The thing that is happening with Whitner on the WZ IMO is they think it is super easy to replace a Safety. Because we hit on Reid who is very good. But you can just as easily bust. Baalke has some recent huge busts. Mostly on offense. But don't think that just because we hit on Reid it is easy to replace a good starting Safety in the NFL. Plus I think losing 2 Safetys in 2 years may be too much loss of continuity to this overall secondary. Even Reid is a young guy still learning. He needs veteran leadership. We had to trade up picks to go up and get him. We may or may not want to do that this year based on other need positions. There may or may not be a S worth that trade up to 18 or so to get. There may or may not be a good one there at 30.
People also get scared off because of the mega dollars. Whitner will not command the huge money Goldson got on the open market. Goldson is 6'2" and a huge hitter. Whitner is shorter and lighter. He will get a pretty good offer somewhere but I think he is in the range of possibly signable. Don't think because Goldson got mega dollars we have to do the same for Whitner. I don't think that is the case. It's an apple and an orange.
Personally I think it would shore up a lot to have him back. Obviously don't sign him to mega dollars but something fair for both sides.

uhhhhhhhh... no
Uhhhhhhh.... why not.. explanation? Culliver played safety in college plus he knows the system
1. It is a very good possibility that Culliver will be our number one corner going into next season.. If not, definite number 2..
2. He wasn't a strong safety in college
3. Even if it did happen, it would be the least obvious option
4. You don't take a player who has excelled at a position on a winning NFL team and the change his position
If Whitner isn't back next year, the starting strong safety for next season isn't on the roster right now

It looks like Spillman is two inches TALLER but about ten pounds lighter than Whitner. However, he has shown solid tackling on ST. If he can tackle well enough to offset Whitner's weight advantage, those extra two inches could be nice in coverage.
Regardless, I've never seen him cover well enough to deserve a starting role on D. We don't need another guy out there giving up completions and looking to make hits. We need defenders.

The steelers have problems with there cap. And Polamalu command a 8.25M next year… They can cut him just like they did with James Harrison.
If that's happen the Niners are a good opportunity to win a ring. 1 or 2 year with a cap friendly contract… We can groomed a SS behind him.
He didn't missed any game this year and had pretty good stats : 69 tackles, 2 int, 5 FF.

Boom
that may not be that bad of an idea. That idea has been floated around since he was drafted because we've had a starter at safety hit free agency every year in the harbaugh era. This offseason it makes the most sense since cully is coming off a ACL tear. ACL tears can sometimes make players a bit slower so I can see the conversion working out. We move cully to FS and reid to SS, we place brock as the starter and sign someone like verner or vontae davis and use a high draft pick on a CB. BAMMM...legion of boom who????

very true. and he has good experience. id rather keep whitner though we gotta remember whitner is one of biggest parts of this defenses personality. he isnt the biggest but is the heaviest hitter on this whole defense an while i am annoyed with him missing tackles by going for the big slam just the fear factor alone of his an our D's reputation makes us better.
plus i think putting 2 new safetys in would make defenses target us there and up the middle more i know reid will be a 2nd year but it would be the least consistent of our D as far as players go
