I think he is the 3rd right now IMO. Gabbbert is #2 by default because of his guaranteed contract, this also could be a ploy by the FO to get Gabbert to redo his deal, and have little guaranteed money left. Similar to Colt McCoy/Seneca Wallace in 2013.
I think JJ is a better QB, I just want to see him and Gabbert get same reps with the same 2nd stringers, or 1st stringers when they get the PT in preseason.

It's really weird.
Seriously. Our backup QB has got to be the most volatile position in the entire league since Harbaugh got here. Guess you gotta plow through a bunch of em til you find the right guy though.

But we're plowing through the SAME guys.

Matt Maiocco @MaioccoCSN
By my count, 49ers have had 12 different QBs under contract since 2011, but only three have attempted passes in the regular season.

A very schizophrenic process.

Well Gabbert and Kory are new guys. Maybe McBLT and JJ are the benchmarks to measure the new guys??

NC is right, I feel one helluva lot better with Josh Johnson. It didn't make sense. What, kap gets a 4 week injury (hammy, high ankle) and we have gabbert? I don't think so. I noted AB thinks gabbert is #2, but who knows this O? Who has played for JH. We NEEDed a guy who could step in right away and anyone thinking that was gabbert is mistaken, IMO. Gabbert is exactly what he is observed to be. A Project. Hell, maybe even a good one. My thots of Matt Flynn, Kassel were just way too expensive. But we still needed a guy who could step in right away to keep us from losing a quick 4 games in a row. And that is what I think gabbert brings. His luck has been bad , his play awful. I believe he can become very serviceable...just NOT now. And if he goes in before Josh in an emergency, I don't think we do well. Josh is perfect. He isn't great but can be serviceable right away. I just don't believe Gabbert is there at this time.
So, we finally got our kap insurance policy and I am delighted. Guys, GAbbert just wasn't going to come in and win a game against a non elite team. I truly think Josh can. GAberett will ultimately be there, but his acquisition tells you, both JH and trent must have felt the same way. Again, I don't expect josh to come in and beat an elite team, but I sure think he can help us win against non elites. Problem is our entire conference is going to be balz tot he walls this yr. Still we have some gimme games and josh can win those. GAbbert...I wouldn't bet on it, and bringing josh in confirms that to me , at least.
Look, a season ender for kap and yeah, we are screwed. But for a 3-4 week absence, we can make it thru that with josh. Gabbert is just too big a leap of faith to come in and win the gimmes. So, I am officially now very happy with draft, FA and UDFA, no matter what else happens from here. And I like our two contestants for C but believe the newcomer wins it. Competition will decide. kap needs to be proctected, and hopefully, new guys give us big improvement over Goodwin and Snyder, and I don't even see Snyder on the squad.
So good job JH, great job trent. You saw what many others of us saw also...inadequate short term replacement...now fixed. Hu-rah!

Agree with this. They missed out on Pryor to put pressure on Gabbert so now they have Johnson & they can get him to reduce that $2 million down to a reasonable amount. If he plays well so be it, if not they can cut his a$$!

Sus if you really want to see a nightmare, go look at any of gabbert's recent tapes. Ouch. Prospect yes. Long term however, and not serviceable in the near future.
