Yeah, it's too bad that word of them considering a trade got out. It made it seem like Shanahan and Lynch were set on unloading him even though that wasn't their intent in considering a trade. But it probably is true that they aren't particularly high on him either, so it will be up to him to show them that he is valuable to the offense.
I've always had the feeling that McDonald tries to play under control too much and that his fear of making a mistake not only decreases the level of his play but with catching passes I think it actually leads to him dropping a lot of balls. He is a hard worker and I think he is coachable but I also think he needs to get over his "don't make a mistake" tentativeness. I think one thing has been consistent with Shanahan and Lynch - they want players with a high "go get it" quotient and I think McDonald needs to show more of that this year. I think he can do it and be a valuable part of the team, we'll see if he actually does it.
