Preseason 2013 - Week 3: Thoughts after rewatching the game...

While 1st round picks always have high exceptions, he was still the 26th pick and 3rd WR taken. He still has the measurable's to be a top wr and if he can develop here a Patton/Baldwin combo could be explosive for this team and could make Crabtree expendable.

Well...to be fair, the comparison was never Jon Baldwin=Calvin Johnson. However, many said he had physical tools that were comparable to Johnson....tall, strong, great hands, and speed (tho not ridiculous CJ speed).

When Baldwin was selected he was billed as a WR with ALL the tools....and he just wasn't the guy the fans thought they were getting. That doesn't mean that he can't be a good player...it just means you have to adjust your expectations and see him as the player he is. As I see him now he is a HUGE upgrade from AJ.

The bad thing about McCoy is that he gets the jitters pretty fast in the pocket and doesnt keep his eyes up to see the receivers when he scrambles. He missed some pretty easy check downs yesterday.

And LOL at people still not including Moore in their receiver roster, dude isnt going anywhere so get used to writing his name on the WR depth chart.

Yeah....I was thinking the same thing last night....With Crab and Manningham on the PUP, I'm thinkin'...

Boldin
Moore
Williams
Patton
Baldwin

and if they keep a 6th its a battle between Collie, Hall, and Osgood (mostly as special teamer).

Marvin, have you keyed in on the backup S's at all? I know it's so hard with a regular broadcast. Who do you like... Robinson, Thomas, Ventrone or go with 4 guys. Spillman and Dahl can backup both spots so I wouldn't have a problem with 4 if they don't think any of those 3 are worthy of a spot.

I haven't rewatched it yet but you guys touched on everything. Justin looked like his 2011 version. The guy is just chomping at the bit to get back to regular season play. Like I figured Patton and McDonald would come in day 1 and contribute; if McDonald can work on his hands won't be long before he replaced Walker to the fullest. By the end of the year should be able to do most of the things Walker did. I was happy with the Baldwin trade. Think we got the better end of the deal but hopefully it works out for both players. We didn't have any more time for Jenkins, they do. I said after last pre-season watch out for Wilhoite he looked good and said he had a chance to make the team next year. He looks awesome. Like I said last week Wilhoite is a lock for 3 and Moody will be 4. BJ Daniels has show more in 2 drives then Tolzien did in 3 pre seasons. He is making throws that Tolzien can't and he's leading TD drives which Tolzien really didn't do. Can't wait until Dial and Carradine are at full strength. Hopefully they play well and boot Dobbs and especially Tukuafu off the roster. A few pre seasons ago I keyed in on Tukuafu and he showed a lot of hustle; seems to half ass it out there now. Maybe he's happy to have made it in the nfl... maybe his spot is secure so he isn't worried as much as he should be. Either way hopefully between Dial, Carradine and a draft pick next year we won't have to worry about re-signing Demarcus or Will.

I like Robinson, but I have a feeling it'll be Ventrone or just 4 guys.

What makes these predictions harder is that the team will go heavy at a few positions because they will have guys targetted for Special Teams for Sealy. Could be a LB, a WR, a Safety....could be any position...so hard to say how many they keep.

The guys that are in that argument are guys like Osgood, Moody, Skuta, Ventrone...and on some level Anthony Dixon.
Am I the only one who wants Hawkins to make the team? The second penalty was stupid but it's not like it's gonna happen every single time he makes a play. It's something he can change. LMJ hasn't looked very good returning this preseason.

Agreed, after last night I would bank on those 5 as locks and Im also starting to think they wont keep another receiver and would keep Gray as the 4th TE. However if they do keep another WR, it should be Hawkins even though he was a dumba$$ last night. We are good in the slot already so that bumps Hall and Collie down a peg, Osgood isnt a natural receiver and Hawkins has more athleticism than any of them... if only he had a brain too.

I think he didn't help himself last night with the penalties, but he's not gonna make the team. There just aren't enough roster spots.

LMJ will be fine...but Cox can also return kicks and it looks like they were trying Patton there as well.

I think Gray will go to the PS. I can't see them keeping 4 TEs on the 53.

If they keep 6 WR's I hope he stays over Collie or Hall. When Manningham returns they can cut Hawkins.
Solid post Marv.

QB's: It looked like Kap needed the time and extra passes to get into his rhythm. Once in his zone, he lit it up.
I was thinking he was auditioning McCoy for prospective buyers. After last night, the asking price went up.
Daniels - WOW! He's a keeper for sure.

RB: Great to see Hunter back, he looked strong and FAST!
Dixon, who I've been very critical of in the past, has really stepped up tis off season and I think he definitely makes the team
Lattimore had an off day. I'm not worried, he be back in form soon.

WR: Moore seems like an understudy of Boldin. I really like his hands and toughness.
How `Bout that Patton! Yes sir, he played well. Good hands.
Baldwin - didn't see enough to have a definite opinion but he has the size to help out once he learns the play book.

TE: McDonald is going to be a big contributor this season. He blocked very well last night.

OL: They haven't really clicked on a consistent basis. That will come soon, no worries.

DL: Seeing Justin back in form brought a big smile to my face. Ray Mac, Dorsey, Ian all played well
I can't recall seeing Dobbs contribute. How did he do?

LB: Wilhoite has really impressed.
Brooks had a hell of a game.

DB: Reid looks a lot more comfortable. I know he'll make some rookie mistakes as the season progresses BUT he has an incredible upside.
Aso - He really makes contact at the line of scrimmage. Great pick up and we'll need his game all season long.
Cox had an off game. IMO, has trouble w/taller receivers.

ST: You gotta give it up for Dawson - he's solid gold.

The Stupid Award goes to - Hawkins. What a jackass! Hopefully he can get a Singletary moment from VD and get his head on right. The guy seems to have real potential.

The Scumbag Award goes to Looney. Inexcusable!

Thanks Marvin. Exactly, some of these guys aren't necessarily making it based solely on their play at their position. We might keep guys due to ST that we wouldn't keep if they didn't play ST. Like you said too some positions they keep more of then they would have to just based on ST alone.
Thoughts after watching the game: Baldwin had more catch yesterday than AJ Jenkins did the whole season.

I feel real good about this game from start to finish. We will be forced to cut some real talented players this year, especially at linebacker. We're just flush with talent inside and outside. Our third string inside linebackers could probably start for some teams at this point, like, say, uh, da Raiders?

We will also be forced to cut loose a good RB or maybe even two. Hate to see it. But there's just too much talent on this team?

I have to keep reminding myself that it's just preseason and this game means absolutely ZILCH.

But I liked the way we looked -- on both sides of the ball.

My call is Hawk makes the team as a return specialist -- even with the boneheaded penalties.

Jenkins did have some catches and a TD last preseason.

Just comparing AJ's "catchless (reg)season" with Baldwin's 2 from yesterday.

Isn't Lattimore on the NFI list?
