Love the perspctive...BUT Jim Harbaugh is no Bill Walsh, Vic Fangio is no George Seifert and Greg Roman is certainly, no...well, pick any of the OC's during this era. Jim Tomsula is perhaps, the only coach on par with this coaching staff. Special teams blows, OL has regressed. Have we developed ONE WR in all these years? Crabtree is decent but has clear short comings, etc. Jim L with the linebackers? Many would say we don't utilize our LB's to the best of their abilities (playing down hill, always in coverage, zero pass rushing, etc.). But yes, these trends happen either way. This week should be telling though and we're about to find out...for the 3rd game in a row..what this team's character, heart and desire is all about. So far, they are Ohhhhh for 2!

History my friends always has great lessons :
For those of you that remember the Greatness of Mike Tyson , before he became a punch line and punching bag you will remember the Buster Douglas affect !
Tyson was one of the most feared boxers of any era , he would step into the ring with little to no fan fare , no robe , no posse , just the desire to take apart the other man . You literally could see the fear in the eyes of his opponent . They were beat before they entered the ring ! Until a 50-1 long shot named Buster Douglas stood in the ring with nothing to lose and took the mystique of invincibility away by knocking out the most feared man on the planet !
So what does this have to do with the 49ers ?
Seattle has shown the rest of the league that our Niners are mortal , if you stand up to the bully and out hit him , he will fall . Now , when Seattle does it the football world says " well they are Seattle , they are built to play the Niners , it was a home game and probably to be expected " but when Indy comes into our Back yard and kicks our ass up and down the field , it is our " Buster Douglas moment "
The Niners had the same look of confusion yesterday that I remember in the face of Tyson . Tyson had never been hit like that , he had never had a man stand in front of him and take his punch . In fact , Tyson caught Doulas with one of his crushing punches and down went the challenger ! Douglas then stood back up and instead of folding he delivered huge punch after punch and with in a few rounds left Tyson sprawled on the floor in Tokyo , just a shell of the feared fighter he once was. Tyson's career never recovered because his invincibility was gone . In yesterdays game Indy took the early lead but no one in the stadium including the Niners thought this would last . In fact the Niners delivered a drive of brute force as they ran the ball right down the throats of the Colts , surely the Colts would know their destiny and fold up and run away from the mighty Niners . Nope , Ahmad Bradshaw made sure of that , he ran like a man who wanted to send a message to the league , the colts and the Niners. He picked the Colts up off the floor and he delivered the counter punch to the the guy known for doing the punching.
The rest of this season will be a brutally hard fight every game , each team now will say " we know your not that tough ,we think were can knock your ass out as well " . Even the nobodies will want to say yeah we want a piece just so they can sit around and talk about how they beat the bully that one time.
Psychology is a VERY important thing in sports , if the Niners come out and get a win no matter how ugly it looks on Thursday against a team that is not intimidated , then the team may pull together and weather the storm of injuries and off field issues. A loss on Thursday could cause major problems for the organization . You could easily see the wheels come off the bus and end up with an extended losing streak with the niners looking at a 1-4 start with an additional loss against Houston.
The great Niner teams of the past , specifically the 1988 team , had to fight through major adversity to become Champions and several recent Superbowl winners have done the same , maybe this team will do it . Only time will tell how this team responds and maybe , just maybe this is what the Niners have needed , some adversity . If they can get healthy before the end of the season , get a wild card spot , get hot a the right time then maybe this has a happy ending.
Time to see what this team is made of !

I thought the Niners were Buster Douglas and the NFL was Evander Holyfield.

Comparing Andrew Luck and the colts to Buster Douglas? I'd say that's a bit of a stretch. lol

I watched Joe Montana win his first Superbowl in front of an old 20 inch color TV in the recreation room at Homan Hall at Fresno State with fifty other students who had gathered to watch the big game. I lived through the glory years. I lived through the good times and died just a little during the bad times. In the words of the radio announcer from a League of Their Own: "I have seen enough to know I have seen too much."
We're 1-2. We just lost to a team we shouldn't have lost too. We just didn't lose. We got our butts handed to us. Our best pass rusher is a drunk headed off to rehab. Our 2nd year QB looks like he's never seen, let alone thrown, a football before. Our best running back is peeved at his head coach. Our best linebacker got hurt and may miss a few games. Things are looking bad.
I'm here to tell you that I have seen this before. I have seen it all. And I'm here to tell you "don't worry." Things are going to be alright.
In 1982, I watched a Super Bowl defending champion get smashed the following season, shortened by a strike year, where they finished 3-6. "Big deal," you say? "They were on strike!" Well, to be brutally honest, most of the 49ers weren't. Joe Montana, Dwight Clark, Freddie Solomon and many others crossed those picket lines in defiance. End result? A bunch of replacement players smashed their collective teeth in. Montana couldn't complete a pass to save his life. Our defense was swiss cheese.
An even better example came in 1988. The 49ers stumbled out of the gate to a 6-5 start. This included a 9-3 loss to the RAIDERS, people. Think about it! A team comprised of Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, John Taylor, Roger Craig and so many others put up a measley three points against THE RAIDERS. Think that made the beat writers happy? There were whispers that Bill Walsh had "lost his touch" as head coach. There were "rumors" that he'd "lost the team."
That '88 team, by the way, would recover and go onto win the Super Bowl. It was Bill's final year. George Seifert replaced him and a year later the 49ers were back in the big game where they proceeded to absolutely DISMANTLE John Elway and the Denver Broncos in the most lopsided Super Bowl ever played.
Don't try to tell me that it was a different game back then. It wasn't. The rules were, for the most part, the same. A pigskin was a pigskin. The QB was still the QB.
The point I'm trying to make here is this: We've stumbled out of the gate to a 1-2 start, just as we did in 1981 when we won our first Super Bowl. And, just like 1981, we've looked terrible to boot.
Don't worry about it. Tomorrow is another day. Jim Harbaugh hasn't forgotten how to coach. Trust me when I tell you that he hasn't "lost the team." CK7 hasn't forgotten how to play the position of QB. Greg Roman is still a fine Offensive Coordinator.
We're 1-2. In the big scheme of things? It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter whether Seattle won or lost. We can't control what they do. So when a sportscaster makes a snide remark of referring to Seattle's QB as "the best QB in the NFC West," smile a bit and let it roll off your shoulders.
This is a long journey. We're just getting started. Smile. Today is a new day.
This is the best post I have read in a long time! Well done sir - and I wholeheartedly agree with your points.

Nice post, and it is way to early to panic. The thing is, unless you are in the locker room you cannot be positive that there are not deeper issues. But it is what it is, and we will find out over the next few games whether they can right the ship.

to panic. I've seen a lot of articles/posts saying the 49ers should trade for this or that. Yes our team looks like a hospital ward but we're built for the long haul. If it does not work out this year because of injuries/a brutal schedule to start the year we'll be ok. We have some really nice young players on this team. Kaep,Hunter,James,Lattimore,Vernon Davis,Crabtree,Patton,Baldwin,McDonald, and Harper are a good young core of offensive weapons. We still have a good offensive line and the defensive front seven is still relatively young and good. I really liked Eric Reid in college and he's even better then I thought he was. Where this team needs help is in the secondary. I don't expect to see Whitner,Brown or Namdi back next season and I also expect to see Carlos Rogers cut because his cap number is too high. We have a ton of picks in the 2014 draft and after looking at the cap numbers we should have double figure cap space after the Rogers cut. I also will fnd it very interesting to see if the 49ers bring back Gore at his current cap number. I haven't given up on the season but if things don't work out the future is still very bright.

You can almost argue as well that our best window to window was the first 2 seasons of the Harbaugh era. Who knows if we can afford Crabs. Boldin is only here for a year and will be looking for a new team. So that brings us back to Crabs and a bunch of nobody WR's again. Gore will be a year older, maybe even cut to make room in the cap. Kaep will probably get a BIG contract, depending on his 2013 performance of course. I don't even think Iaputi has been extended yet right? Harbaugh has 2 years left after this season. Roman/Fangio aren't gauranteed to come back as there is always offseason talk about other opportunities. We can draft and draft but its the veteran experience that gels teams together.
Seattle went and signed vet experience on their DL and they are punishing teams. IMHO, we need to try and win now because the windows for teams to win the SB are small.

I've come to the conclusion that with the hard NFL cap (which is a good thing btw) allows a team to peak for 2-3 years. A team has a very tight window to win the Super Bowl. Hate to say it but I think we are on a downward slide. We have to sign Kaep, Vernon, Crabtree, Iupati and Aldon. So if you think we are shallow with depth now, wait a few more years.
I think Baalke learned a very valuable and costly lesson in regards to last years draft. We simply do not have enough luxury to draft injured players and allow them time to heal. Love the Lattimore and Carridine picks but those could have been players on the roster that can help us now.
Last but not least, this current 49er team has an identity crisis. Not sure you can use the words "Colin Kaepernick" and "run first offense" in the same sentence. In my humble opinion, it's time to load up on receivers and get an OC that can spread the ball out ala Chip Kelly. This allows mismatches, gets the opposing defense out of the box and opens up lanes for Kaep and our RBs to exploit. This will NEVER happen with Roman as our offensive coordinator.
So Jed York and Harbaugh have some VERY tough decisions to make to right this ship.

Of the sixteen teams in the NFC, ten of them have records of 1-2 or worse ( Bucs, Skins, Giants, Vikings are 0-3). Two of the teams we beat to get to the Super Bowl last year (Falcons, Packers) are 1-2 as well. Unlike a lot of these teams we can cite specific reasons as to why we dropped two in a row (injuries, lack of running game, penalties). I think with our experience and resolve we can make adjustments and get into the playoffs.
I know a lot of people are freaking out about Aldon but I look at it this way; A. We now have a chance to see if it's the scheme or the player, if Lemon Man or someone else steps in and racks up sacks like Aldon it will give us more leverage come time to negotiate a contract. B. Aldon has been a beast but I bet you he drinks and smokes a LOT which means his conditioning is not at it's peak level, nor his mental capacity. If rehab treatment goes well we could very well see a BETTER Aldon in more ways than one once he returns.
Lastly I think Jim will get back to playing smash mouth football, and running the ball wearing a defense down, controling the clock and letting our defense do what they do best.
I'm sure Frank is fired up and ready to run all over the Rams, hell Demarco Murray put up 130 in the first half on those jokers and our oline and two times better than the Cowboys. LET'S GO NINERS! 2-2 after this week with a extra couple of days rest/prep for the next game.
