Tramaine Brock (#1)
Chris Culliver (#2)
Jimmie Ward (#3 Nickle/Dime/Slot/FS)
Perrish Cox (#4 Nickle/Dime/ST)(Backs up Brock)
Chris Cook (#5 Nickle/Dime)(Backs up Culliver)
Darryl Morris (#1 Slot/ST)
Dontae Johnson (Backs up both Brock/Culliver)

Rationale: Eric Wright retiring hurts the depth/experience here but he was barely being mentioned anyhow. The good news is we're getting younger, faster, taller, more athletic and certainly more aggressive/physical. We carried 10 DB's in the NFCCG. Here, we carry 11 total d/t the growth of Johnson and Baalke learning from letting Cooper go last year to the Chiefs. Baalke/Donatell/Fangio appear to want to play much more press with a single-high safety (Reid) and keep Bethea in and around the box in run support. We can expect both press and off-coverage with Brock and Culliver while being backed up by Cook and Johnson (best in press right now). Morris pushes Ward hard for the slot-role but also stays on as a ST gunner ace. Cox makes the team as a slot and outside CB and as our #2 returner on kick offs next to James/Ellington.

S (4)
Eric Reid
Antoine Bethea
CJ Spillman
Raymond Ventrone

Rationale: No surprises here. The outside shot here is L.J. McCray or D.J. Campbell d/t their P/KR abilities. McCray can also play the nickle ala Ward. He has the license to beat out either Spillman or Ventrone who are top-notch ST (only) players. Dahl should be cut as he's a solid ST player and below-average backup S and counts $1,283,333 against the cap.

Not that it matters but Cully with be the LCB and Brock will be the RCB so technically it's Cully 1 Brock 2
2 seasons ago our DL rotation was pathetic and it showed when Justin went down.

Now our DL is deep w/quality.

Trent seems to have done the same thing with the secondary.

Backup safety is a concern, especially given Reid's concussions last year.

Backup safety is a concern, especially given Reid's concussions last year.

And especially if Ward ends up as our go-to slot cover guy.
Thanks Shorteous!

I agree. I'm hoping L.J. McCray wins the backup job or even D.J. Campbell. Fangio seemed to like McCray PLUS he is the most productive of all the rookies at kick returns (yet, he hasn't been given a shot yet). That's his best bet...to add to ST (even on coverage units) AND at the backup S. He adds REAL safety skills beyond Spillman and Ventrone. That said, Ward is also learning S as well and if he had to play there, I feel very comfortable with either Cox or Morris sliding into the slot.

and we're pretty much deep all around... I even feel more comfortable with Gabby instead of Colt at QB

It seems JH's work w/Gabert is paying off from what's written.

Day 7 Recap

1. Colin Kaepernick

@caminman Colin Kaepernick had one of his best performances, starting with a red-zone drill that quickly led to a touchdown. He also was in sync with Anquan Boldin on a number of plays and back-shoulder passes.

@chrisbiderman Kaepernick had a good day. He found Patton for a long TD in a 2-minute drill.

@ChrisBiderman Unofficially, Colin Kaepernick was 21-28 in 7-on-7s and full-team drills. He completed 8 passes to Vance McDonald and 6 to Quinton Patton.

@mattmaiocco Kaepernick had a very good day, as he completed 14 of 17 pass attempts during 11-on-11 drills. Quinton Patton got cornerback Perrish Cox to bite on a double-move, and Kaepernick lofted a perfect 20-yard touchdown pass.

@chrisbiderman Kaepernick was a perfect 4-4 on the drive, which included passes to McDonald and a slant route to Anquan Boldin for a big gain up the middle where it appeared Michael Wilhoite and Nick Moody got mixed up in their coverage assignments.

2. Carlos Hyde

@grantcohn Carlos Hyde. Whiffed in blitz pickup during 11 on 11s. Chris Borland blitzed up the middle and Hyde hardly touched him. Hyde also dropped a check-down pass from Kaepernick. In Hyde's defense, the pass was bullet and it was over his head.

3. Michael Crabtree

@BWilliamsonESPN #49ers Roman said Crabtree is fine just working through something. He didn't practice Thursday and left early Wed.

4. Anquan Boldin

@grantcohn Anquan Boldin. Made seven catches. He beat Daryl Morris twice, once deep down the left sideline. Boldin also beat Jimmie Ward twice from the slot

@mattbarrows Anquan Boldin made several big catches during 11-on-11 and team drills. No Michael Crabtree, no Brandon Lloyd and Boldin making a lot of plays? What is this, 2013?

5. Stevie Johnson

@taylorprice49 Stevie Johnson hauled in a 30-yard deep ball from Gabbert. The best part of the pass connection between first-year 49ers was Johnson quickly toe-tapping both feet before crashing to the ground.

@grantcohn Stevie Johnson. Made one catch – a beautiful 25-yard catch near the right sideline. He tapped both feet in bounds while he fell to the ground. He also dropped a pass.

@caminman Offensive play of the day: Stevie Johnson has had a relatively quiet camp, though no one's said anything negative about him. He's the quickest wideout of their upper-echelon group. He's also pretty dang good, as he showed in a 7-on-7 session, when he caught a 30-yard pass from Blaine Gabbert while falling backward on the right sideline.

6. Quinton Patton

@ChrisBiderman The touchdown to Patton was on a double-move along the right side line. Looked eerily similar to that one play in Seattle that didn't work.

@grantcohn Made seven catches. One was a touchdown catch during a red zone drill. He lined up across from Perrish Cox, who intercepted Kaepernick twice yesterday. Patton used a double move and Cox bit on the first one. Patton broke deep and he was wide open. Kaepernick hit him for an easy touchdown.

@chrisbiderman Another notable play came early in the day during a two-minute drill when Kaepernick found second-year wideout Quinton Patton for a touchdown along the right sideline.

7. Bruce Ellington

@grantcohn Bruce Ellington. Made a beautiful catch during a third-down drill. It was third and four. Josh Johnson took the snap, rolled out of the pocket to his right and threw to Ellington, who was running the same direction. Johnson led Ellington a bit too far, but Ellington reached out, caught the ball with his fingertips and picked up the first down.

@mattbarrows Ellington made an impressive running catch on a pass from Johnson. He's back practicing full time and is running most of his patterns from the slot position.

8. Chuck Jacobs

@taylorprice49 Chuck Jacobs caught several sideline passes in team work. Cox, however, broke up a Josh Johnson deep ball intended for Jacobs down the right sideline later in practice.

9. Vance McDonald

@TaylorPrice49 Second-year pros @VMcDonald89 caught a lot of balls today

@grantcohn Vance McDonald. Made nine catches. Vernon Davis seemed to get the day off — he didn't participate in team drills — so Vance McDonald got more targets than usual and, as a result, had his best practice of training camp. But he still dropped four passes.

@chrisbiderman McDonald finished the afternoon practice on the receiving end of eight balls (unofficially) from Colin Kaepernick during 7-on-7 and full-team drills to lead the team.

@caminman Tight end Vance McDonald had a couple drops before reaching out to grab a Kaepernick pass. Roman said they're wanting McDonald to turn around earlier to spot the ball faster

@mattmaiocco Tight end Vance McDonald made an extraordinary reception on a seam route late in Thursday's non-padded practice.

10. Asante Cleveland

@mattbarrows Undrafted rookie Asante Cleveland had a busy day. He made several nice catches, including one in the back of the end zone from McLeod Bethel-Thompson.

@taylorprice49 Undrafted tight ends Asante Cleveland and Kevin Greene both caught their first touchdown passes of training camp. Greene caught a short pass from McLeod Bethel-Thompson in a team red zone period. Cleveland caught a 20-yard high ball from Bethel-Thompson in a red zone 7-on-7 period.

11. Corey Lemonier

@caminman Corey Lemonier stripped Gabbert in the pocket on an outside pass rush.

12. Patrick Willis

@mattbarrows Patrick Willis poked the ball from fullback Will Tukuafu after a short catch-and-run play in the flat.

@grantcohn Patrick Willis. Forced a fumble. Will Tukuafu caught a pass over the middle, turned and took two steps upfield when Willis punched the ball out of his hands.

@caminman Patrick Willis was really active in practice, forcing a fumble on Will Tukuafu's reception and combining with Michael Wilhoite to break up a pass.

13. Michael Wilhoite

@grantcohn Michael Wilhoite. Punched a ball out of Quinton Patton's hands during a red zone drill. Patton hadn't taken a step with the ball yet, so it was an incomplete pass, not a fumble.

14. Chris Borland

@grantcohn Chris Borland. Slapped a pass out of Vance McDonald's hands. Borland also "sacked" Colin Kaepernick during an 11-on-11 drill. Borland blitzed up the middle, spun past Carlos Hyde and tagged Kaepernick

@mattmaiocco Rookie linebacker Chris Borland broke up a pass intended for McDonald, and two players later broke through for a would-be sack of Kaepernick.

15. ILB Depth

@mattbarrows Up until this point, Nick Moody had been playing the "Jack" linebacker spot with the second-team defense while Chris Borland has manned the "Mike" spot. Shayne Skov and Blake Costanzo have been the inside linebackers with the third-team unit. Today, however, Skov, not Moody, was next to Borland with the second-string defense. It was hard to tell if Moody was hurt or not. He played some but seemed to be clutching at his hamstring after a play late in practice.

16. Chris Culliver

@taylorprice49 Chris Culliver returned to practice. Culliver and Cox were the starting cornerbacks

@chrisbiderman Cornerback Chris Culliver was also back in action after leaving practice early Sunday and missing Tuesday and Wednesday. He worked primarily with the first team at right cornerback.

17. Perrish Cox

@caminman Defensive play of the day: For the second straight day, let's give it to Perrish Cox. He soared to knock down a 40-yard pass from Josh Johnson to Chuck Jacobs.

@mattbarrows Cox has looked very good in training camp so far, and the only question is whether he's the No. 3 or No. 4 option at cornerback. Because starting cornerbacks Tramaine Brock and Chris Culliver suffered nearly simultaneous injuries, it's been hard to tell. After all, Cox and Chris Cook had been their replacements with the first-string defense over the last two practices.Today Culliver was back in the starting lineup at right cornerback while Cox was his counterpart on the left side.

18. Dontae Johnson

@grantcohn Dontae Johnson. Gave up no catches. Was tested once and he broke up the pass.

19. Jimmier Ward

@taylorprice49 Jimmie Ward was flagged for pass interference on a deep Kaepernick pass to Anquan Boldin. The veteran receiver still caught the 20-yard go route with the rookie draped on his back. Ward broke up a Gabbert pass intended for David Reed on the very next play.

@mattbarrows Jimmie Ward, who always seems to be around the ball, nearly turned in the training camp's top moment when he dove for a tipped pass amid a pile of players on the sideline. It was close but no cigar for the rookie.

20. Special Teams

@taylorprice49 The final special teams period saw rookie receiver Bruce Ellington and veteran wideout Devon Wylie handling the punt duties.

@mattmaiocco After muffing his first punt return of the day, rookie Bruce Ellington negotiated the wind to handle two other blasts from All-Pro punter Andy Lee.

@mattbarrows Ellington and Devon Wyle handled punt-return duties late in practice. Ellington flubbed the first attempt but was good on his next three. Wylie didn't have any mistakes despite a steady northerly breeze.

21. Health Watch

@mattmaiocco Wide receivers Michael Crabtree and Brandon Lloyd sat out practice with minor injuries, Roman said.

@mattbarrows Demarcus Dobbs is dealing with a personal matter and is expected back at practice Friday. #49ers

@mattbarrows No Michael Crabtree or Brandon Lloyd at today's practice. But Jon Baldwin was back.

@ChrisBiderman No Crabtree or Lloyd at practice today. Culliver returned to action. Marcus Martin and Aaron Lynch participated in individual drills.

@ChrisBiderman Aldon Smith was back.

@caminman Center Marcus Martin (ankle) and outside linebacker Aaron Lynch (hamstring) look almost ready to practice for the first time in camp

@caminman Crabtree didn't finish practice Wednesday, nor did Brandon Lloyd, who sat out Thursday's session but did emerge to watch its final 30 minutes or so.

@chrisbiderman The list of other vets that sat out Thursday includes Justin Smith (shoulder), Ray McDonald (unspecified leg injury), Anthony Davis (shoulder), Tramaine Brock (unspecified leg injury), Michael Crabtree ("working through something") and Brandon Lloyd (ditto).
