You can put those old Alex Smith to good use, 49ers fans. Just tear off the name plate and replace it with "Patton." The team's new wide receiver, taken in the fourth round, will wear that number, at least at the beginning of the year, the team announced today. Some other number news:

5 - QB B.J. Daniels
11 - WR Quinton Patton
33 - CB Marcus Cooper
35 - S Eric Reid
38 - RB Marcus Lattimore
54 - LB Nick Moody
71 - OT Carter Bykowski
71-- DL Quinton Dial
89 - TE Vance McDonald
95 - DL Cornelius "Tank" Carradine
96 - OLB Correy Lemonier

Why No. 89 for tight end McDonald? Here's Jim Harbaugh with a good explanation.

Also, some of these numbers obviously are temporary as Dial and Bykowski have the same number. New cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha also has the same number as running back Anthony Dixon, No. 24. One more note: The fact that linebacker Moody is wearing No. 54 means that last year's No. 54, free agent Larry Grant, likely will not be back.

I don't know if Dixon will make the team but I think Lattimore is the last guy Dixon should be worrying about.

Dixons value to the team has been on STs the past 2 seasons. We didn't draft Lattimore to play on specials, I can tell you that much.
