Day 6 Recap
1. Colin Kaepernick
@taylorprice49 Kaepernick closed out the day with a pair of red-zone touchdown passes to David Reed and Chuck Jacobs
2. Blaine Gabbert
@taylorprice49 Offensive Play of the Day Backup quarterback Blaine Gabbert led the second-team offense down the field to set up a field goal attempt in his two-minute drive scenario. Gabbert was 4-of-4 on the drive, including a 20-yard strike to Devon Wylie to put the offense in position for a field goal attempt.Gabbert's decision-making and execution was on point. The quick throw to Wylie continues to underscore his knowledge of a new offense.
3. Michael Crabtree
@Eric_Branch #49ers Michael Crabtree left practice early. If he was injured, it didn't appear serious.
4. Stevie Johnson
@grantcohn Caught a two-yard touchdown pass in front of Jimmie Ward. But Johnson dropped three passes, four if you count the one Morris poked out of Johnson's hands.
5. David Reed
@mattmaiocco Wide receiver David Reed, a five-year veteran, had a very good day five catches during team period.
@mattbarrows I've resisted writing about receiver Davis Reed (6-0, 190) because there are so many other bigger-name receivers on the squad. But he has been consistently productive over the last few practices, including today's.
@caminman Offensive play of the day: David Reed, a fifth-year player and roster underdog, made several impressive catches, including one on a deep ball by Gabbert in one-on-one drills.
6. Carlos Hyde
@ChrisBiderman More times than not Jim Harbaugh praised Carlos Hyde (loudly) after his touches.
7. Tank Carradine
@taylorprice49Tank Carradine lined up as the right defensive tackle with the first defense.
@mattbarrows Tank made of iron
@mattbarrows Carradine was the starting right defensive end in place of Justin Smith (shoulder).
@mattbarrows I'm not sure if it's possible to pancake guard Mike Iupati. But Tank Carradine came awfully close during one-on-one pass-rush drills when he forced the big left guard backward several steps. Everyone who is asked about Carradine invariably talks about his strength, and that's been evident in this drill.
@grantcohn Mike Iupati and Adam Snyder had trouble just getting their hands on Carradine during one on one blocking drills. They'd reach out to punch his chest and he would slap their hands away and run right past them
8. Quinton Dial
@mattmaioccoDefensive lineman Quinton Dial continues to show a great blend of quickness and strength during one-on-one and team drills.
@mattbarrows The other lineman who continually stands out is Quinton Dial. Today's was the fourth straight padded practice, and you could tell that tempers were starting to fray a bit. It seems that Dial is involved whenever there's some harsh words exchanged
@camninman Offensive tackle Jonathan Martin and defensive tackle Quinton Dial appeared to exchange heated words after a one-on-one pass blocking drill. Nothing escalated the next time Martin blocked Dial.
9. Tony Jerrod-Eddie
@mattbarrows Tony Jerod-Eddie was the starting left defensive end in place of Ray McDonald (leg).
10. Lawrence Okoye
@caminman Lawrence Okoye's crash-course in football is an ongoing process. Joe Staley helped him out with some hand techniques after Staley didn't like what he saw in their team-drills matchup.
11. Dan Skuta
@ChrisBiderman No Aldon Smith today meant Dan Skuta getting most of the work with the first team.
12. Corey Lemonier
@ChrisBiderman Corey Lemonier was primarily with the second unit.
@mattmaiocco Corey Lemonier, Ahmad Brooks, Chris Borland had would-be sacks during team work.
13. Patrick Willis
@mattmaiocco Linebacker Patrick Willis intercepted a pass from McLeod Bethel-Thompson in 7-on-7.
@taylorprice49 Patrick Willis intercepted Bethel-Thompson in the opening 11-on-11 period. The quarterback known as "Mac" had his over-the-middle pass tipped initially by cornerback Chris Cook and into Willis' arms for his first interception of camp.
14. Perrish Cox
@ChrisBiderman Perrish Cox, working with the starters at LCB, intercepted Colin Kaepernick twice today.
@TaylorPrice49 P-Cox picked off Kap twice, second time ended 2-minute drive.
@mattmaiocco Cox was solid in coverage, and made interceptions of two Colin Kaepernick passes during 11-on-11 drills.
@taylorprice49 Cox intercepted Colin Kaepernick twice in team drills. On the first play of what appeared to be an 11-on-11 run period, the 49ers quarterback sold a play-action run fake and tried to launch a deep ball 40 yards downfield to Anquan Boldin, who got open behind the starting defense. Kaepernick's pass, however, hung in the air just long enough for Cox to make a leaping interception.Cox's second takeaway wasn't as visually impressive, but it did take place in a clutch situation. Cox put a stop to the first-team offense's two-minute drive when he dove for a low comeback pass intended for Quinton Patton
@grantcohn Intercepted Colin Kaepernick twice during team drills. First, Kaepernick under threw a deep pass to Anquan Boldin and Cox picked it off. Next, Kaepernick stared down Quinton Patton during a two-minute drill. Cox broke early, dove and made the interception.
15. Darryl Morris
@taylorPrice49 DBs looked solid, especially Darryl Morris
@mattmaiocco Morris broke up four passes throughout the day on plays in which he was assigned to defend Michael Crabtree, Brandon Lloyd, Stevie Johnson and Anquan Boldin, respectively.
@taylorprice49 Morris lined up as right cornerback with the second-team defense and moved inside to be the second-team slot corner role in nickel pass situations. But before Morris could get into passing lanes in 7-on-7 and team drills, the second-year cornerback made his presence known in 1-on-1 drills against San Francisco's wide receivers. Morris broke up a Kaepernick pass intended for Michael Crabtree on an out pattern in the competitive period.
@taylorprice49 Defensive Play of the Day In a 7-on-7 drill from the 30-yard line, Morris broke up back-to-back passes. The second pass breakup saw Morris perfectly time a swipe into the arms of wide receiver Stevie Johnson, who almost caught a short slant pass from Kaepernick. The bang-bang play was a great example of Morris' closing speed paying off.
@grantcohn Darryl Morris. Started off practice by beating Michael Crabrtee in a one-on-one drill. Crabtree tried to beat Morris with a move to the outside, but Crabrtee couldn't shake him and Morris knocked away the pass. In team drills, he broke up two passes — one intended for Stevie Johnson, and one intended for Anquan Boldin. Morris also recorded two sacks when he blitzed from the slot. Morris was the best cornerback on the field today
16. Dontae Johnson
@taylorprice49 Rookie cornerback Dontae Johnson picked off Kaepernick in the opening 1-on-1 drill. Johnson beat fellow rookie Bruce Ellington to the top of his flag route. Johnson also broke up a Gabbert pass intended for Boldin on a deep dig route in 7-on-7 work.
@mattbarrows Johnson made a nice play when he swatted a ball away from Boldin (not an easy task; just ask Carlos Rogers) after what looked like an apparent reception.
@grantcohn Broke up a pass intended for Boldin during team drills. Boldin caught the ball but Johnson immediately slapped it out of Boldin's hands. During one on ones, Johnson intercepted a deep pass intended for Bruce Ellington.
17. Jimmie Ward
@taylorprice49 First-round draft pick Jimmie Ward broke up a pass from Kaepernick to Lloyd in the 1-on-1 period. He also broke up a McLeod Bethel Thompson pass in 7-on-7 work
@mattbarrowsWard knocked a ball from Brandon Lloyd during one-on-one drills. Then he knocked away -- and nearly intercepted -- a quick pass to Devon Wylie from McLeod Bethel-Thompson. He also outraced Blaine Gabbert to the corner on a quarterback keeper. The early reviews on Ward, obviously, continue to be very promising.
18. Health Watch
@taylorprice49Rookie linebacker Aaron Lynch and rookie center Marcus Martin were activated off the Physically Unable to Perform List and Non-Football Injury (NFI) Lists on Sunday, but both players did not dress for practice.
@taylorprice49Defensive tackle Justin Smith (shoulder) and offensive tackle Anthony Davis (shoulder) did not practice. Ray McDonald (leg) did not practice as well.
@mattmaioccoJustin Smith, Ray McDonald and Justin Smith sat out practice. The starting defensive line consisted if right end Tank Carradine, nose tackle Glenn Dorsey and left end Tony Jerod-Eddie.
@mattmaioccoG Fou Fonoti was placed on injured reserve.
@ChrisBiderman No Brock or Culliver for the second straight day. Demarcus Dobbs also sat out.
