June Minicamp Thread/News: 11-13 June

http://blog.sfgate.com/49ers/2013/06/13/final-notes-from-the-final-49ers-minicamp-practice/

49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick ended the 49ers' off-season program for veterans with a flourish, completing four passes of 15 yards or more. It ended the last day of mandatory minicamp for the team. Rookies still have one more week before they are dismissed until the start of training camp at the end of July."Colin has been on it all off-season," coach Jim Harbaugh said. "That period especially was outstanding."Highlights of practice included an nice catch by rookie tight end Vance McDonald on a ball thrown behind him. He also caught a few seam routes. "We have to have more Vance McDonald birthdays," Harbaugh said. McDonald turned 23 on Thursday. The downer of the day was the anterior cruciate tear by wide receiver Brandon Carswell, the wide receiver from Milipitas, who signed on Wednesday. Carswell sustained the injury moments after getting onto the field for his practice. Carswell, who went to USC, was on the Raiders' practice squad last season. It leaves a spot open for a wide receiver. The 49ers did work out veteran Austin Collie Thursday, but did not immediately sign him. Collie tore his patella tendon seven months ago according to Harbaugh. He also has sustained three concussions in his career. In other news, wide receiver Anquan Boldin was the sidelines for the last team period and rookie safety Eric Reid did not participate in team drills. Harbaugh said Boldin had done enough work and he wanted to see the younger receivers. Reid has an undisclosed minor injury.Harbaugh was also asked to address Craig Dahl's assertion on Wednesday that the Rams knew when the 49ers were going to run or pass by their formations and personnel. Harbaugh said the team was aware of the issue after the first game, a 24-24 tie on Nov. 11. The coaching staff then "adjusted" according to Harbaugh.Harbaugh said he will be taking his annual church visit to Peru before the team opens summer training camp

The 49ers saved their best day of minicamp for last.

Colin Kaepernick looked sharp and so did many of his receivers. On the last day of a three-day minicamp, the 49ers quarterback finished the day with five consecutive completions.

Kaepernick also called his own number during a team period mid-practice and scored a 50-yard rushing touchdown on a "Pistol" running play.

The highlight reception was turned in from second-year wideout A.J. Jenkins. The 6-foot wideout sprawled out over the middle of the field to catch a rifled pass from the 49ers starting quarterback.

Jenkins capped an impressive minicamp with the highlight play of the day. The former first-round pick, however, wasn't alone in making big-time receptions. Marlon Moore, Vance McDonald andRicardo Lockette all made leaping catches on the day.

It caught the eye of Jim Harbaugh.

"I really liked the practice today and the entire offseason," the 49ers coach said. "It was a good effort by our team. I like our team and I like where we're at right now."

Kaepernick solidified a hard-working offseason with a throwing clinic to close practice.

"He's been on it all offseason," Harbaugh said. "That period especially was outstanding."

The final day of minicamp also included three sensational catches by San Francisco's second-round pick, McDonald. It also happened to be the rookie tight end's birthday.

McDonald caught a deep crossing route from Kaepernick on a ball that was slightly behind, but was able to adjust his body in the air to catch the ball 20 yards downfield. Later, the rookie tight end caught a deep go route from Kaepernick and later cradled a sideline pass from Colt McCoy into his body with one arm.

After practice, Harbaugh awarded 31 certificates to players who attended every practice and weight lifting session of the offseason. The 49ers coach and All-Pro linebacker Patrick Willis spoke to the group to close out the session. Veterans are off for the next month; rookies will complete a minicamp next week to round out their offseason work.

Minicamp Notes-Kyle Williams joined the punt return drills to work on his ball-catching skills. Williams joined Perrish Cox,LaMichael James, Chad Hall, B.J. Daniels and Quinton Patton in the punt return drill.

-Anquan Boldin did not participate in team drills. Harbaugh said the veteran had done enough and that he wanted to evaluate the team's young receivers on the final day of camp.

-Trenton Robinson lined up at free safety with the first-team defense next to Donte Whitner. Eric Reid was nursing a minor injury and skipped his turn in the free safety rotation, according to Harbaugh.

-Scott Tolzien was picked off twice on back-to-back plays. NaVorro Bowman and Nnamdi Asomugha came up with turnovers in the team period. Bowman picked off a screen pass intended for Daniels; Asomugha read a post route intended for Patton.

-Darcel McBath intercepted Kaepernick in a team period. The starting quarterback was rolling to his left and decided to aim downfield for Hall as a last-ditch attempt, but found a leaping McBath instead.

-Asomugha lost contain on undrafted wideout Chuck Jacobs later in a team period. The rookie receiver ran free down the right sideline to catch a 50-yard touchdown from Daniels to beat the broken coverage.
Seems like Vance McDonald is gonna be a ramming beast when he catches the ball.

Tolzien needs to prove he still deserves to be a backup because if Colt shows he can be a reliable no.2, and B.J. Daniels has a good camp, then Tolzien is the odd man out.

A.J. is gay?

As long as he can catch the ball and block fairly well I could care less

what's with all this "stroking"... catching balls, cock-block... Culliver's going to trip hard if he reads into this thread
Harbaugh said 31 players earned perfect attendance certificates (which also came with t-shirts, but not Bee t-shirts).
"It's a neat thing. You think back to when you were in school and the last day of school you get a perfect attendance certificate. And that's what this is. It says something nice about you. You go put it up at home, put it in a little frame. Put it on the wall. It says something nice about you. Kids look at it and it'll be extra motivation for them to attend all their classes. And it's a high criteria. It's a very cruel, very relentless criteria. It's perfection. It's every practice, every meeting, every weight workout with no excuse. You could have a great excuse. But, if you weren't there perfect then you don't get a sticker--certificate, and a T-shirt."

Awesome and hilarious at the same time. That's Harbaugh. "But, if you weren't there perfect then you don't get a sticker--certificate, and a T-shirt." That's just priceless.

Yeah, that's great news about McDonald being able to make leaping off-balance catches with his hands - just what the team needs out the TE opposite Davis - a tall-sure-handed monster to go to in the red zone.

And, if you remember, that was the main concern of the doubters - his hands.

And you're right - Tolzien looks like he may be in trouble. McCoy looks like an Alex Smith clone and Daniels seems like he can do it all with more speed.

Agreed...so far, starting to rethink my 53. LOL. That said, things are usually very different when the pads cme on and the defense can hit and we're talking about real pre season games. So we'll see...
I'm very glad to learn McDonald has good hands after all. I'm glad Jenkins is starting to produce. Reid seems like he's fitting in very well.

So far, so good!

I can see this happening.
If Osgood makes the roster, our redzone offense should be pretty hard to stop. Two 6'5 targets, plus VD and Boldin, do you defend the run or the pass?

I don't think they'd use Osgood in the redzone. Most likely it'd be a disguised look with extra TE's since Vance McDonald is 6'5. With a powerhouse goal-line set featuring receiving options of Vernon, McDonald, and Boldin -- now that's one it's hard to say whether it's a run or a pass because all three can be monsters in both situations.

Daniels' versatility is definitely earning him brownie points. Tolzien isn't bad, but at this point, if he is not showing enough improvement, the younger guy who has a higher ceiling and more ability to contribute in various positions will make the decision all too easy to cut Scottie.
