Just so hard to think about right now. You figure the odds are stacked against us to keep going this deep into the playoffs and coming up short. I hope I am wrong and can't wait for the season to start already.

I am already ready for the 2014 season and the two rematches against the soon to be super bowl runner-ups. As long as Colin keeps improving and learns from that disastrous 4th quarter I have very little doubt we will do better than this year.

Yeah. We're gonna lose some expensive vets but I think we have the talent to fill those gaps.
the chruning of a roster thats what happens. seattle better win this ring because they are in for it down the road. a lot of guys need to be paid and most of them make under a million as mid to late rounders. its going to be a tough squeeze for them.

I am excited about the future of this team. I really want to see Lattimore in action before I say that he is the future at RB. From what I have seen of him in college, he has the talent, but I would not be surprised to see the coaching staff get rid of Hunter and Dixon. They really did not give Hunter any playing time after his injury, and as much as I like him, I think that is a very telling thing. Dixon and LMJ got more PT by the end of the season.
I would not be surprised if we roll with Gore, Lattimore, LMJ, and a rookie at RB.
The defense is going to be something to watch as well. I think the plan was to draft Reid to not only replace Goldson, but to give him a year to learn next to Whitner. I think Whitner is gone, and Reid becomes the leader in the secondary. I think you might see them bring in someone like Bernard Pollard to replace Whitner, and Reid will dictate coverages.
Tank, Dial, and Ian Williams should provide nice depth, but until they see action, I am cautiously optimistic. I do like the idea of keeping a rotation there similar to how the OLBs rotated with Skuta.
As for the offense, until Harbaugh gets three things into a regular portion of the passing attack, I think the offense is going to hold this team back.
1) RB screens: How many times can teams stack the box with 8 and 9, and he never uses that aggression against them? This has to be addressed. A simple way to counter is to dump off to a screen pass. It may not always work, but it does get the defense thinking about it, and causes hesitation to charge upfield. Right now, when a team blitzes the Niners it is so obvious that they are not thinking about anything other than the blitz. The Niners and Cardinals ran screens less than any other team in the league, for what it is worth.
2) PA pass out of pro sets: Same reason as above. Perfect example was this last game. Seattle was charging into the backfield to stuff our run. 8 or 9 in the box almost every time. It would have been perfect for Roman to set up an I-formation, and fake the hand off and look deep. Most of the PA passes that this offense runs are out of the shotgun, and are not nearly as effective. If you want to see an example of the play I am referring too, just look up the Roddy White TD from this year's game against the Falcons. It was text book. We have the talent for this. We don't use it.
3) Kap check downs. Harbaugh, Roman, and Chryst really need to figure this out. Of the 5 games the team lost this year, several defenses were giving up big space underneath for Kap to check down to. He just did not see them. I think this is a simple fix really. I would rather take a QB that throws a great deep ball and teach him how to check down than a QB with a noodle arm that can do nothing but check down. Shawn Hill comes to mind. It worked until defenses figured out he could not throw deep. Then he was toast.
All in all I think we are in for a good long run, but it is time that this offense catches up with the defense. Not to go all John Madden here, but teams that can score TDs win. Teams that rely on their kicker to do most of their scoring do not. I think Steve Young said something like, "every time you kick a field goal, you are closer to a loss". I want to see this team go in with that mentality.

Good post! Lot's to look forward to. There are a lot of personnel decisions to be made, and we are likely to lose more than one veteran who contributed to this team's recent success. However, to the team that won two playoff road games and came within one play and 22 seconds of the Superbowl again, we get to add:
A young starting CB with great size, good instincts, and playoff experience (Cully)
A young, athletic starting NT who's teammates really seem to respect (Williams)
Young, promising, highly regarded talent at RB (Lattimore), DE (Carradine), and NT/DE (Dial).
A brand new stadium! The excitement and support towards wins that this will generate could be considerable (with a nod that it's not actually in SF any more...)
13 draft picks (!!!) including 6 out of the first 100 picks (that's 6% of the best potential players coming into the entire league!)
More reasons for optimism:
Addition by subtraction with Carlos Rogers likely being gone.
Another year for Patton and McDonald to mature and contribute as key players, already with playoff experience.
Return of most of our talented offensive line intact, with a possible upgrade at center if Kilgore lives up to potential.
Most key young players still under contract for next year (Kaep, Aldon, Crabtree, Iupati)
2014/2015 is our year!!!! Book it!!!!

No reason not to be confident! We have the coachs, players, and staff! And we most definately have the kickass fans we do!!!! Hope we can retain boldin, dawson, whitner, osgoog, dixon! I dont see dixon as option wit latimore coming back. T brown would be great, but he will be testin the market according to couple reports!! Goodwin getting older has played some great games, pushed rd a lil but over all pretty damn good, i know i will get flamed for that one he gets lotta hate. We have 4 guys who are probowlers tho davis boone seem not to get recognised! Hope we can extend boone before he gets to costly!!!!!
Super bowl 49 lets win that s**t!!

So, my take is this ... in today's NFL you aren't going to be the 1980s 49ers or the 1990s Cowboys - the salary cap prevents a team from winning the SB every year. Parity makes it tough to be the unquestioned "best" year after year. Hell, the Patriots haven't won a SB in 10 years. But they are the model for success in today's NFL. So, are we like the Patriots? Yes, and no.
Why we are like the Patriots - we have a very good coaching staff. Say what you want about Harbaugh - the guy knows how to win and to get the most from his players. He is the best thing to happen to this franchise since the 1990s from a stability and credibility standpoint. We also have a very good front office, that hits on more young talent than it misses on and grabs key free agents without breaking the (long term) bank. The combination of good coaching and good personnel decisions means we have a foundation to be successful for a long, long time. Finally, we have talented players. And talent wins in this league.
Why we are not like the Patriots - we don't play the Jets, Dolphins, and Bills 6 times a year. Sorry, but the NFC West is the best division in football. It's going to remain competitive as hell for the next 5 years. So although we are very talented and have a great foundation, we can't rely on 11 wins, the first round bye, and home field advantage as much as the Patriots have in the Belichick era.
I like our team and think it will be very competitive for a long time under this regime. Will that translate to Lombardi trophies? You'd hope so. But even if all it translates into is a decade of playoff births and near misses (like the Patriots since 2005) I'll take it.

Yes, but it wasn't just luck that got the Niners to the NFC Championship game (in fact, we overcame quite a bit of bad luck to get there IMO). It was careful planning, roster-building, coaching, practice and execution. If we do those same things at the same level or better, we will do better next time.

At the end of the day still no one has it better than us. We fought a great battle and should have won that game and we all know it but we must not dwell on the past. As we look forward to the draft and free agency I see nothing but great things in the future! Could you imagine how our front office feels? This is just the begging of greatness! Ohh don't worry we will be back next year! And don't forget which team host Super Bowl 50??? Haha WHO COULD POSSIBLY HAVE IT BETTER THAN US!?!?! Nooooooooobodddyyyyyy!!!!! Seattle still has to win for anything to ever matter right? Lol
