I really don't know what to think about this move. What in Mangini's experience or football knowledge makes him a TE coach? Maybe I just don't get it, but in Harbaalke I (still) trust.

VD was always very good but now he's one of the best, Vance came in not being much of a blocker but that's all he did this year...and he did a good job. Delanie Walker improved his blocking under Reggie Davis...same goes for Celek. What Coach Davis lacks in is his ability to really develop a TE to be a pass catcher. So moving him to the O-Line could be the best move for him, and gives the Tight Ends a fresh approach to elevate their receiving skills.
at this point, id just call him above average in run blocking from what ive seen

Fair enough. I personally have been impressed. The few times he's been asked to stay in and pass block also it's hard to tell he's not an O-Lineman.

Well..... at least Mangini can tell Mac and Davis what won't work on a defender.
But.... that didn't really work so well with Roman.

Well Mangini may be contributing more so as a mental coach. Not so much technique but on how to attack different defenses and types of players guarding them.
The one thing we could argue here is that Mangini was just given "replay assistant" duties on game days and that in reality he has spent the past year studying our TEs and developing an approach to coaching them.
I may giving Baalke/Harbaugh too much credit by saying their thinking that far in advance but we can only hope.

Maybe Mangini can put on some glasses and conduct practices as Matt Foley.

He should be put in charge of the secondary! He's a defensive minded guy and that is where our weakness is.

It's the Management's way of saying ..
"Hey Eric, you f**ked up our offense last year and probably cost us a title, but we don't want a media circus around here on how we blew it by bringing you in, so we'll quietly make you tight ends coach. We want you to feel insulted, so you quit and we don't have to pay you."

He's a solid football guy, I can see him being an asset on the offensive side of the ball
hopefully this doesn't blow up in Harbaughs face like it did Andy Reid, when he made offensive line coach Juan Castillo the defensive coordinator of the Philadelphia eagles ...that was the move that sealed Reid's fate , now if the offense struggles, this move will be questioned? , but I'm sure Roman wont mind if Mangini takes the heat for a sputtering offense ...but this move can make or break Harbaugh

Yeah .... if the offense starts out in the SAME place it was last season without any progress at WR or QB, the natives will really start to get restless.
that's for sure ... there will be very little patience from the fan base

I'm
49er TEs have been weak at recognizing defenses and finding open areas in a zone. Also adjusting routes to be the "hot read" so Kaepernick can go to them quickly when under a blitz. I don't see anything in Mangini's background that suggests he can teach this. He may be able to do it but we won't know until the season starts.
This offense needs some new thinking if it is to become more than just Stanford Part 2. I don't see how Mangini would play in that. Let's hope he has more than we have seen so far.

Yeah, the offense looked exactly like it did the year prior WITH Mangini in the booth (with less or no fly sweeps, throw backs to VD, seam routes and wheel routes...and certainly no check-downs). So Mangini to a TE position?
Are we just keeping him on staff as a contigency plan for losing Roman at some point?
