17 because the team didn't have his official uniform number 18 with them on the road.

@mattbarrows Lewis was pressed into action quickly, and he caught two deep passes along the sideline, one of them from Josh Johnson. Both, however, were out of bounds.

10. Vernon Davis

@taylorprice49 Kaepernick connected on a 25-yard deep crossing route to Vernon Davis. Baltimore safety Matt Elam had the coverage.

11. Derek Carrier

@mattmaiocco The deep 49ers' only deep pass completion went from Kaepernick to tight end Derek Carrier, who worked wide open on a seam route 20 yard down the field.

@mattbarrows Kaepernick hit Carrier streaking down the middle of the field for what would have been a 70-yard touchdown

@taylorprice49 Derek Carrier lined up as San Francisco's second tight end and caught several passes in 7-on-7 and team periods.

12. Asante Cleveland

@mattbarrows Kaepernick tried to hit Cleveland once in the back of the end zone in 7-on-7 drills only to see the pass tipped an intercepted. Another pass in 11-on-11 drills to Cleveland was picked off by safety Jeromy Miles.

13. Joe Staley

@mattbarrows Tackle Joe Staley looked good in his matchup with Terrell Suggs and Pernell McPhee.

14. Jonathan Martin

@GregABedard 49ers RT Jonathan Martin was smoked twice by Elvis Dumervil in one-on-ones. Later, Suggs put Martin on his rear. Harbaugh replaced him.

@mattmaiocco Right tackle Jonathan Martin got knocked backward to the ground while working against Terrell Suggs during an 11-on-11 drill. Martin was replaced after being slow getting up. He was all right and returned to practice.

@mattbarrows During one-on-one pass -rush drills, right tackle Jonathan Martin did not fare well against Dumervil.

@jamisonhensley Elvis Dumervil had his way with backup right tackle Jonathan Martin.

15. Adam Snyder

@mattbarrows Guard Adam Snyder was beaten handily by defensive tackle Jamie Meder.

16. Marcus Martin

@mattbarrows Fellow rookie Marcus Martin also practiced but did not look as good. Martin was overpowered a couple of times and seemed to be working through a minor ailment.

@GregABedard 49ers C Marcus Martin beat a pretty good young DT (Lewis-Moore) in back-to-back 1-on-1s.

17. Tank Carradine

@mattbarrows Defensive end Tank Carradine powered through a thigh bruise suffered Thursday and took part in the practice. He knocked away a Joe Flacco pass on a bootleg late in practice.

@jamisonhensley Like he's done for most of camp, guard Kelechi Osemele was crushing defensive linemen. Osemele knocked 49ers defensive tackle Tank Carradine to the ground three times during one session of team drills.

18. Ahmad Brooks

@mattmaiocco Outside linebacker Ahmad Brooks broke up a Flacco pass at the line of scrimmage.

@taylorprice49 Ahmad Brooks recorded a sack on Tyrod Taylor and later broke up a Joe Flacco pass on a designed rollout

19. Aaron Lynch

@mattbarrows Lynch went through his first full practice of training camp and looked very powerful rushing from the left side.

@mattmaiocco Rookie outside linebacker Aaron Lynch beat the block of running back Bernard Pierce for a would-be sack.

20. Chris Borland

@taylorprice49 Chris Borland broke up a pass intended for Ravens tight end Phillip Supernaw.

21. Chris Culliver

@mattmaiocco Steve Smith got deep over the top of starting cornerback Chris Culliver to haul in a 40-yard pass from Flacco. Culliver also was called for pass interference on the play.

22. Perrish Cox

@taylorprice49 Perrish Cox recorded an interception on Tyrod Taylor.

@mattmaiocco Cornerback Perrish Cox recorded the 49ers' only interception during 11-on-11 work. He also surrendered a touchdown to Steve Smith during a red-zone drill.

23. Dontae Johnson

@mattmaiocco Flacco and Michael Campanaro hooked up on a 50-yard pass against the coverage of rookie Dontae Johnson.

@taylorprice49 Rookie cornerback Dontae Johnson recorded an interception of his own against Tyrod Tyler after giving up a 50-yard deep touchdown to Ravens rookie receiver Michael Campanaro.

24. Darryl Morris

@mattmaiocco Flacco found Steve Smith for a 40-yard touchdown against the coverage of cornerback Darryl Morris.

25. Jimmie Ward

@taylorprice49 First-round draft pick Jimmie Ward was observed breaking up a deep sideline pass thrown by Taylor.

26. Antoine Bethea

@mattmaiocco Safety Antoine Bethea broke up a Tyrod Taylor deep pass intended for tight end Owen Daniels.

27. Eric Reid

@taylorprice49 Second-year safety Eric Reid nearly recorded a diving interception on Tyrod Taylor, too.

28. C.J. Spillman

@mattmaiocco Safety C.J. Spillman made a good play to break up a deep pass intended for Jacoby Jones.

29. Andy Lee

@mattmaiocco Andy Lee blasted a punt that sailed 75 yards in the air – far over the head of the Ravens return man.

30. Health Watch

@mattbarrows Receiver Brandon Lloyd warmed up but did not practice. He seems close to returning.

@caminman Tight end Vance McDonald did not practice, apparently because of an undisclosed but minor injury

@taylorprice49 Second-year tight end Vance McDonald did not practice. Jim Harbaugh praised the backup tight end for his performance against the Ravens and did not mention any injury to McDonald when he spoke with reporters earlier in the day.

@taylorprice49 Demarcus Dobbs took part in practice after the fourth-year defensive tackle suffered a leg injury in Thursday's preseason opener.

@caminman Only five defensive linemen practiced, and one of those missing was defensive tackle Lawrence Okoye (leg).

i just think everyone will be better in the next game than what they were last week. people like looney will only get better the more times he does them, same for our backup quarterbacks. i think we have also said, if they show little or no progress by the third pre season game, then you have to have a different conversation but i feel it will not get to that
Thanks DeUh (and others)! Keep up the good work! The picture above makes me dizzy!

That probably doesn't mean too much to Boldin who is a guaranteed starter, but for other players who are fighting for a roster spot/starting position (which is most of the team), the threat of lost snaps is huge. Camp is extremely competitive, but I think Harbaugh has found the perfect way to counter too much aggression.
Agree The dude is not stupid! That's for sure. Compare him to guys like Dennis Erickson and Simpletary - and you can see stupidity in violent action.

Ditto! Again thanks DeUh!
Sounds like the Ravens are mauling us physically again and throwing up hail Mary completion bombs again. Better to work on it now.

I think the practice notes sound like they are improving. We have some promising players. My biggest concerns are the youth at offensive and defensive lines. Dial, Carradine, the two Martins, Loony, and the backup QB's. If these guys manage to step up big time then we have a good shot at the super bowl. But if these guys come out average, we might not even make the playoffs.

That was a super bowl team and coach just a year away, so they aren't practicing against the Browns, that's for sure. I can see this happening again next year because each team is so similar to each other. I think it's really helpful for our defense to go against a veteran QB like Flacco, and they benefit going against a mobile QB like Colin.

The injuries have me bummed but it forces Baalke to keep looking for more talent, and helps Jim and his assistant coaches find out whether the *next man up* is a champ or a chump.

f**king Vance.

Berman, "All he does is catch Touchdowns...and drop passes."

But he has long arms...isn't that the reason for drafting this guy...

He replaced a guy who couldnt catch either.

Yeah but that guy was a mismatch nightmare for D...and he could play ST...this guys hasn't shown he is deserving of a 2 round pick....

..... yet.

Looks like we had a good day on both Offense and Defenses:

http://www.49ers.com/news/article-2/Observations-from-Day-2-of-49ers-Ravens-Camp/2140961d-996a-4860-a566-4f8e19871ff1?cid=social_20140810_29482226
I like what I'm hearing on Dontae Johnson. That kid can track the football. Baalke may have found us a starter if he doesn't re-sign Culliver.
DeUH....

thanks for all your posts, great job, great info, always easy to go through....
