I think you guys are giving Josh Johnson a little bit too much cred, but that's me.

Anyway, I see offense and defense broken down into two groups on each side when it comes to deciding ultimate value to the roster. On offense I have it broken down into (1) the base group of the six players that are always on the field (O-line and QB's) and (2) the personnel package group that includes everybody else. On defense I break it down between the front seven and the DB's.
The Red-Line is the cut line. Right now I'm showing 24 on offense and 26 on defense, but that's flexible..
Based on this I come up with the following roster, which already alters the cut line. I'm going with 10 DB's and 16 on the front seven.
Offense (24)
QB (2): Colin Kaepernick / Blaine Gabbert
RB (5): Frank Gore / Bruce Miller / Kendall Hunter / Carlos Hyde (R) / Marcus Lattimore
WR (6): Michael Crabtree / Anquan Boldin / Stevie Johnson / Quinton Patton / Bruce Ellington (R) / Kasim Osgood
TE (3): Vernon Davis / Vance McDonald / Garrett Celek
OL (8): Joe Staley / Mike Iupati / Marcus Martin (R) / Alex Boone / Anthony Davis / Jonathan Martin / Daniel Kilgore / Joe Looney
Defense (26)
DL (7): Justin Smith / Ray McDonald / Glenn Dorsey / Tank Carradine / Ian Williams / Quintin Dial / Tony Jerod-Eddie
LB (9): Patrick Willis / Ahmad Brooks / Aldon Smith / Corey Lemonier / Dan Skuta / Chris Borland (R) / Michael Wilhoite / Nick Moody / Aaron Lynch (R)
DB (10): Eric Reid / Antone Bethea / Chris Culliver / Tramaine Brock / Jimme Ward (R) / C.J. Spillman / Chris Cook / Donate Johnson (R) / Bubba Ventrone / Darryl Morris
Specialists (3)
LS Kevin McDemott
PK Phil Dawson
P Andy Lee
Inactives (7)
M. Lattimore - He's on the bubble and projected as inactive until we know he's 100%
J. Looney
A. Lynch
D. Johnson
Dial or TJE
??
??
Practice Squad
Cory Faulkner - QB
Luke Marquardt - OT
Derek Carrier - TE
Lawrence Okoye - DE
Kenneth Acker - CB
L.J. McCray - DB
Morgan Breslin - OLB
Shane Skov - ILB
I don't think Aaron lynch makes the squad and I am unsure if moody beats out Wilhoite. The projection is awesome. The only differences I would pick is hunter not making it on offense and either moody or lynch not making it and Wilhoite making the squad. With hunter not making it, this would open the door for a lineman type to make the squad for the jumbo packages harbaugh likes to run. BTW, I think TJE is the third best DE on this squad at this point. Until I see Dial or Tank actually play in the NFL and perform, they take a back seat to TJE who played very well last year.

This is what I want the roster to look like, meaning these players impressed. In reality though I think Lloyd and Baldwin get cut, and Okoye is either on the practice squad again or let go entirely.
QB (3) Kap, Gabbert, Johnson
RB(4) Gore, Hunter, Lattimore, Hyde
FB (1) Miller
WR (7) Crabs, Boldin, S Johnson, Lloyd, Ellington, Patton, Baldwin
TE (3) Davis, Mcdonald, Celek
OL (8) Staley, Iupati, Kilgore, Boone, A Davis, J Martin, M Martin, Looney
(26 offense)
DL (7) J Smith, Ian Williams, Dorsey, Mcdonald, Carradine, A Lynch,Okoye
LB (8) Willis, A Smith, Brooks, Borland, Wilhoite, Lemonier, Skuta, Moody
DB (9) Culliver, Brock, Wright, Ward, D Johnson, Cook, Reid, Bethea, Spillman
(24 defense)
STs (3)- Lee, Dawson, Mcdemott
Pup/IR-Bowman, Reaser
QB (3) Kap, Gabbert, Johnson
RB(4) Gore, Hunter, Lattimore, Hyde
FB (1) Miller
WR (7) Crabs, Boldin, S Johnson, Lloyd, Ellington, Patton, Baldwin
TE (3) Davis, Mcdonald, Celek
OL (8) Staley, Iupati, Kilgore, Boone, A Davis, J Martin, M Martin, Looney

I'm not sure of most of this myself. Just preliminary impressions. The depth within the bubble players will likely flip-flop a few times between now and Labor day.

Not one ST Ace? Not liking it. Osgood and Ventrone are among the best 53 on the roster. Baldwin is garbage, as is Lloyd. They wouldn't play. Lloyd brings no ST Value, unlike Osgood, who brings all ST Value. And Lynch is a OLB, not a DE. Okoye is too raw, he won't bear out Jerod-Eddie or Dial.

QB: Kap, Gabbert. I don't think there is much chance of us keeping 3 QBs on the 53 man roster.
RB: Gore, Hunter, Hyde, Lattimore
FB: Miller
WR: Crabs, Boldin, Stevie, Patton, Ellington, Osgood
TE: Davis, Mcdonald, Carrier
OL: Staley, Iupati, Kilgore, Boone, Davis, Martin, Martin, Looney(or Marquadt?)
(24)
DL: Smith, Williams, Dorsey, Mcdonald, Tank, Dial, TJE
LB: Aldon, Willis, Brooks, Borland, Lemonier, Skuta, Lynch, Moody, Wilhoite
DB: Culliver, Brock, Ward, Bethea, Reid, Johnson, Spillman, Ventrone, Morris, Wright
(26)
ST: Lee, Dawson, McDermott
RB: Gore, Hunter, Hyde, Lattimore
FB: Miller
WR: Crabs, Boldin, Stevie, Patton, Ellington, Osgood
TE: Davis, Mcdonald, Carrier
OL: Staley, Iupati, Kilgore, Boone, Davis, Martin, Martin, Looney(or Marquadt?)

Probably by far the best projected 53 man roster on the Zone. I think Skov could bump Moody off the roster.
I love Marquardt, not sure they would go with no backup Guard on the 53 man, I know Kilgore and Martin's can play Guard, but Looney is a natural Guard. Martin(Jonathan) is a Tackle natural. But I wouldn't hate it.
Hoping Gabbert proves something, could care less about losing a 6th for him, it's the guaranteed money that I hate.

Could end up being a glorified camp arm.

However, because I think we carry 3 QB's, I think Johnson is here, also, to compete for the #3 job with Faulkner (a guy I'm high on and thought he'd get drafted) and Bethel-Thompson. But I think Faulkner will beat out both.
Could end up being a glorified camp arm.

I agree. That's probably a good idea to free a up two spots by keeping two quarterbacks and only one fullback. Hyde can play fullback in a pinch.

I agree that 2 QBs saves a spot. I think the other spot that might be in jeopardy would be the third TE. I'd be tempted to keep another OL on the roster, unless Celek or Carrier really shines.

I don't know about you guys, but with Blake added, this 53 is even more brutal to figure out. I won't even attempt the 46.
