Resign Isaac Sopoaga???

Resign Isaac Sopoaga???

I vote no and replace him with Abrayo again for $2mill a season and draft a dude. Soap is washed up

Definitely draft a guy, but hell no on Aubrayo. He's far passed washed up. I'd rather have Soap.
I voted yes... BUT.. only a 1yr contract no guarantee $$ with a high draft pick joining the team.. We need attitude all 3 downs at NT.

This isn't accurate. He got picked on all year long, gave up more touchdowns than any other defensive back in the NFL. A safety that hits hard but can't cover is pretty much useless and Whitner really struggled at times, people talk about Rogers regressing, but Whitner fell back even further, additionally, he's definitely undersized for a strong safety, that was an issue that was brought up when he was first signed and still rings true.

My ideal solution is to find a true deep safety, Goldson's more of a hybrid than anything else and has the size to play at strong safety, thereby the 49ers would need a coverage safety like Phillip Thomas or Bacarri Rambo to cover the free safety spot.

Ok. What were his passes defensed numbers? Any redemption there?

5 passes defended and he was targeted more than any other 49ers defensive back.
It becomes a dollars and sense issue, he's thirty and his production has slipped. I see some Webzoners say sign Franklin, why? Another over 30 lineman. If they have someone targeted in the draft they have enough picks to move up.
5 passes defensed in 19 games this year... Whitner was a liability in coverage all year long, especially in the playoffs.

Because NT's can take some time to develop. The deal with a guy like Franklin is that he'd be pretty cheap and wouldn't be expected to be a full-time player, you have a veteran and a rookie share snaps until the young player is able to handle the vast majority of the snaps themselves.
Id need to go back and look at tape. I'll leave this one to the boys in Santa Clara, All I know is that it isn't his job to have his name announced. Its his job to get Willis's and Bowman's called.

I really feel like the Isaac Sopoaga situation is much like the Adam Snyder situation from last year. You know what you are going to get in terms of talent, but there could be a sleeper guy that the coaches really like.

Last year, Boone replaced Snyder, and the whole board crapped their pants - including myself. I tried washing those bad boys, and the stains didn't come out.

This off-season, we could see RJF anointed the starting NT role, and a FA/draft pick to bolster the depth.

That's a perfect comparison. I was scared to see Snyder go too because after seeing how terrible Rachal was, Snyder looked pretty decent. Both Sopoaga and Snyder were basically rated as bottom 5 starters at their position in the league though. Pretty scary too, because McDonald and Justin are so good on the line you'd have to think Sopoaga gets pretty favorable matchups most of the time, yet still plays poorly.

Exactly. We need to get a traditional 3-4 NT with Justin Smith getting up there in age. 1 dominate 3-4 linemen will help and hide some weaknesses in the other linemen.
