Yeah our run defense was a bit soft today. Murray had his way on us. Glad we don't have the Seahawks anytime soon, because Lynch would run us to death. Man the injury bug has hit us hard the past two seasons. Secondary not bad at all. I was surprised that both Dial and Tank were out today.

No we don't. We just need Dorsey and Bowman back.

Blame the NT. WTF? Do people even watch the game itself?

Yeah, I watch the opposing rb gash us in between the tackles for 5 yards a carry and control the TOP on offense. You cant see who was winning the trenches when the 49ers defense was on the field?
And you say Williams played great? Show me where he tied up two blockers for one time in the run game. Because that's what you need in 3-4 defense

That's amazing that the coaches would play the worse defender. Wilhoite didn't show any burst in the run game, but he is probably intellectually more ready than Borland. And to the point of NT, the guards were free to hit the second level and actually block the mlbs. You see Willis didn't have much more success than Wilhoite in stopping the run

First of all, Dallas has a GREAT O-line. Second, their running back is very good too. Third, Williams isn't on the field every play. Fourth, Williams isn't the only one responsible for keeping guys off the linebackers. Fifth, neither Dorsey nor Williams are classic, two-gap NT's.

Williams played bad & soft. We do need some reinforcements but hopefully people get better and step up.

It's true Dorsey did a better job of stuffing the run and occupying blockers than Williams did today. That said, in Williams' defense, this was his first start in almost a year. I'm willing to cut him some slack. Harbaugh wanted to go with the experience...and to get Ian back in the flow of things. He'll get better. Dial will get his reps, as will Tank. It's the first game of the season...don't get miffed because they didn't play. We won...that's all that really matters.

Clearly, people don't actually watch the game. If they did, they would know we were playing nickel for most of the game. The obvious plan was to not get beat by their passing game.

soo...should we change the thread title to "We need a more flexible defensive strategy" thread? Our run d was non existent. It was terrifying. If we weren't playing mr self destruct, this game would have had a much different complexion. I thought we came up some good bounces but we couldn't keep a run under 5 yards all game long. Time to ditch the 3-4. Dial didn't play at all. WHat up with that? Oh and yes we could use a real NT besides Williams.

The deal was that the 49ers were daring Dallas to run, they sold out to stop the pass and did so quite intelligently. Yes, they got yards on the ground, but what was the end result? I do think the run defense needs work certainly, the whole defense needs work but they did what they set out to do in terms of controlling the Cowboy's passing offense.
