IF we don't resign Whitner, yes, I could see a top FS pick. I think with all the 4 and 5 WR sets we seem to play against, we will go with another hard hitting, IQ and very speedy FS with much range back there ala Reid.

With all the 4 and 5 WR sets we seem to play against, we should worry about solid coverage a bit more than hard hitting.

Truuuuue! 100% agree. Just noting that Reid, even as a FS, can also hit hard as well; best of both worlds! Also, we we draft must be a sure-tackler as well. We're not asking for much here are we? LOL

We've had luck with one LSU safety...wonder if Loston could be our guy. He and Reid might be able to draw on some synergies from when they used to play together. Help to offset the destabilizing impact of losing Whitner to FA.

I would be worried about his coverage skills.
He only had 10 passes defended over the last two years.

All of those #s need to be taken with a grain of salt.
Loston played in the "vaunted" SEC
Dowling played in the Sun Belt conference
Bucannon played in the PAC-12
Ward played in the MAC conference
....While NFL talent is NFL talent you always need to keep in mind if the level of inferior competition artificially inflated their game or were they on a team that was stacked for their conference, regardless of what it was, that kept them from showcasing their skills more.

Loston, Dowling, and Bucannon are all fine physical specimens...Now which one of those fits the bill and has the HEART.

Telvin Smith FSU or Dion Bailey USC would be good fits for the 49ers imo

I think Spillman can be a great SS....
he can tackle... he's also very fast. depends on his smarts and instinct but I think potential is there.
