Osgood Punt Block & Illegal Advance of Ball

This dudes a game changer. Good to have him back.
He was the last of the players I wanted re-signed. He was probably our best coverage guy last year even over Spillman. Now that we are done re-signing our own it's time to work on extensions. Kap, Crabtree and Culliver should be our highest priority. With Aldon we will use our 2015 option so no hurry there and Iupati we started but that might not happen. Other than that we have Dorsey, Skuta, Hunter and Spillman for next year's free agents we can work on. I'm not sure we start them now probably closer to the end of the season or after it. Culliver and Kap should be done some time between June 2nd and the start of the season.

Mods, Can we change the name of the thread to the Kassim Osgood Thread?

Reason is we get more out of the entire roster. You don't want a bunch of guys in uniform standing on the sidelines contributing nothing to the team. If they're not playing offense or defense, they must be able to play special teams. Most teams don't have quality special teams units like we do.
2011 we went heavy ST like we did in 2013. You would think with what happened in 2012 and the SB fans would be ok with going heavy ST. That year we traded Jones and didn't re-sign Costanzo and it killed us all year and in the SB we gave up a kickoff TD return.

Very few players are game changers, Osgood is in that category.

I understand that, this is probably the wrong thread for this discussion as my comment is directed more to players who only play ST than Osgood. The only thing I don't like about the Osgood signing is that I want the 9ers to draft 2 WR in the 1st 4 rounds, and I doubt they do that now. They got 5 on the active roster now, and have Wylie on the practice squad that is a slot receiver/punt returner. I would like to see them draft guys that can play ST and develop larger roles in offense/defense a la Delanie Walker and Bowman. Having multiple ST aces eats up valuable rosters spots on a talented roster and when that is combined with Chris Cook, John Baldwin reclamation projects there is less room to develop unknown young talent.

I agree with your sentiment, and i was thinking the exact same thing.

Right now we have the typical 3 ST concentrated people... but also have Ventrone, Osgood, Spillman, and Dahl (to a certain extent) who are only on the roster to for their ST ability.

I really want us to draft a safety that can has some roster value at safety but can be (or was in college) a special teams standout. Then we can get rid of Dahl and actually have a competent backup safety.

Osgood and Ventrone would be next on my chopping block, but replacing them can wait till next year.

Honestly, I think drafting 2 WRs in the 1st 4 rounds is still on the table. Osgood's presence on the roster shouldn't effect that. He's a 34 year old STer, playing year-by-year for the vet minimum. There is not commitment to him financially or roster wise. If Baalke see's 2 WRs he really likes, he'll take them. May the best 6 or so guys make the final roster.

I agree the team needs to balance keeping guys who are ST specialists, and guys who have potential to actually contribute on offense/defense.

I see Osgood as the #6 WR but active due to ST. This hurts Chuck Jacobs shot at the team but he still could make it if he plays well enough to be the #5. Depends if we draft a WR in the 3rd-5th because then they probably get the #5 spot. So 1.Crabtree 2.Boldin 3.1st/2nd rd vs Patton 4.Loser of #3 Battle 5.3rd-5th Rd or Baldwin vs Chuck Jacobs. I don't see us cutting a 3rd-5th rounder for Baldwin or Jacobs. If we took our 2nd WR in the 7th then yeah possibly. I don't see Baldwin sticking around and Jacobs probably goes back to the PS for another year. Final roster probably is Crabtree, Boldin, Patton, 1st/2nd, 3rd Rd, Osgood (active for ST)

I think it hurts Jacobs and Baldwin, as both would need to be better at STs than Osgood is. I doubt that happens. I was dissapointed they didn't give him a signing bonus. But if he makes the team he makes $20K and his $955K salary is guaranteed. I have no issues with that.

Kap, Crabs and Cully need extensions.

Next year, Aldon will have his option year picked up soon, so no worries there. Dorsey, Skuta, Spillman, and Hunter would be nice to see kept around. Ventrone too. Everything seems to be falling into place long term. Reid won't be a free agent till 2018(He will have his option picked up for 2017).

I was just going to edit and say Jacobs and Baldwin. Seems like no room for them because we will draft a WR in the 1st-2nd most likely and then another in the 3rd-5th. I don't see us cutting a 3rd-5th round WR for Baldwin or Jacobs. Osgood is the 6th and that leaves no where for Baldwin or Jacobs (could have been #6) if we draft a mid round WR. So barring us keeping 7 wrs which is very unlikely or us not drafting a 2nd wr it doesn't look good for Baldwin or Jacobs. And yeah like you said Baldwin and Jacobs are really hurt by not playing special teams. I guess Osgood could not make the cut but Baldwin/Jacobs would have to really light it up to cut Osgood.

And yeah really happy with the offseason besides re-signing all the guys I wanted and re-signing Donatell and extending Fangio we also have extended Miller and Kilgore. If we can take care of Kap and Culliver yet that leaves Crabtree, Iupati (not likely) as the only big ones left for 2015. Then of course Dorsey, Skuta, Spillman and Hunter but those guys should be fairly easy to do this season or after the season and before FA.

These are great points. And we rarely ever use 3 WR's anyhow so unless it's a Mike Evans he won't be seeing the field until next year esp. if Patton continues to develop at the #3 (who has been learning all 3 WR positions). We don't use slot WR's. Even when we go 5-receivers, it's still only 2 WR's, 2 TE's and 1 FB/RB. And is this rookie WR going to be leaps and bounds better than Patton? Ideally, you'd have Crabtree and Boldin out at the X & Z with the big developing bodies of Evans and Baldwin with Patton and another slot WR developing...and next year we'd see less 2 TE-sets and more use of the Y-slot position for WR's.
Even with the limited use of 3 WR sets, the 9ers need a minimum of 5 WR when you consider injuries and age. Crabs and Patton had significant injuries and Boldin used a lot of tread on his tires last year.

I absolutely love having Osgood as a 6th WR even if they end up cutting him off the 53 man roster. Imagine being a rookie WR and playing on the special teams cover units with Osgood, you have to step up to be recognized. Same goes with Ventrone and Spillman. Competition is a great thing.
