2014 Team Needs - Updates

Little fun fact: Seattle has about a 17% chance of getting back to the dance and should win in the 10-11 game range and at least make it back to the playoffs (70% make it back). But the last repeat team just to make it back was back in 2003-2004 with the Patriots. Since then 3 different AFC and 4 NFC teams have won it all. Right now naturally, Vegas has them and the Broncos as 6/1 and us at 7/1 pre-draft.

The Webzone should have a ticker on the frontpage that displays Vegas stats for the 49ers -- more telling than a lot of the talking heads and other commentary. That and the beat writers would cover 90% of my 49er related needs.

And just to reiterate, of the 43 AB already ID'd as making the 53, we have monster competition already...even before the 6 picks in the top 100 and 11 picks overall. Now THIS is a deep roster:
Before we even consider how many 2014 draftees will make the 53, 46, etc. take a look at all these players who are expected to make huge jumps this year and compete for starting positions (by positions):
DB's:
Cox, Perrish - Will PC be this year's version of TB?
Cook, Chris - Will be competing for an outside CB position to back up Culliver/Brock/Wright and will also be a "press" CB which is a shift in philosophy for us
Morris, Darryl - Will be competing with a slot CB in this year's draft for a starting role
Wright, Eric - Already the #3 and will have a full off season to hit the ground running
Spillman, C.J. - An excellent ST but also may fit the "FS" role well which is important in today's game (vs. the SS role); SS and FS are interchangeable in our 3-4
DL:
Williams, Ian - Welcome back kid. Now you get to face a starting competition with Dorsey and split time with him
Dial, Quinton - Already got some field-time last year, will know the defense and can continue to grow under Tomsula this year. Let's watch the growth
Okoye, Lawrence - Expected to make a big jump this off season
Carradine, Tank - High expectations for this man and he's hungry
Jerod-Eddie, Tony - Played very well last year and may even push Dobbs off the roster
Dobbs, Demarcus - Tendered but may not even make the team with our depth!
LB:
Fleming, Darius (ILB?) - May be looked to move inside but came out of college as a pass rush specialist. And we haven't given up on him yet which says something, right?
Lemonier, Corey - Already a great start last year and will be expected to step up even more this year
Moody, Nick - The FO liked this kid and with Bowman out, he'll be leaned on heavily to step up this off season
Skuta, Dan - Is already our #3 OLB and very good ST and will only get better; can also play inside if needed
Wilhoite, Michael - Played well for Willis and now, we expect him to play great for Bowman esp. with a full off season to develop "knowing" he'll be the starter
QB:
Gabbert, Blaine - Will be expected to becoome a viable backup this year (trade bait?)
FB:
Debniak, Alex (Released)- Was looking like the backup to Miller in the pre season until he got hurt and went on I.R. Watch this one closely! We needed a true backup FB badly last year
OL:
Martin, Jonathan - Game on Snyder!
Kilgore, Daniel (2nd year/1st-year starter) - Already slated to be our starting C and compete with Looney
Looney, Joe - Played well at RG in spot-duty last year and is expected to make big strides. Iupati, look out!
Seymour, Ryan - Heard good things about this guy at the end of last year
Bykowski, Carter - Meh; dude looked horrible last off season and I doubt he'd beat out Marquardt and Martin and Snyder but don't underestimate growth
Marquardt, Luke - Already heard great things about his progress late last year; prototypical H/W/S
RB:
Hampton, Jewel - Love this guy; could surprise everyone while Lattimore gets his playing-game/legs back; will get lots of carries this off season again
Hunter, Kendall - Underused, as always
James, LaMichael - Underused, as always
Lattimore, Marcus - We all have big hopes for Marcus!
TE's:
Carrier, Derek - Same here; watch out Celek! We could have our next H-back, Delanie Walker
Celek, Garrett - Is going to have a heck of a time making the team this year
McDonald, Vance - Coaches already said they plan to incorporate him more into the passing game!
WR's:
Baldwin, Jon - Is expected to make big strides like Wright with a full off season and some experience in our system. This is his last shot but will have huge competition thanks to the draft/depth
Patton, Quinton - Man, is this guy hungry or what? Currently the #3 and may be worked into the slot more. If not, he'll have to work hard against a blue-chip X or Z WR
ST:
Schmidt, Colton (Andy had a poor year last year by his standards) - Will push Andy this year again
Nicely done !
I would definitely add S DJ Campbell to that list. He was a 7th round pick by the Panthers in 2012. He started their last 4 games of the season at strong safety ( 4 game winning streak ). The issues scouts had with him were his raw instincts, his ability to make pre-snap adjustements and his ability to play the ball in the air though none of those issues were visible in those 4 games, especially against the Falcons.
What scouts liked about him was his speed and tackling ability. He was also a highly touted recruit coming out of high school ( had an offer from LSU ). He also plays ST.
Dj Campbell 6´0 205 Pro Day
40 Yrd Dash 4.54 ( would have been 2nd. among safeties )
10 Yrd Dash 1.63
Bench 22 ( would have been tied for 1st. among safeties )
Vertical 38 ( would have been 2nd. among safeties )
Broad 10´07" ( would have been 2nd. among safeties )
20 Yrd Shuttle 4.22
3-Cone Drill 7.08
- In 2013 he lost his starting job to Mike Mitchell. He was then put on IR due to a leg injury and later waived.
- Signed onto Dolphins practice squad on October 18, 2013.
- Signed a one year contract with us on January 7, 2014.
It may be a long shot to say that he makes the team but I will definitely keep an close eye on him during Training Camp / Pre Season.

DeUh! Thanks so much for this insight. We all know what we have in most of the starters and sometimes, even their backups but what keeps the team top notch is having that internal farm system and development and shinning when called upon. I love posts like these b/c I'm looking for the next dark horse: Brock, Williams, Boone, etc. or players that were originally miscasted (Brooks, James, Hunter, etc.). So thank you for the update on DJ. Earlier in this post, someone also gave a nice assessment of CB Dax Swanson as well. We'll have to watch these guys closely and with the 11 or so draft picks, these guys are going to have to play out of their minds just to make the 53, let alone a chance to contribute to the 46.

What a fascinating situation for a kid who looked great virtually all yr long then just folds up like a cheap suit in his pro day.(oh, that's right, he didn't use his glove for pro day.)
I think it would be too hard to pass up a possible trade down for a pick or 2 extra, maybe a 2015 2nd or even 1st. I don't think we would take a QB in round 1. If we take one, I expect late 2nd, or late 3rd. I like Mettenberger, Murray, and Fales a lot.
On Bridgewater, I love the kid, I still have him as my top QB, but I see a slide for him, which I wouldn't of thought way back in September, I thought he was a consensus 1st overall or 2nd overall pick.

Thanks, AB. I still think we move up...twice...(I know, improbable)...to get trent's best CB. Then I think we do it again for a 2nd corner...( we did draft two OLs in rd one about 6-7 yrs ago, but that wasn't trent). But in reading your mock, if our guy wasn't there at #30, you had garoppolo, and the Bridgewater thing suddenly hit me. All I know is we need 2 corners, not 1, if we want to beat SEA. We have 4 very good backups, but that isn't good enough. And we need a Qb. I can see Coach H coaching up Gabbert to become a very serviceable QB. What I don't see is Gabbert stepping in for an injured kap and QBing our team to victory against elite teams...hence the question. I appreciate your answer and think it a very good one.

No prob Pas. I think we need to draft a top notch backup to Kap. I'm not sold on Gabbert. Would love Garoppolo is he fell to 3rd round, I would even trade up for him. But I see him going mid 2nd, maybe early 2nd, depends on how the other QBs fall or where they go.

I guess, AB, it is always possible, 5-8 teams screw up and take QBs bang, bang, bang. It would be bad football, but GMs with no QBs or really lousy QBs, get nervous and end up drafting a guy who should have gone a round later because they are afraid of what GMs with no Qbs will do. In a way they are drafting a 2nd round pick "defensively" in the first, not because the particular Qb deserves to be taken high in draft. Jerry jones has done that for about 10 yrs and it is a bad joke in dallas(not Qbs, but his high picks)

The Pre-Draft Visits are in the books.
Here is my final Mock Draft based on only players we've visited with (many, several times) tied to MadDog's Big Board.
To put this into perspective, per sfout, ",,.We signed/drafted 6 of 37 players we met with during the pre-draft process last season. That number doesn't include Chuck Jacobs who obviously caught the teams eye at the 2 USU games they scouted and participated in the SF area 49ers pro day also Kevin McDermott who they got to be the Long Snapper or any other players I'm possibly forgetting.For the umpteenth time of this thread. We consistently use roughly 50% of our selections on roughly 20% of the players the FO meets with. The remaining selections are used on players that the FO was being discreet with because Baalke has been on record saying that, "...usually the first time you see a player on the field your gut is right so there is no need to bring them in for visits or workouts". The 49ers essentially use meetings to do any pertinent digging or to create their own personnel file, a la Blain Gabbert, in case they have the opportunity to sign them later to potentially reference for game planning and work outs/visits to do medical checks."
30th = S Calvin Pryor 5'11" 207 4.65 (will drop to 30th from 23rd); if not, CB Jason Verrett 5'9" 198 4.38 or X or Z WR Kelvin Benjamin 6'4" 236 4.64/Cody Latimer 6'3" 215 4.50
56th = Y/Slot WR + Returner Paul Richardson 6'0" 175 4.43 (will drop from 53rd to 56th)
61st = CB Baushad Breeland 6'0" 185 4.55
77th = CB Stanley Jean-Baptiste 6'3" 220 4.44 (will drop from 74th to 77th)
94th = RB Charles Sims 6'0" 214 4.40
100th = OLB Trent Murphy 6'5" 250 4.76
129th = CB Loucheiz Purifoy 6'0" 190 4.49
170th = QB David Fales 6'2" 220 (will drop from 169th to 170th)
242nd = H-Back (TE/FB) Blake Annen 6'4" 247 4.38 (not visited)
243rd = FB Trey Millard 6'2" 253 (not visited)
245th = PK Jarod Brown
UDFA's: We will be very interested in the following:
QB Jeff Mathews 6'3" 223
H-Back (TE/FB) Nic Jacobs 6'5" 260 4.85
FB Gator Hoskins 6'2" 253 4.67

We'll have to watch these guys closely and with the 11 or so draft picks, these guys are going to have to play out of their minds just to make the 53, let alone a chance to contribute to the 46.
Devon Wylie is a guy we got buried on the roster who could turn out to be a pretty good special teams returner.

Saw an article by a Miami beat writer shortly after we got Gabbert that he's gonna absolutely knock your socks off in practice. This is the opposite of what we heard of Kaep when he was sitting behind Alex, and why it took a year and a half and an injury for him to start a game. Clearly Gabbert has got the physical talent. Does anyone have a handle on what his problems are and how susceptible to coaching they may be? Steve Young was terrible on a bad team with bad coaching in Florida before he got here too, and he turned out pretty good.

BOI, I am on record as saying Gabbert was brought here for trade bait. But I assumed we would by now have had a veteran back up QB, in hand, and it hasn't happened. I still have a hard time imagining Coach H bet his entire yr on Kap never getting injured, and if so, GABbert steps in. To me that just seems impossible. Ergo, if kap gets hurt we are going to be in shape...and it won't be good shape at Qb...so we almost certainly are going to take one of the better qbs(AB likes Garropolo), but bridgewater could fall to really late based on his pro day fiasco. I guess right now, I would have to guess we take Trent's favorite qB out of the bunch, and it could be someone I am unfamiliar with.

This is interesting. I see that he's 5'9" 187 and runs a 4.36. Does he have return abilities? Can he work the slot? Take the top off once in a while?
