Odds are against him, it will take an incredible amount of work to make it on the roster... Hopefully he does but he's a long shot
This. By the time he rolls in next off season, he'll have had 2 years in OUR system. Many of our players don't make the jump until year 2, naturally...come late bloomers like Brock, Cox, etc. Next off season should be pretty telling for him/us. Either way, I'm sure he's helping to develop our OT's very quickly with that bull rush.

I figured it would only be a matter of time before NC showed up, just as he knew it would only be a matter of time before i showed up here

All I'm expecting is him making the roster and contributing on special teams next year.
I guess the PS is an option two years in a row. But I get the feeling it's either all or nothing. We'll see.

As NC and CC both noted , long odds, esp for a guy who NEVER played football, (and I don't mean to denigrate rugby, also a tough sport), but add onto that a season ending injury and Okoye's chances of making the roster next yr look to me to be mighty slim. You hate to give up on a guy like that, but he is competing with the best of the best who have anywhere from 10 -13 yrs experience on him, all beginning at the lowest levels and learning all the tricks of the trade as they go along in H.S. and then college. I bet you couldn't even get odds in Vegas on him, and that is truly a shame. In the end, simple as football seems for all of us, when you get to h.s. from grade school, there is a huge leap. H.S. to college another massive leap. And then college to pros, a Quantum leap. Actually his making it was a leap alright. A leap of faith. And then the next question becomes just exactly how long are you going to keep that slot for a potential talent open, when all the underpinnings, all the 12-15 yrs of experience just aren't there. I loved the pick. In retrospect, I think we were asking too much of him. Great guy , would love to see him out there, but the injury with the loss of practice time...that probably was the nail in the coffin.

Now that we're truly thinking about next year, let the speculation begin!
I'm thinking he gets a spot next year as a backup pass-situation guy and plays special teams. He looked half-decent in preseason and I'm sure he made some gains after a year of NFL practices. We should know if the project has been a success after next offseason.
But, just so I can set the speculation bar as low...or as high as it can go: He will be the next great LT. With that size/speed combination, and an Oxford caliber intellect, he will be the JJ Watt of offensive tackles!!

Cept he doesn't take offensive snaps, and when asked recently Fangio said "He's definitely a defense guy".

Isn't he being groomed as an O lineman now?

it's pretty obvious that he has the body of an OT, and he moves like an OT. the only effective move he can do on defense is wide-end bull rush. he's way, way too high cut for interior d-line play, and his lower body is not flexible and agile enough to make you think you're looking at calais campbell.
if it was up to me, i'd start repping him at right tackle during the off season. plus, the guy is smart enough to learn o-line play.

Given his size and weight, he is VERY athletic. It would be a waste to use these attributes at the O-Line, imho.

if you didn't grow up with a football-coach father, think about how little football know-how you had that first year you played--whether it was pee-wee or high school. really. remember? the only thing i had a sense of were defensive pursuit angles and and a couple white-guy moves carrying the ball; all stuff learned in the school yard. blocking? shedding a block? tackling? proper hand placement while catching? back peddling? schemes? assignments? pretty clueless on all that. coaches had to show me, one spoonful at a time.
that's where okoye was a year ago. being smart and having an adult mind, he's probably like a high school varsity player now: comfortable with the basics, and wanting to prove himself. he's an extraordinarily powerful man who can probably find find a spot by next fall. not a joke.

I would have activated him instead of Purcell, what we got to lose

true. especially since purcell isn't much of a 5-tech, but okoye could push a double team into the pocket in 4 seconds. then again, okoye is a detriment when run against; he just can't get low enough. that's why he should be an OT.

Can we just move on from him and Purcell? I think we have enough problems without worrying about converting him. I am going to be pissed if Purcell gets backup duty instead of Carradine or Dial. Heck TJE should be gone in a few weeks (FA) and shouldn't be getting the nod over either of those guys either. Should be Carradine, Dial, Smith the entire game.

Why is TJE going to be gone in a few weeks?
