Been saying this for the past few years. I'd rather for Kaep to stay somewhere in the middle of the pack than be a 5,000 yard passer. All these teams paying QBs $20 million are a liability to themselves. The Falcons were a super bowl contender at the beginning of this season ran into a few injuries now their playing for a better draft pick. Us on the other hand, dealt with MORE injuries on both sides of the ball and we are still 6-2....

Its all about Fantasy stats and flashy plays according to the NFL . Then comes the Niners who have a dynamic run game and just grind it down your frickin throat. I don't care what the stats say or what anyone thinks. So long as the W's keep coming I'm happy.

A better indicator of passing efficiency is yards-per-attempt average. We average 8 ypa, which ranks 7th in the NFL.
this we are using kap like we did Alex which is good. Keep him under 30 attempts and run the ball. Besides half the league throws 40 plus times anyways now so don't look too much into the low pass yards. We are 4 in offense I believe and 5 in defense so balance always wins.

Alex lover. lol.
I agree with the whole commercial thing. Especially in the beginning of the season when we were losing. Kaep's commercials were getting really annoying.
Those commercials were shot during the offseason. As were the photoshoots. Nothing wrong with that. I do think there is some denial about the state of our passing offense but as long as we are winning I'm not going to complain....
I do have a buddy who is a chargers fan say the same thing. It's true barley noticed. Kap never dives into playbook and photos after a drive he throws his hat on and chills on the sideline. Every other QB seems to at least look to get better. But we winning so Idk guess let it slide for now.

We're dead last in attempts by A LOT . . . like 40 attempts between us and #31. Crazy low.
At least we're #7 in yards per attempt . . . so we got that goin' for us.
I also think things will open up with the added weaponry. Looking forward to it.

Thanks for providing these numbers. I've taken the time to study them thoroughly, and like you asked, I have noticed some interesting correlations that might be related to the thread topic in question.
First, if you look closely, you notice that we are 32nd in two categories. And here is the interesting part. One of those categories is passing attempts, and the other one is, wait for it...
...passing yards. I think this is beyond coincidence. That fact that both numbers involve passing, and both numbers are dead last must have a correlation.
The same thing occurs with rushing yards. Again, we are 1st in two categories. One of these categories is rushing attempts, and the other one, yep, you guessed it, rushing yards.
Kap has a LOT of work to do with his passing attempts. Perhaps he can audible into passes on more plays, including kneel downs at the end of a blowout victory as these are wasted opportunities to create another passing attempt.
Frank Gore could try and get tackled more often for a big loss, that way we are almost forced to pass on 2nd and 3rd down.
Edit. Whoops.
Good point about passing instead of kneel downs. As long as the other team is trying to score, so should the 49ers. The only way the 49ers can show off all their pass plays to future opponents is to continue to have a wide open playbook, no matter how good the 49er D is playing in a blowout. This will also allow Kap to ask for more money on an extension since his stats will be good. This will allow him to get more shoes, which could translate to better play.

This is really untrue. In the Sound FX for the Cardinals game they have a couple shots of him in meeting with his QB coach. In the last Jags game there were shots of him talking in a huddle and looking at pics with Chryst/McCoy. Then we had shots of McCoy getting advice from Kap on the sideline.

well we have scored about 22 more points on average than our last five opponents so we go into run the clock mode pretty early. no need to throw

Admit it, you are not over your love affair with mr. 9-0 Smith, admit it. It's always the same with you. Hey, how about a A Smith thread in the NFL section, you could really do some damage there..

i dont know the exact stats and someone more in the know willbe able to clarify, but i believe we throw it fewer than any team in the league but when we do throw it we are towards the top half to the league in terms of efficientcy

There are several conclusions that we must reach for both Kap and for our primary running back, Frank Gore.
Kap needs a LOT of work to do with his passing attempts. Perhaps he can audible into passes on more plays, including kneel downs at the end of a blowout victory as these are wasted opportunities to create another passing attempt.
Frank Gore could improve his rushing attempts by not running too far a distance past the first down marker, but rather, once he gets to the marker he can perform the slide maneuver, similar to the way quarterbacks run. That way we will have more field to work with and more rushing attempts.
Being dead last in these categories is embarrassing, and I hope these two players try and use these types of creative solutions to ameliorate the problem.
LOL. Nice post Brian.
It's hilarious how people put so much stock into total passing yards, and completely ignore the fact we are last in attempts. This is by design because you obviously don't want to air it out when you only have 2 legit passing options (Boldin, Davis), and everyone else is a scrub.
On a per-attempt basis we are 7th in the NFL (8 yards per pass attempt). That is a VERY good mark. It's a little worrisome that so many posters who have been on this board for a long time don't recognize this, or are choosing to ignore it just to hate on our QB.
Face it, they are still in unrequited love with mr arm of gold alex smith, who I might add even at 9-0, is still being called a game manager by almost all sports writers for what it's worth..It's so sad to see such unrequited love...

I think this stat is overrated but it does point to a weakness in our offense. Are we horrible? No. But we do have one of the weaker WR corps in the league until we get healthy crabs and manningham. We can run the table with it but it requires that every other facet of our team is rolling. That's simply too much pressure to be perfect everywhere. This was noticeable in the preseason and throughout the fist half. Let's hope manning ham and crabs come back 100%.
