I am sure most of you are aware there is a huge on-going heated debate about whether AJ Jenkins will be a bust and even cut. There has already been a poll done on how much more time we should give him to prove himself.

What I thought might be interesting to see is which WRs will make the 53-man roster. Assuming the 9ers are going to follow the same model as last year by keeping 6 WRs on the roster and assuming 3 of the spots have already been filled, namely Anquan, Kyle and Mario (being able to come back by the start of the season), which 3 WRs do you think 1) should and 2) will make the roster ? Initially, I was going to do a poll, but there are really just too many combinations. The list of the remaining receivers to pick from are as follows :

  • Marlon Moore
  • Ricardo Lockette
  • AJ Jenkins
  • Quinton Patton
  • Kassim Osgood
  • Chuck Jacobs
  • Chad Hall
  • Charly Martin

Should

My pick are as follows :

  • Marlon Moore
  • Ricardo Lockette
  • Chad Hall (simply because he has experience plus Vernon's positive comments)

Quinton Patton is a rookie and we can still give him a little more time. I also like Chuck Jacobs, this guy seems to be an instinctual catcher, he could well be a dark horse. Kassim Osgood will probably just stick with the special teams on kick recovery.

Will

My pick are as follows :

  • Marlon Moore
  • Ricardo Lockette
  • AJ Jenkins (simply because I feel is his 1st round pick draft status, Baalke and Harbaugh will give him his very last chance to prove himself before they give up on him as opposed to outright preseason performance)

So, which are your 3 ?
Here is my take:

Locks:
Boldin, Jenkins, Williams, Patton, Lockette, Manningham (Unless he goes to PUP then Moore or Osgood make it as ST guy)

PS:
Moore, Hall (Are both eligible? If one isn't than Chuck Jacobs has a shot at it.)

If I had to pick best shot to make team that isn't one of the main 6 I would say Moore then Hall, then Osgood.

"Quinton Patton is a rookie and we can still give him a little more time."

Absolutely, as long as is not as long as AJ Jenkins with no improvements, it will be alright.

the only three not injured
For what it's worth Marlon Moore is a much better WR than Osgood.

And how do we know that Jenkins hasn't made progress?

Boldin will be the starting Z/flanker, and move into the slot in 3 reciever formations

Williams will win the job as the X/splitend (I expect Vern will get some time here also)

Jenkins will rotate in as first off the bench

Moore will be the #4, maybe even the #3, active on game days as a ST gunner

Lockette will make the 53, but could lose his spot when Manningham comes back

Patton makes the 53, but is basicly red shirted, In-active on game days unless someone gets dinged up

* Ive been on the Jenkins Jalopy since we drafted him, but may be jumping off soon

We will continue to track his performance day by day including the 4 preseason games.

Actually, I have already factored in Mario. The locks will be Anquan, Mario and Kyle. I guess what you are saying is your picks for the remaining 3 spots are Jenkins, Moore and Lockette. I am basing it on a WR quota of 6 just like last year's model. But, if you think Patton will be red-shirted and inactive, we will exceed the 6 spots.

Quinton Patton will make the 53-man roster, unless he is placed on PUP.

In fact, I would go so far as to say that he is a lock.
Do we even have 3 WR's left?

I am not sure. It is very early in process of evaluation. I am going to wait.

In fact, I am not even sure how many wide receivers will make the team.
