This guy is slow coming out of his cuts. That is the main reason he gets little to zero separation when running routes versus man coverage. Nearly all his targets were when he was running a straight line type of route, using his size to out jump or shield the CB away from the ball. Even then he rarely came down with the ball. The coaches know he is a crap route runner and don't even try giving him routes that involve digging his foot in the grass to pivot his body. This makes him a one trick pony and that's why he sucks. He has great physical traits, but it's not about that for a WR. It's about coming in and out of your cuts sharply, while not losing speed. He can improve, but will require good coaching and many have mentioned how questionable the 49er WR coaches are.

A fast WR. Boldin and Crabtree do not break speed limits. V. Davis is very fast and most deep passes were to him.
What is with Baldwin? I saw him in action on a single play this year. A very long pass to him in in where he makes great footwork as he goes out of bounds. Touchdown! Wait .. he bobbles the ball as he hits the ground. Incomplete pass. Well, we are going to try this again, soon I'm sure. But we don't .... never saw him get another ball his way. Why? Why? Why?

Gore is getting old
Hunter is not an offensive playmaker, and might lose his carries to Lattimore
Patton is a rookie who didn't have a great season, maybe more to come
Baldwin is a joke
Osgood deserves more playing time, i would like to see him more in 4 WR sets
James needs to be used more, thats Romans fault
Davis is our only vertical threat, that needs to change
McDonald is a rookie, personally i want Lyerla from Oregon to come in and take his spot.
One thing we lack is an explosive playmaker, we need somebody who has the precense where the defense looks at him and goes we need a man on him 24/7.
Somebody that can make you pay for man coverage like a TY Hilton, Mike Wallace, D Jackson, Maclin,
If we can find a player than can extend our field and be a vertical threat our offensive woes are solved.

I don't see anyone on that list with even close to elite speed. Can you think of another team that doesn't have at least one receiver with elite speed?

Does anyone have elite speed on the Packers, Patriots, Broncos and Saints? Honest question there...
I believe the only team that takes the top off on a consistent basis is Seattle (they practice these broken ad lib jump balls until they puke), Ravens with Jacoby and perhaps, the Giants & Bengals? And do the Giants have elite speed? I believe they just have complicated routes and great route runners that can get behind defenders? I would guess that most teams, whether speed or not, just add in double-moves, post patterns and are will to take shots down field (unlike us). Again, we've had Moore, Moss, Ginn, Lockette, Jenkins, VD, etc. as "speed guys" who can catch but we never/rarely used them in that fashion. Ever. They were used as nothing more than deep decoy route runners for us to help clear out underneath zones for others like VD and Crabtree. That said, yes, real speed does have to be respected (ala Ginn against us). So I get that. But within the context of our offensive philosophy, is a speed guy really going to do much for us more than as a decoy? Or the "threat" of a deep ball?
Anyway, we'll find out soon. But I'll be more curious as to how we'll actually use this WR more than anything.

Gore is getting old - Gore is "older" but excellent in the space when he has the ball in space (remember the 4th down in Seattle)? He's just rarely ever used as an outlet in the passing game out in space.
Hunter is not an offensive playmaker, and might lose his carries to Lattimore - Hunter is electric and never drops a ball and I have little doubt he'd be even more dynamic in space if utilized in the passing game.
Patton is a rookie who didn't have a great season, maybe more to come - Patton was often times used at the X & Z spots (like where Kyle Williams used to get beat up). He is best suited for the slot IMHO (where he's have clean and free releases).
Baldwin is a joke - We don't know this yet.
Osgood deserves more playing time, i would like to see him more in 4 WR sets - In case you haven't noticed, we only use VD, Crabtree and Boldin (75% of the time). And we rarely run 3-5 receiver sets (and when we do, FB's and TE's are usually in this "receiving set."
James needs to be used more, thats Romans fault - James is in the same boat as Gore and Hunter re: the passing game.
Davis is our only vertical threat, that needs to change - Davis, Crabtree and Boldin are all excellent (so is McDonald/Patton) with RAC. Most teams don't have a consistent vertical threat b/c it's a very low % play (and dangerous); most teams rely on scheme to get their playmakers the ball and then rely on RAC.
McDonald is a rookie, personally i want Lyerla from Oregon to come in and take his spot. - Nothing wrong with competition BUT we have a 350 page playbook and we just spent a year training McDonald to be a blocker. If you expect Lyerla to come in and trump him, good luck with that one.

How did Mike Wallace do in Miami? I agree that I'd love a consistent deep threat for a variety of reasons but this would still be less than 5% of our offensive approach in OUR offense.

I sneak in our hidden gem Devon Wylie.
folks don't know about his 94 speed.
sure he drops passes here and there... but atleast he gets downfield.
I use Baldwin when my other receivers are tired.....although Patton is first off the bench.
my starters are Manningham (92 speed) and Crabtree. Then I sub out Manningham for Boldin when I am running the ball and just trying to sustain drives.
game is ridiculous.....it's better than before, but still....smh. We need more football games.
