They gave Lockette an opportunity, he just didn't do enough with it.

But, getting cut because of Wallace ?! That is just nuts. You do know that Wallace was McCoy's back-up right ?! LOL.

I wouldn't say it's because of Wallace. All it tells me is Lockette was going to get cut next week anyway, along with 20+ other players.

For those with the "Wallace was backup to McCoy in Cleveland" = "McCoy was better": McCoy was the young QB they wanted to find out about, the team had no delusions of winning a SB, Wallace never got an opportunity to win the starting job even though he looked better in preseason since Colt was anointed starter.

McCoy and Wallace are actually pretty similar players with one difference - Wallace has an NFL quality arm. You're better off with Wallace, even though the best move is still to work a trade for a Cousins or a Foles - the future is now, and if Kap goes down, NONE of the current options are gonna keep the boat afloat more than a game or two.

PS - Wallace was pissed that he didn't get a chance to win the starting job, and he and Colt aren't the best of friends, so that should be an interesting dynamic.

here is one take on the signing

49ers signed QB Seneca Wallace, formerly of the Saints.

Wallace, 33, was cut by the Saints Monday and immediately drew interest from the Niners. Colt McCoy and Scott Tolzien have struggled throughout the preseason, combining for three interceptions and zero touchdowns. Rookie B.J. Daniels is the other signal caller on the roster behind Colin Kaepernick, but he's nowhere close to being ready. Wallace is no lock to make the roster.

He makes everyone else look inferior. Ha

And LOL @ people thinking Wallace will be pushing Tolzien or McCoy. Wallace hasn't even seen our playbook yet!

Wonderful...and Lockette is one of CK's best friends. This should get interesting.

They signed Wallace in time to play this Sunday. If he looks crappier than the other three, they'll probably go with youth and cut him.

another opinion

Seneca Wallace signs contract with San Francisco 49ers

Wallace isn't guaranteed to push McCoy off the roster, but this is a sign that the team is uneasy about its veteran insurance behind Colin Kaepernick. Although coach Jim Harbaugh has raved about seventh-round draft pick B.J. Daniels, the rookie is better suited for the developmental role of third quarterback.

To be fair buck, that's not much of an opinion... it's pretty much the fact of the matter...

Tolzien is toast, McCoy vs. Wallace as primary backup, and Daniels as developmental #3 with some WR/RB contribution... if anything other than that happens, it would be unexpected.
Out will go McCoy. The bigger question is, who's our backup?

I wasn't being fair?

I did not mean to imply anything negative.
