Who will play Strong Safety if Whitner leaves via Free Agency?

Antone Exum, Pryor, Bernard Pollard, or draft sleeper please!!

Bucannon from Washington State, Loston from LSU, Dixon from Baylor and Sunseri from Alabama are all 6 feet or more with more speed and coverage skills than Whitner has right now. Any of those guys would be great compliments to Reid, they'd cost a lot less and the team would probably be set at safety for years. And all of them are available from the 2nd through the 4th rounds. One of those guys is going to be playing safety along side Reid next season. That's my prediction.

What about that article that came out a few days ago (Lynch?) stating that the SS is like the QB of the secondary - calling plays and getting guys into position. From that article it made it sound like we play a very complex defense where guys are changing coverage even AFTER the ball is snapped.
A rookie SS may be faster, taller and stronger than Whitner but how can we measure a player's mental aptitude in terms of being the 'QB of the secondary''?

I think it was noted before the draft last year that Reid was a cerebral player and a good student of the game, which was highlighted by Whitner's comments on Reid's note taking ability during their meeting sessions and how he takes notes like a veteran.

Is there any info out like that about the safeties we may be looking to draft?

^^^ That's a good question. I don't know enough about the safety prospects to answer. I believe one of them was Reid's team mate in college at LSU and they have some chemistry together already, so that's an interesting prospect.

If Bailey is on the board in a late 3rd. AND the 49ers have are able to use that pick on a DB. He may be a viable option. He's very smart, has good size, but can cover WELL.

But, I believe, he's a late 3rd mid 4th guy that will need to sit for a season. He's better than TJ McDonald who went in the 3rd. He is WAY better in coverage.
