Move Justin Smith or Ray McDonald to NT?

I've been thinking about this.. just hear me out. We move one of them to NT. They would be an upgrade over Dorsey or Williams. And it would allow Tank to get on the field in our base package. If Tank really ends up being the monster we are all hoping he is we will want him on the field as much as possible. It's all about getting the best 11 on the field right?

Justin 2 years ago maybe, but right now neither have the size / strength to play NT. Plus, I'd rather have both those guys setting the edge anyway. Put Williams or Dorsey in the middle to fill the gap and push the pocket. It would put too much strain on Smith or McDonald, IMO.

Justin Smith and Ray Mac were lackluster last year. I don't know if they are just getting older or if they were hurt. But either way they are passed their prime.

Convert Justin Smith to safety. Problem solved.

I am not sure that McDonald would indeed to an upgrade at NT over either Dorsey or Williams. And I don't want to see Smith on the field all the time. Like Gore I want to see him used carefully and to stay at or near his best all season.

Justin actually said once he's too slow or too big to play DE it's time to retire, he doesn't want to be a NT. And besides, all this JS wasn't good last year stuff is BS. Maybe it wasn't his best season but the guy is a beast. Aside from that, Dorsey was very good at NT and Williams beat him out b4 getting hurt & we have Dial, we're fine on the DL with the guys we have playing the positions they are playing. It will be interesting to see Tank get in the mix this year, I actually think he could end up taking Ray Mac's starting spot.

Are you looking at your own video review or some PFF metric or something to back this up? Are they past their prime? Sure, they both have plenty of mileage, but we were #5 in total defense and #4 in rushing defense in 2013. I haven't noticed much drop off from our front seven. Certainly nothing to feel a move like this is necessary. If Tank is better than Cowboy or RayMac, Tomsula will get him on the field.

Just move both to safety and be done with it.

Maybe in passing situations but my initial feeling is they're too small to play nose. Most think we're losing Aldon for part of the season anyways, so Tank will probably see plenty of action next to Justin, hopefully they develop a similar chemistry.
