We all need to relax, this team will make the playoffs but will bot get home field advantage. We played three very tough teams to start the season so 1-2 does not shock me
However, watching the first three games shows me some real issues with the team
1. The offense is out of sync. I was shocked to see Colin play 3 plays in preseason and come out when the likes of Tom Brady and Peyton with their age and shaky lines played half a game. Colin needed the reps and our coaches messed up
2. Offensive line is playing like crap. Our strength is the run and mauling people. If iupati is not used on pulls and power runs, he becomes useless and a liability. Honestly, we dont need to extend him once his contract is up because of #3
3. All our linemen are maulers and good run blockers. Teams are hitting the gap between our linemen and trying to make Colin leave the pocket early. They are keeping a LB to spy on Colin. The best way to punish this is screen passes to RB. However, since Norv Turner left, i have not seen niners get anything out of screen plays. Our offensive line is slow and often fail to set downfield blocks. Usually our screen pass attempts become broken plays where Qb gets sacked or has to throw away incomplete. Kilgore is great at getting to the second level as well as staley, but neither are great at it despite their quickness. Look at broncos and saints utilizing screens not only to gain chunk yards, but to keep the defense from hitting gaps and running straight at Qb without discipline
4. Colin can be a great Qb, but he is still raw upstairs. He is not good at reading defenses or making audibles. Hence so many wasted timeouts. Roman needs to simplify the plays for him .. Meaning one call, line up quick and run it irregardless what the defense is showing. I see lots of confusion after audibles where players dont know what they are supposed to do or where to line up. Besides, when a team breaks the huddle, lines up immediately and runs the play, even if the defense knows whats coming, they havent done their defensive audibles or communication, so we would be at an advantage.
5. Build the confidence of some of our players.. Run quick screens to patton and williams just to give them confidence. If a wideout hasnt been thrown to all game and the first pass coming my way is 20 yard pass on tight coverage, of course every wr will struggle
6. Our defense is giving up a ton of points because our offense can not sustain drives. Incomplete passes is making the defense come right back out. Both sea and indy game the defense was out >35 minutes, 10 more minutes than when we had alex at helm. Alex mainly handed off the ball and allowed frank to milk the clock.
7. Use less pistol, where everyone is packed in. Either go strong I and run like our strength or go spread formation with 4-5 WRs spread out the defense and use Colin's run skills
8. Yes, Colin is our Franchise Qb, but Harbaugh and co really did him a disservice taking out his fire and making him a conscious Qb. I see drew brees getting hit and stretching out for first down, as well as jay cutler and big ben. We told Colin to take care of his body and not get injured, now 3rd and 4 he runs and slides short of first down even when he can stretch get a small hit and get a first down or tries to throw it to avoid running and getting hit. Yes, i agree, protect your QB and don't allow him to take 5-10 hits per game but encourage him to stretch out and occasionally take a hit to get a first down and then slide down instead of trying to get 5 or 6 more meaningless yards.
9. WR?? Use more trips and stack formation. Even philly WR get open
Thoughts?

I guess i bought to much into the JH always winning after a loss thing. i am shocked and upset the way we played, our body language, the coaches acting like they had no idea what to do,. at f**king home, after we got beat and had something to prove. I really am worried that if we get off to a bad start thursday, the team and coaches will crawl into a fetal position,. I do not like that feeling, i would more than happy to come back here thursday night and say how wrong i was and how proud I am of the team and coaches and (gulp) roman

paddled?
it was 13-7 halfway through the 4th....if we had a real game plan with halftime adjustments we should have beat them

here is what will help Colin back off the mat, first thing, shave that beard, 2nd wear the left handed glove like he did in the post season. 3rd, go through his progressions instead of bailing from the pocket so quickly.

Well, he mentioned that he always gives his receivers more time to get open before he runs, maybe it's to just RUN KAP RUN! Of course, after a good balanced game plan.

Not to say i told u so, but like i pointed out above..
1. Simplified game plan
2. Quick in out of huddle
3. No screaming or wild gesturing from Kap, line up amd smash mouth
4. OC did a good job narrowing the field for Kap and allowing him only to look at half the field and make quick decisions
5. Confidence booster for OL

"We don't need to extend Iupati once his contract is up"?
He made the 2012 All-Pro first team andwas also one of the six 49ers selected as Pro Bowl starters. And behind him we have Looney.
Not sure why some posters are insisting that Iupati can go at the expiry of his contract or should be re-signed for peanuts, but O linemen need time to develop. Iupati is a very good guard who will get even better. I see no reason for singling him out for the generally poor start this season by the O line.

The one matter of skepticism I have about it is that "smashmouth" worked against the Rams....one of the worst run defenses in the league. It should have worked against Indy too, but Roman had other ideas.
But what happens when we face teams with better run defenses?
The Niners by the way tried to press the issue on the running game yesterday....but even the Rams could stuff eight in the box and force 4 straight three and outs for our offense.

Even good defenses like hawks give up about 3 yards per run. Be patient, get your 2-3 yards, wear down the D-line, and you may pop one off like gore did last night.
The pass attempts by colin is not opening up the run, so maybe we should go back to basics and allow the run to open up the pass...
English, Re: iupati, i like the guy and agree he is one of the best. But we cant afford to invest over 100 million just on the O-line... Look at broncos, they lost clady and their center, but they are still a dominant offense with people they plugged in. I know their power blocking is not good, but their pass offense scares teams from stacking the line, so they can manage big runs.
Look at Packers and patriots, they bring in lower draft picks and stick them in and they work fine. Saints had carl nicks and Jahri evans, two of the most dominant oG combo probably of all time, but they allowed nicks to walk.. Why? Because you c ant field a dominant team when you are spending >20% of your money on your O line. Saints and packs are great example of this, where most of their money is spent on their O (despite letting some key guys on offense go or unsigned) and they perennially struggle to win championship because their defense sucks.
Iupati, as dominant a run blocker he is, he flat out sucks on pass protection. So if u told me he is once in a generation type of player and dominant in all phase oft he games, i would not mind throwing chunk of change his way. But when he has chinks in his armor, i dont think its wise to tie up most of your money on him!
