So it seems with the addition of Harper to groom in an H-Back role, we have a new bubble guy in Celek. Let's try and figure out who our 53 will be after the PUP guys return.

PUP/Designated IR Guys
Crabtree
Manningham
Dial
Carradine
Wright

Returning from Suspension
Dobbs

Possible/Pending Signee
Marecic

On the Bubble (in bold)

OFFENSE
Quarterbacks (3): Colin Kaepernick, Colt McCoy, B.J. Daniels
Running backs/fullback (5): Frank Gore, Kendall Hunter, LaMichael James, Anthony Dixon, Bruce Miller
Wide receivers (5): Anquan Boldin, Kyle Williams, Marlon Moore, Quinton Patton, Jon Baldwin
Tight ends (3): Vernon Davis, Vance McDonald, Garrett Celek, Chris Harper
Offensive linemen (8): Joe Staley, Mike Iupati, Jonathan Goodwin, Alex Boone, Anthony Davis, Adam Snyder, Daniel Kilgore, Joe Looney

DEFENSE
Defensive linemen (6): Justin Smith, Ray McDonald, Ian Williams, Glenn Dorsey, Will Tukuafu, Tony Jerod-Eddie
Outside linebackers (5): Aldon Smith, Ahmad Brooks, Corey Lemonier, Dan Skuta
Inside linebackers (5): Patrick Willis, NaVorro Bowman, Michael Wilhoite, Nick Moody, Nate Stupar
Cornerbacks (5): Carlos Rogers, Tarell Brown, Nnamdi Asomugha, Tramaine Brock, Perrish Cox
Safeties (5): Donte Whitner, Eric Reid, Craig Dahl, C.J. Spillman, Bubba Ventrone

SPECIALISTS
Kicker: Phil Dawson
Punter: Andy Lee
Long snapper: Kevin McDermott

My guess is that out of the guys eligible to return from PUP, Wright will remain on it. I think he's insurance should a major (IR type) injury occur to one of the other guys at the position. I could see a scenario where Dial and/or Tank are kept on IR because either they believe a guy is not fully healed (Tank) or a guy is not better or more prepared than his replacement (Dial). This is how I think it plays out given our current circumstances...

Prior to week 1:
Marecic is brought in and Stupar is released.

After week 1:
Dobbs returns from suspension and Jerod-Eddie (or Tuk) is released.

After week 6:
Mario returns from injury and Ventrone is released.
Tank (or Dial) returns from injury and Tukuafu (or Jerod-Eddie) is released.
If we choose to activate both Tank and Dial then Dobbs will be released.
Crabtree is moved to the 53 and either Baldwin, Celek, or Harper is released.

Any other guesses?
I don't think kyle Williams job is safe either. Any we not named boldin or patton could be in jeopardy. I agree celek is expendable. Don't really see how he fits our offense especially with Harper now.

Yeah, I thought about highlighting Williams too. But really, is Manningham safe either? His injury was pretty significant and he brings no ST value. He did look good with Kap last year, but there are definitely still some questions there.

I agree with you about Wright, Tank and Dial. I think they're all stashed for the year unless injuries force a change. I think Tukuafu is more likely to get axed than Jerrod-Eddy. That's just gut based on what I saw in the summer and what the beat writers are saying (and I think Tukuafu's also closer to qualifying for a vet contract, and they seem to want them younger if they're not starting).

Marecic, might still come on board, but since they've just added Harper to develop into the h-back role, we may have Marecic on hold.

Six to nine weeks down the road, injuries will probably determine who goes when Mario and Crabs are ready. But I think you're right to think that if Harper shows signs of developing well, Celek might be one of the ones to go.

I don't think at this point that Stupar gets cut. He earned his way onto the roster with his play, plus he's cheap, and even though we have too may ILB's, I think he'll remain as a special teamer. I think Ventrone is in more danger - at least through this week. As a vested vet his $880k salary is guaranteed if he's on the roster this Sunday. If they keep him through Sunday, why would they dump him later. Evidently Seely knows something about how he can contribute on special teams that we haven't seen because he was injured most of the summer. We'll see.

Nice feedback. Ventrone was quite a headscratcher. I have a feeling that when they sit in a room to decide who stays and who goes, Seely has some say in a couple of the guys he wants. Harbs seems to allow a couple exclusive ST guys for Seely to keep. It will be interesting because many of the guys coming back have little to no ST value.
By the time Crabs is healthy we will have another WR hurt.

Unless Ventrone is becomes a st ace his ass should be gone.
Amp, you probably won't get a lot of posts as SanDiego put 2 threads up on when Dial and Carradine would come back and then when Manningam and Crabtree and there was a lot of discussion in there. I also made a poll on the subject. I think people are kind of talked out on the subject. Your post is very organized and easy to read though.

I will answer though. I think we have to wait and see. We did a lot of predicting but no way we know how everyone is playing at that time and for all we know could be another injury or 2 which could make things simpler. I will say this 1. I don't think Marecic will be joining us, I think he would have by now. I could be wrong though. 2. Don't see Dixon as one of the guys getting cut maybe even if we sign Marecic. 3. I don't see Baldwin going anywhere. We will get him on the jugs machine and see how he does next offseason/pre-season. He is under contract for next year. I think we will see what he has first but he could be inactive some games this year. 4. I think Ventrone is here to stay and if he wasn't cut for adding Harper he won't get cut when Dobbs gets comes back because that will mean we will have to pay his entire 880k salary for one week of work. If he is on the roster game 1 he will likely be on the team all year. 5. I don't think Celek gets cut until Harper is ready but I don't see Harper getting cut. I think we see more of a future for him than Celek. 6. I don't think we liked having 5 OLBs. 3 last year wasn't enough, 4 is perfect. Just like I don't think we want 5 ILBs. Stupar impressed but I could see him getting cut. 7. I think the most likely to go when Dobbs gets back is TJE or Tukuafu. Tukuafu is a lot older and hasn't gotten any better in 3 years. I think it's time to move on and he is also a FA after this year. That being said if Dial or Carradine would be back the guy left (besides Dobbs) would likely be gone. If both come back then Dobbs could be gone too. With that being said don't see both coming back and keep in mind these guys haven't practiced or played at all so hard to believe they will come back late in the season and kick Dobbs out of a job. Tukuafu or TJE possibly, Dobbs is less likely.

So if you made me guess right now. No Marecic. When Dobbs comes back TJE or Tukuafu. When Manningham comes back we keep 6 WRs or if someone isn't doing well they could get cut (Williams or Moore). I think we keep 6, Baldwin could be inactive then and we cut Stupar. Ventrone is likely to stay as he's Seelys ST man I guess. I would have cut him... doubt he's worth 880k, at least hasn't done anything on ST or at S in the preseason. If he isn't doing well on ST maybe he gets cut but I'd say much more likely he gets cut later in the year. Doesn't make sense to cut the guy after week 1 or 6 (PUP) when we have to pay him all 880k anyways if he is on the roster week 1. Then when Crabtree comes back no way we keep 7 WRs. If we cut a WR when Manningham comes back we go with 6 WRs and cut someone from another spot when Crabtree gets back. Possibly Celek if Harper is ready (end of the year). If we cut another spot when Manningham comes back like I said we would have 7 wrs and that wont happen. We will cut whoever is doing the worst between Manningham, Williams, Moore IMO. Keep in mind all 3 are FAs after this year so if we would cut them really late in the season when Crabtree came back not a big deal since they'd probably be gone in a few games anyways. If this seems confusing it's because it is. Like I said we will have to wait and see how everyone is playing. We are just predicting now and that's all we can do.

Gore, thanks for the reply. The point of this thread was to organize the subject into one space. Plus most posters ignore SD, so those threads are largely irrelevant.

That being said, I think it's an interesting and unique subject since we have so many guys coming back. I think you make a good point about Marecic. The fact they haven't signed him yet is curious. Maybe They are discussing it still. You also make a good point about Ventrone and his salary. Not sure why the staff is enamored but I guess we'll find out if he doesn't get cut early.

Your guess is as good as any (I guess)

One thing tho, what to do with MM if Moore/Patton/Williams all step up and are playing really well....
