I do think we have to look at options, but I hope the staff gives the youngsters on the team a chance in the return game.

Yup I'm all for Ellington or Morris taking over the return duties.
well they better bust their butts on this non stop starting today. the team may sign a scrub running back just to help them get through pre season . there is no james or hunter, gore will get about four carries and that leaves two guys. i am counting on nothing from lattimore till i see him actually in pads practicing. if the season began tomorrow, cox would be our return man till james gets back and while not the best thing,, it is far from tragic. we should get be used to james missing pre season by now

Can you imagine Morris with his speed and ability to get up to top-end speed in just a few quick-burst steps? That's Ginn-like speed back there. And Ellington isn't exactly slow either...looks like they are trying Patton. Cox, IIRC, had some returns back in the day too. Excited to see if we give the two experienced rookies in McCray/Campbell a shot. Wylie has some ability as well!

James McCray was an excellent kick returner in college; he should get a shot.

Yeah I don't much about him....let's give them all a shot! I'm guessing they will sign some other RB for preseason for sure.

would it kill the 9ers to draft a return specialist? WOULD IT!?

Seriously especially with 12 draft picks this past draft

I'm starting to think it would. Even when we have some potential, do they get a realistic shot to earn a spot? ST returning has KILLED us 3 years in a row now. Helllooooo!?

On punt returns: Perrish Cox, Bruce Ellington, Devon Wylie and Quinton Patton.

On kick returns: Cox, Ellington, Wylie and Carlos Hyde.

LaMichael James was riding a stationary bike as practice began because of a dislocated elbow (which originally was thought to be his left one but now looks like it was his right).

This was Ellington's debut and those are roles I can totally see him fulfill, though Cox sure looks most comfortable on punt returns. Hyde is a likely kickoff returner, but please don't expose him to injury in the exhibitions at that job.

Fourth-round draft pick Ellington (ankle) returned to practice.

As expected, he joined Wylie, Cox and Patton in returning punts. The team's top return man, LaMichael James, will miss a month with an elbow injury.

Sure seems odd using Hyde and not giving guys like McCray and Campbell shots...yet. Given how well Lloyd has played it's no surprise they are trying out both Ellington and Patton.

I think that Hyde will be a up man on kick offs. So, if the kick off is short, he will have some experience handling kick offs.

I think, but I am not sure.

I'm all in on this one.

I wonder if they have even given the guy a chance in practice to see how he does.

sure am glad we have cox. never figured out why we cut him in the first place last year. if james is not ready i am ok with cox doing the job. he may not have big run backs for scores but I am pretty sure he can catch the ball and i will not have a heart attack everytime he gets ready to catch it like i do with james. who knows,, maybe our new back smith will blow things up the pre season making james expendable. odder things have taken place

I like it.... Cox and A. Smith (if he impressess, might earn a spot, then LMJ might be outside looking in before the cuts).

Cox, Morris, Ellington, Patton, one of the rooks / newcomers... we got a lot of good options there.

and you would certainly like to think that the more reps they get in practice the better they will be. i am hoping ellington is better next week than he is now and so on
