49ers sign Punter Colin Schmidt

So this is why the re-negotiated Justin Smith's contract.

Good work harbaalkrath.
This is more about the competition about Punt Returner then Punter. Those guys are going to need a lot of reps this training camp and preseason. no need to over work Lee's leg for that...

actually some think brooks can easily be replaced by a rookie

easily? I never said easily, but yes it will happen either next off season or the following, and when it does I want an apology thread. You can include a picture of your new lemo jersey.

Some of you are such homers but it's no suprise, we all are. I bet if goldson stayed and brooks got traded or cut you would be saying the opposite. Brooks is overrated goldson is the best

the best lolb in the league!

It's about time. That Andy Lee dude sucks. Got skinnier legs than Kaepernick.

"Schmidt could also give placekicker Phil Dawson, 38, a breather this summer: He handled kickoff duties in college and had 34 touchbacks in 2012."

The San Francisco 49ers have signed punter Colton Schmidt to a three-year deal.

Schmidt (5-11, 220) joins the 49ers as an undrafted free agent from the University of California, Davis. He finished his collegiate career with 235 punts for 9,664 yards and a school record 41.1 gross punting average. He also served as the team's kickoff specialist with 34 of his 62 kickoffs resulting in touchbacks.

A native of Bakersfield, CA, Schmidt capped off his Aggies career, in 2012, by surpassing his previous single-season school record of a 42.3 average with a 44.5 gross punting average, earning First-Team All-Big Sky Conference. He was also selected Second-Team All-Great West Conference following his sophomore and junior seasons.

Why three years though? Anyone know? He's just going to be released after training camp.

What's going on with this picture
It is for 2 reasons.

1. Like Hitman49 said it is about ramping up the returners without unnecessarily overworking Lee.
2. It is a bout a Superbowl runner securing very very good talent should an injury happen to Lee like what happened to other 9ers last year and this year, which is potentially a killer of Superbowls.

Excellent job by the staff.

I guess the minimum for all un-drafted rookies is 3 years, and is only guaranteed if they make the 53 man roster

O.k., that makes sense. Thank you.
