CB situation

I wanted Marcus peters....even if we had the tenth pick. I remember a few years ago I wanted the cb on the ravens that just got extended (smith I think). They remind me of the same type of player and both I feel are going to be good. It was the better pick IMO and we also need a 2nd cb that could be great

I've had the feeling Baalke has a formula for where to pick various positions and CBs are too expensive down the road for high #1s. Just as they become an important part of the D they reach their second contract and become unaffordable. Armstead will never be that expensive unless he becomes JJ Watt...which might be OK! The niners D has been great without a high priced CB, which bears my theory out...somewhat.
Seems the key positions he will spend money on are QB and pass rushers. Whatever his method, he has been very good at finding defensive fits for the D and I hope it continues!

Which pass rushers has he spent money on? And to that point, when Kap signed his deal he got a ton of crap for how team-friendly it was, so it's not like that was really a big money deal either.
If anything I think that during his tenure as GM Baalke has been unwilling to pay top dollar for any position.

They're playing 'money ball.'

Aldon Smith was a high draft pick and would be priced off the team if he weren't such a dunderhead! LOL! He and JJ Watt may be close in talent but AS can't be depended on to play every game. If he straightens out he will be very pricey!
Kaepernick's deal was smart for the team and smart for the player. What it lacks in pazazz it makes up for in solid numbers. If he plays well he will be extremely well paid, if he plays so so...he will be paid well. If he is cut...
I agree that Baalke doesn't pay top dollar for any position, but that only confirms my point that he has a system to find and use players without over paying for the glamour positions. T Smith is his most expensive FA acquisition and WR is the third highly paid position with CB and QB.
He does not rent top dollar players...like the CB who plays for the Jets...er...Bucs...hmm...NE...ah...Jets...

^^^ A Good GM would never put himself in position to have to pay top dollars for any position.
The closest has been Torrey Smith

I really wanted Trae Waynes, or Marcus Peters, but when Minnesota took Waynes, I though we had DeVante Parker, then Miami took him, and we traded down.
Loved Peters, despite his issues with coaches at UW.

You know, Baalke noted that CB was a target but the board didn't fall that way...this may be WHERE you were talking about.

Wonder how much all the character issues have played in the draft the past two years? Seems like Baalke has taken many really good leader types--Reid, Harold, Tartt, Ward...some quiet but still leaders by action.

I thought the same...character (gold stars) have jumped even higher up his priority list; so much so that every player and coach seems to talk about the "off the field" emphasis (and that's a good thing).

Baalke spent a lot of aldon smith with his option and will most likely pay him 12 mil or more a year if he does well this year.
Brooks is probably averaging 7 mil or so a year
Bowman and Willis were about 9-10 mil a year so baalke has paid top dollar for lbs but that's about it.
He spent decent money of Anthony Davis and staley but was so smart he locked them up a year or two before they would get a lot more money.

yea i don't get the whole not willing to pay top dollar thing. he's smart enough to extend and lock people up just before they explode into prime time players. if you're good and they see the value in you, you get an extension during the season. if you don't get an extension during the season you're more than likely gone. kap is the exception but the 1st opportunity to get him extended right after the year was up..he got it.
